We were chatting in the Blueprints channel just now, and the idea of how many times each of us has quit and rejoined EvE has come up. Everyone has left it at least once, and most people have left a couple of times. Something about the game just brings us back, though.
I've quit EvE 3 times now. First was after my first year long chunk, as Firmus Ixion started to go down in flames and my corporation, Imperium Technologies, was trying to hold it together. The second time was after coming back, finding all of my **** in nullsec in hostile territory. I dragged my Raven out of hostile space and 37 jumps through hi sec, to have it pirate ganked at my destination system (.9 hisec). Thus began another year or so of operating out of Syndicate, the ****tiest region in existence in the game. After quitting the game that time, I started up a few months later and joined up with some guys I know from a different game. In syndicate AGAIN. Played for a few months, then put my character into corp funded stasis to go for cap ships. I just started playing again in the last 2 months and have tried to shake off the market rust and find new ways to exploit the market. The going is slow.
The thing that keeps bringing me back is how open the game is. You do what you want. This makes the game less of, well, a game, and more of a hobby, a way to prove yourself in an environment that has no real life consequences for failure.
You've all quit and rejoined. Whats your story? What drags you back in each time?

I took a fairly long break (few months) after my old CEO disappeared and our corp fell apart. I wouldn't call it quitting though. I've taken a few months off on a couple of other occasions as well. Like you said, what keeps me playing eve is the fact I can actually create my own hobby and make a big deal out of it.
Incidentally, have you ever tried frigate racing? Clicky!

I just got back from a year long break. Listening to Nouvelle Rouvenor Hero (sp?) on a whim reminded me that I cannot live without EVE.
The reason I originally started quitting was because I ran out of things to do in the game; I did everything I set out to do, and none of the new features added over time grabbed my interest long-term. Also, an ever decreasing amount of free time.
I agree with the more hobby/less game thing, though from a somewhat different angle. I'm more back due to wanting to keep an eye on the development of an interesting game than because I actually want to play it. Hence my first weekend back was hours of reading dev blogs and forum threads and tinkering with the new DB dump, and very little time in-game. -

I quit for about a year during 2009. After the fall of Pure. and the crumbling of the Vale area we decided to form up a small alliance (Conviction.) with about 40 members and try to take a little pocket somewhere. We managed to hold a constellation in kalevala for about 3 months, making insane amounts of isk, until the russian blob rolled back, murdering all of our towers and taking it all back. After that happened, we decided to break for a bit. When Dominion was released, we decided to come back and see what was new. Got involved in some highsec wars shortly after, typically trolling people until they either decced us or hired out, then decimating the mercs until they gave up. Had some good fun for a while, until we decided we wanted to move back to null and start pew pewing for real again. Joined Z.E.R.G shortly after it was created, and have been heavily involved in planning the future of a decently large alliance. Have gone from nothing to ~1100 members in about a month (2nd largest non-sov alliance in game), and we're now in our element, teaching pvp to newer players and working with a team of very dedicated alliance mates. EvE is a great game, and I'm looking forward to taking my past pvp experience and bringing it to play on a larger scale, something that no other game can offer. ________

First day player,
I have taken 4-5 breaks :/ Mainly for other MMOs being released, but I have always come back to EvE.
My worst return was my first, left the game after 6 months, had an Apoc, when I returned my Corp was off killing stuff and so I flew to empire, only to find my Afterburner had been reduced to a Small version instead of the one size fits all. I lost my First Apoc trying to run 15km to a gate. Lesson learned? Always read the patch notes before logging in. 2 years in after another return I found a stash of harvester drones about 100, only to lose them all in a gate camp. It was the last big cache that I saw of them and I was amazed that in 2 years gate camps had become so common and dangerous.
My other returns have been when new content is added that I like, Tech 2 production, POS, WH exploration keeps me amused, looking in to the new planet productions as something that is going to be interesting as well

I've taken dozens of breaks from EVE, but only one of them was significant and was because I was deployed to Afghanistan at the time.
However, I have never stopped subbing EVE since I started and even when I wasn't playing I was still alarm clocking skills and or having my wife train skills for me, as was the case during my deployment.
Every once in a while a single player game or another MMO will come along that I just have to try, even though I'm still paying. Sometimes I'll play one of those games for a month or so before getting the itch to suit up in a new Hurricane and scour some 0.0 systems for targets.

