I'm fairly new to the game, but I've gotten the hang of my Cormorant and I've been adventuring out farther into the systems with decent success. Primarily, I've been ratting in highsec systems (haven't gone past 0.6 yet), and attacking pirate nests when my scanner picks them up.
Trouble is, lately I've been running into player pirates in quick frigates, rushing in and taking my loot before I can get to it - my current optimal range is 20km, and even with my afterburner I can't get to the loot quicker than they can. Worse yet, when I open fire, they warp away before I can start cutting too deeply into their armor.
Now, I still make profits off of the bounties, and salvaging keeps some ISK in my pockets, but I'd love to bring the hammer down on some of these pirates the next time they show up. I have room enough in my loadout to afford a single Warp Disruptor I (which has the same optimal range as my turrets), but I would have to drop one of my passive shield boosters, or my multispectral. I have zero to no problems killing NPCs, so I don't think it would deplete my ratting ability very much.
Could some of the more experienced players offer some advice?
PS. Before you mention it, I've taken into account that the pirates may have been intelligent enough to equip stabilizers, but I'll chalk that up to them being more prepared than I, if it comes to pass. Can't beat everyone all the time. :/

Why do you even have ECM on your ship? That thing doesn't work 80+% of the time.

Yes, I've noticed it hasn't made much of a difference, hence part of the essence of my question.
Any answers, rather than notes?

Most of the time if they are stealing from you they are looking for a fight so they can either A.) Kill you with what they have or B.) Bring something bigger back and kill you. Don't fall for the trap. Yeah I am a pirate. What are you gonna do about it? http://www.wi-alliance.com/killboard/?a=pilot_detail&plt_id=32678 http://roadkill.igs-corp.net/?a=pilot_detail&plt_id=32678 |

Skill for Kestrel, use standard missile launchers and go find yourself a Lv 1 agent. While you are doing that train for a Caracal, it can blitz through missions very quickly.
You will make more ISK and you wont have to worry about random folks in belts. Beyond that if you want to learn more about PVP, see Linkage

Try blasters, then you're in range for your salvagers when you can start shooting.

Join a player corp. Once you are in a player corp the thief will be flagged to your entire corp and you can hopefully have one of your buddies cloaked up or in an interceptor to end their fun.

No offense, but in a Cormorant you should no expect to live thru a PvP encounter at all. Count yourself lucky you haven't already been blown out of the skies ten times over.
Even a well-armed ship would do well to think twice before opening fire on a ninja-looting intruder, as the chance of running into a trap is mucher higher than you doing any good with that pitiful ECM of yours.
If you want the bullies to stop, join a decent player corp. Then, at least, you can make a real fist. But taking on looters in a Cormorant is unheard of, be it funny. :) -- Gorgeous, delicious, deculture! |

Unfortunately the cormorant is a bit crap. I'm not sure how cormorant fits stack up to a combat frigate.
Ratting in a PVP-fit thrasher, however, could be a fun way to kill loot thieves in frigates (naturally; once you kill someone, dock for 15 minutes to wait off any aggro so they can't come back in a bigger ship and kill you).
