rant
Tried "Operation 7". Nice, fast shooter with exp/money and micropay crap. So far so good, but: The amount of cheaters in this game is simply...astonishing. I mean. Ok. Its full of 15-18 year olds which running the contest of "who's got the biggest interweb-wang". OK.
But WHY IN THE NAME OF YOUR UNBORN MISSHAPEN TRANSGEN CHILDREN do you have to cheat? I dont get it. Look, if i am better than you, its cool. If you are better than me, its cool - i just find someone who i can own bad. I dont have to cheat - because my internet ***** DOES NOT GROW if i play unfair.

PS: You cant have my stuff, cause i am not leaving eve. GRRRRRRRRRRRR

but yes, cheaters in multiplayer games, especially MMOs I really don't get. Even EVE has had it's fair share of exploits but some of the games out there people can get away with virtually anything
I played Aion for a couple months not long ago, among my travels I came across someone who'd use some sort of hack to make them shoot into the sky like a rocket in a no-fly zone, and then glide off over some mountains. I posted a vid of it and just looking at the related vids you can see it's a huge issue in that game. In this case it was just really obvious
best bit - they didn't even ban him even after I reported it with a link to that vid... Go figure I don't play that game anymore
that said... IMO it's up to developers to keep their game secure. CCP does a decent job to that end...

for consoles eh?
I dunno, I remember playing halo 2 and spawning about 100ft in the air and getting sniped to hell. playing socom and getting shot at by a guy wielding a sniper rifle that had a rof like a machine gun.
probably a hack for the current games somewhere. I haven't touched my xbox much lately.

Cheating helps you to win. And if you are playing against other players this is crucial. No one wants to be on the losing part when other players are involved. So people cheat. If they can. Because then they will be the king on the top rather than the one who is lying head first in the mud.
Cheating is also a very human factor. We simply want to win no matter the price. Thats why people try to cheat in EVE too by bying isk etc. even when they know the risk of being hacked or being banned.

Cheating is only fun in singleplayer, after you completed it first.

Cheating isn't really winning. If you use a cheat, particularly the kind of cheat that makes you invincible in one way or another, you're really just handicapping yourself. By cheating you avoid the problem of improving your skills at a game. Further, when you rely on cheats to win, whatever skills you had will start to atrophy. So when a game comes out in which you can not cheat in the way you are used to cheating, you often find yourself out of your depth even on the easiest difficulty levels.
Reminds me of a friend of mine actually. Sometimes he used to complain bitterly about certain games being cheap or unfairly difficult, games I had no problems with and coincidentally couldn't be cheated or hacked enough to give him the invincible edge.
But never mind all the times you might have pulled off cool maneuvers, actions, or tactical strokes of genius on your own. Cheats rob you of that experience. With cheats you don't need to think strategically, or tactically, you don't need to worry about encountering something imposing, and so it comes to pass that you don't think about these considerations at all if you rely on the cheat. Your skills atrophy after a time.
Of course that doesn't detract the tear seekers in the least. :)

Q: why cheat in a skillbased game?
A: to make it seem like you have more skill than everyone else.

I think it's more like so they can pretend in their own imaginary world that they have more skill than everyone else. It's usually obvious to anyone but a total newb that they are cheating. I think the whole 'to **** people off' thing is just an excuse (or possibly extra bonus) when they get called on it.
I've sat back in amazement sometimes thinking 'why bother?'. But then you think back to your early/mid teens, with the mix of anxieties and insecurities coupled with all those new hormones crashing around your man/boy body. Throw in to the mix a less than average brain, and then maybe some family ****, bullying, being invisible to girls, always losing/too scared to fight, etc etc, and you end up with a saddo mentally getting off on 'imaginary winner pron'.

You cheat to win. Obviously.
Thus my guess would be that they cheat to win.... maybe I'm not understanding the question? -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

Slightly off-topic, but I remember the "olden days" when one of the (first?) Worms online came out, and the gamehost could change the weapon values..
1) Start new game 2) Set minigun bullet damage and explosion radius (!) to "Nuke" 3) ??? 4) "Lulz"
*wipes away a single tear of fond remembrance*