This is an 06 Char and I've taken several breaks. I have only 17m SP. EVE is the best MMO I have ever played, but it takes its toll. RL catches up with you fast, and this game takes alot of research and planning.
I wonder how many SP I could have had by now, or what political position I could have been in had I played non stop since my char creation. The truth be told I don't regret taking the time off because I've needed the breaks. RL>EVE, and thats the truth, but it can be slightly regrettable.
I expect I'll quit yet again after this current war wears me down. Again.

Started Eve as a dedicated carebear in 2006. Took a few breaks on and off as kept getting bored with the game. Discovered pvp (through FW when it first came out) and that is what finally hooked me to the game.

I took an extensive break break from 2008 till this year due to RL circumstances. For about a year I completely forgot about the game. Until I went out for a few drinks with friends, a few of which play eve. We got talking about the new features in the game (EG T3, Marauders, Heavy Interdictors) and I suddenly found myself thinking about it night and day again...It was only a matter of time.
Though these days I fit my playing time round my wife and child so time is limited... Just waiting for the young un' to grow up a little and get her hooked... Then I have every excuse to be on. Yarr!

I've only taken time off from Eve once, and it was during a period of unemployment. Since then I've picked up two additional accounts that have not lapsed once.
Sure I've had periods of incredible frustration where I just don't want to log in, but I've never really "quit"

Joined release, 2003 everything was new, didn't understand the game at all. I was a huge carebear, all I really did was mine (I mined myself the mats for an Armageddon and built it with only a Thorax) and pirates were some really nasty people. Ended up getting bored and quitting sometime mid-2004 and selling my account (it was allowed at the time) for ú200 (I was in college, so really needed it ) I thought EVE was a dying game and that'd it be gone within a year.
Start of 2006 a friend who I'd introduced to EVE was still playing and got me back into the game again, letting me use his alt until I trained my own char again, as I had no desire to start absolutely from scratch again. Well I logged in and was in some 0.0 system in Delve, UHKL, and spent a lot of time ratting the BS there and avoiding BoB patrols (I did end up getting ganked by Jedite who used a covops ECM and Ishtar with ECM) Moved through several different corps, joined Stain- Alliance at some point and fought in the coalition with Huzzah Federation to kill Firmus Ixion (who BoB had decided not to help) and after months of fighting, on the day we took their final station, 9cg, BoB finally showed up and wiped the floor with us before claiming all of Querious as their own. Did piracy for a bit, got -10 only to rat it back up some months later. Kind of faded out from EVE before finally quitting again sometime in 2007.
2008 joined Naqam (first and only time I've ever had to apply for a corp), did some empire wars to get to grips with things again. Ended up heading to Molden Heath and teaming up with CR-SE and forming the Exalted alliance, living on the border of 0.0 and fighting a gueriella war against the inhabitants. Best time ever was going deep into 0.0 to IRCs home constellation and living out of giant secure cans for a week in cloaky nanohacs getting some ridiculous number of kills there. Exalted ended up dying late 2009 when the leader quit and nobody wanted to fill his shoes. Some other people left the game too, including me.
2010 after 5 months, where I'd gone off to play another MMO (Aion) until finally getting sick of it, immediately resubbed both my EVE accounts.

Edited by: Jerid Verges on 13/04/2010 14:14:13 I played for what I want to say was 3-4 months back in 2008 after Empyrean Age was released. I rage quit because I made a noob mistake and got my brand new Myrmidon blown up in under 10 seconds and was mad about loosing all those millions.
I quit for about a year and a few months. I entirely forgot about Eve during that time until I heard about Unholy Rage. Which got me back to the Eve-verse some time later.
Later I quit a second time when I got my brand new Megathron blown up in a lvl 3 because my tank broke but I didn't know about EWAR in the overview and thought lvl 3s didn't scram. But I also quit because my corp got decced and that broke the corp up, and the corp was just not working out for me anyways.
That only lasted...maybe a month. Then I got my girlfriend to start playing Eve with me. But then she started loosing interest in playing (played less and less often until not at all) so I ALMOST dropped out for a 3rd time but when to Alliance/Corp recruitment and found a nice corp and moved from Gallente to Amarr space.
-2 times almost 3.

Agreed. Being from 2007, I could have at LEAST twice as much SP than I have now if I had just stuck with it. But RL and other games get in the way. Can't regret it, just gotta keep goin =)
It does suck seeing the only good skillplan being 450 days, though.

Started in late 2007 after retiring from EverQuest 1.. After about 6 months I took a break for a few months (RL).. Came back went to providence with paxton didnt really mesh to well with them so joined my brother in IRC right as they were starting to attack RA which led to their downfall but our corp left because the CEO was going afk for awhile. After that I unsubbed for about 6 more months (went back to EQ) and came back and still here.
Eve takes a certain dedication that the average gamer may not be capable of. It also is a brutal place at times. So after 6hr ops everyday or whatever you do you cant help but burn out from time to time.

