Devs its time to answer us laptop users. The game is unplayable at the moment for many of us who use laptops with ATI cards. Im suprised no devs have answered the questions put by these users on the thread already running. U guys must know there is a major program glitch nothing in the patch notes signals change. So time has come to answer us before many who find the game unplayable will leave. When u think how many ATI Laptop users there are its not as though we are a small group and they are justified to be unhappy and ask for answers so here is your chance.

Erm.... What problems???
I have sat on my lap currently the following laptop.
AMD 64m 3000 ATi 9600m 64Meg (Running Catalyst 4.10) 1GB RAM 60GB 7200 HDD 1024x768 TFT XP SP2 with ALL patches, XP Firwall & Norton AV 2004
This is an Advent 7039 laptop and I have no problems running 2 clients in eve.
You MUST update the display drivers because most laptop manufacturers will not support 3D on a 3D capable chipset. The attitude Advent took with me was "The drivers we have provided are the ONLY ones we will supply, if they dont work it must be the software you are running". Shame they were seriously out of date when I got it.
To obtain information on updating the mobile ATi graphics chip drivers I suggest you goto www.rage3d.com and look on the forums for the mobile section, this lists how to make the current catalyst drivers work on the mobile radion chips.

I am extremely disappointed with how EVE runs on my notebook, I get an average of 15 fps and here are my specs:
EMACHINES M5309
AthlonXP Barton (512 cache) 2600+ (2.0 GHz 266fsb) DDR 2x256 PC2100 ram (CL 2.5 hynix 266mhz) ATI 320M IGP (GPU>182 MHz, RAM>133 MHz) Toshiba 4200rpm HDD AC97 sound ALI M1535+ south chipset (with most recent driver pack: Integrated2.07) Latest bios ME07
DRIVER SETTINGS:
Anisotropic Filtering ------- Application Preference Anti-Aliasing --------------- Application Preference Texture Preference ------- Performance Mipmap Detail Level ------ High Performance Z Buffer Depth ------------ 16 V-Sync --------------------- Always off
Alpha Dither Method ----- Ordered (results in improvement over Error diffusion setting) Alternate Pixel Center --- Disabled Colorfill -------------------- Default Compressed Textures --- Enabled Hierarchical Z ------------- Enabled Pixel Shader Version ----- Default Table Fog ----------------- Enabled TCL ------------------------ Default Vertex Shade Version ---- Default W Buffer ------------------ Disabled (using W Buffer in game didnÆt result in any performance over Z Buffer) W Fog --------------------- Disabled Z Fog ---------------------- Enabled
GAME SETTINGS:
MODE ---------------------- Full screen Color depth --------------- 16 bit Resolution ---------------- 1280x800 Depth/stencil format ----- 16-bit z-buffer Depth buffer type -------- Z Buffer Multisample type --------- Disabled Present Interval ---------- Interval Immediate Interlace ------------------ OFF Widescreen --------------- OFF Dither --------------------- ON Transparency ------------- .255 (transparent windows result in lower FPS)
WINDOWS XP SETTINGS: All background programs are disabled Windows services where brought down to only 10 that are set automatic, rest disabled Windows is set to use all 512kb cache (default setting for 512kb processors in XP is 256kb) Many other windows tweaks where done for improving performance
For video drivers I use catalyst 4.9 modified for notebook use, installing 4.10 and 4.11 results in about 20% lower performance (that I really donÆt understand why) Right now IÆm impatiently waiting for release of Catalyst 4.12 if they donÆt fix my low fps problem I will cancel my account, the game is almost unplayable and with all graphics/engine glitches I get its simply not worth my 20$

Edited by: Tau Stone on 02/12/2004 23:05:43 Infineon, looks like it's your graphics card to blame. 182Mhz core GPU speed is pretty slow these days, and the speed of the RAM on it isn't much better, especially if it isn't DDR.
Just for comparison's sake, a GeForce2 MX 200 runs at 175Mhz GPU/166Mhz memory. And that's an old card.
It's a sad fact that many laptop/notebook manufacturers just slap any old graphics card in. |

Edited by: Draconis on 03/12/2004 06:25:01 I have ABSOLUTELY no issues with EVE on my Dell Ispiron XPS with EVE running at max resolution, windowed and everything maxed. Though I know my drivers aren't as up to date as the desktop card drivers. The problem with laptop users is the lack of mobility support from the ATI Software team. They've put it upon the makers of the laptop to provide updated drivers for each specific configuration.
So really it's not CCP who has to deal with us laptop users and issues with the game, it's the support issues with the makers of the laptop you purchased.

I have a laptop with a Mobility Radeon 7500...I used to have LOTS of problems with it...game used to crash when I got webbified, Amarr stations made my framerate go to almost nothing, etc...however, it was, in fact, problems with the drivers. The drivers supplied by Dell still don't have a fix. However, Omega Drivers made a fix (something to do with texturing) and after installing the newest Omega Drivers my problems went away...I get about 2 fps less then one of my friends who has a high end Radeon (9800 Ultra, or something like that) in the new Shiva client.
--------------- I guarantee that my opinions are the complete opposite of those of my corp and alliance. Get over it. |

Infineon,
The graphics chip you have shares memory with your processor, this means that it is always fighting to get to the memory and having to wait for the CPU to finish giving low FPS results.