Edited by: Empress Shai on 13/04/2010 19:17:28 [Edited for how many times quit] Started playing about 4 months after release. The box said something about "you make like your virtual life more than your real one". Anyway, played a LONG time. Died too often (8 times within first week), died to Tank CEO and Lord Zapp (unsure if it is one or 2 Ps). After getting hunted by an alliance, dying to carebears, killing allot, etc, I got bored.
So my toon is dated to 2003 (this isn't my old main), and I only have 16M SP with this toon. SOOOO yeah, wish I had stayed? Dunno, but tbh I always come back. It's like an old addiction you can't ever really quit. Ah well.
Oh right, quit 3 times.

Never quit, been playing since 2006.
When I ever get totally bored, I usually make a point of going off and doing something completely different in Eve. That's stopped me ever hitting the quit button.
Examples :-
One time I became a tourist and went around looking at all the "landmarks" (eve gate is over rated)
Another time I became an cloaking ratter down in catch, effectively hostile to everyone. (pain getting in, but once I was there I was relatively undisturbed)
Another time I became an AFK cloaker in various alliance space (in hindesight should have picked a system nearer the outposts and not the same system as the players were all switched on too much to catch and kill anything)
Another time I decided to create scan spots of all gates in Syndicate (turned out to be a very useful diversion)
Another time I started grinding up massive amounts of isk to attempt a small market manipulation (never had the bottle to go for it as I started learning my massive attempt would still be small fry compared to the big boys and girls)
I've done the 0.0 alliance thing (lots of fun but I play a lot so eventually got bored of everyone waiting for the FC to come online and not do anything prior, who knows maybe there is an alliance that fits my style out there)
6 months ago I joined a brand new corp that was training up newbies and tried to help them along the way in the game (returning the favour from the first corp I was ever in helping me along)
At the moment I'm grinding isk in order to buy time cards for all my accounts. (esentially planning to play for free, trying to get a 6 month buffer on all accounts)
For the future i'll probably look at rejoining the 0.0 wars.
Thinking about it, with all the changes I made over the period perhaps I've been doing similar to the OP, but instead of quitting and coming back, I just go off on a tangent and miss the quit and rejoin stage out.
I suppose this must be my sig. I'll do something cool with it eventually. |

It's interesting to see everybody's experiences. As for me, I saw the advert on Toms Hardware, downloaded the trial, and haven't looked back. Couldn't believe I'd been playing for a year this past March. I've had times when RL got hectic and I couldn't play (two week sabbatical when my motherboard died and waiting for parts from Newegg) or when I've been focusing more on another game (Metroid Prime Trilogy and Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess when my wife got a Wii, almost finished with the first Metroid and with Zelda now) but I don't think I've gone very long without having a skill in training. Even now, our internet connection is so spotty that I can't play and it won't be fixed for a bit more than a week, but I still managed to login and queue up "Shield Management V" so I'm still making progress. I'm looking foward to fitting Shield Boost Amplifier IIs on my Maelstrom when it gets fixed. :-) I think one reason why I haven't gotten burned out is that I don't play in binges - my real life prvents me from spending loads of time in EVE, so it's definitely more the hobby category for me. I think I enjoy it more this way.

I have not unsubbed since I started in the Fall of '07. Although, admittedly, I have logged relatively few hours ingame in comparison to the sub time.
I can not play a game unless there is a chance I can loose my pants; EVE is the only MMORPG that provides this atmosphere. So as long as my cash is not strapped I will stay subbed.
Well, maybe I should rethink that strategy, stop paying my sub, use the extra cash to speed up the process to get a new comp, so I can actually participate when I do log
But I love the forums

I have not unsubscribed since 2006 - but I have played the game much more when i started. Everything was new and EVE was like one big puzzle to figure out. I tired many different things in game. But over years I started seeing same patterns repeat over and over again. Ship A set up in particular way will most likely kill ship B. Change A announced in patches will most likely affect markets in way B. Politics repeat themselves over and over again with different names involved. New generation of players comes in and well forgotten old things will be proclaimed to be new. Game for the most part has become relatively predictable.
I kept subscription going because I have made enough ISK manipulating markets to sub myself for several years and so I thought why not just train skills on my chars. If I had to pay real life ISK I would have most likely quit after first year or two just because it has gotten so predictable.
