Doesn't make any sense for them to come to Earth for resources. There's so much more resources to exploit on other planets, even within our own solar system, that is both untapped and easy to aquire. Only thing unique to Earth is what evolved here, so possibly food, slaves or even biofuel could be a reason, yet it makes sense for their workforce to be comprised of much more efficient robots and as for food, that's anyone's guess.
So that leaves wiping us out before we become a threat, keeping us as pets/playthings or as medical experiments (FOR SCIENCE!)... or even helping us evolve beyond our savagery or whatever. There's so many possible scenarios that exist it's impossible to say which is more likely and until it happens it will always remain an unanswered question with no speculation more valid than the next.

It all comes down to the fact that as far as Aliens go - we don't frakking know. There could be any number of outcomes to contact with a civilization from across the stars - so - if you're going to make a mistake, better to err on the side of caution. After all, if you get more intelligence later you can change your mind if you are still alive. If you aren't still alive ... changing your mind later becomes somewhat difficult.

Full article is here.
If an alien Spaceship come to planet Earth today it would be darn foolish of us to not trying to communicate with them. Mainly because it would be too late to hide..
And, I would think twice about bringing a gun toward their face; a species that are advanced enough to travel large distances in space...

If i was an Alien race monitoring earth communications maybe id be a bit disturbed seeing a lot of the sci-fi stuff, what if they believe we really can construct things like the death star have starfleet and have the ability to destroy planets and look at our stuff as documentaries!
I think id stay quite as an alian race tbh

Edited by: Barakkus on 28/04/2010 17:36:36 You can rest assured we will probably never have contact with an alien life form in our lifetimes, or before our species becomes extinct. The chances of that happening are so minute that you would probably win the lottery 1000 times over before it happens.
More than likely if our communications ever were intercepted by an alien (which is unlikely since the signal would degrade long before reaching anyone) it would more than likely just sound like the static noise SETI picks up all the time.

SETI has gotten some interesting signals ... they've just not gotten any repeats. But - yes - most of what they get is of Earth Origin, which is what their software filters out. I did the SETI At Home thing when it first came out ... but then didn't make the change over to the new software ...

Yeah, I did SETI for a number of years.
Thing is our current transmissions degrade to just about nothing after 60 million light years distance, and we haven't found anything within 100 million light years so far, so it's not likely we'll ever contact anything.

I don't think it's about a Columbus/Native Americans scenario, more likely a human/ant colony one. Sure, ants might be smart and organized but do you care if you step on hundreds of them?

Humans have done the hard work of mining and refining already and I bet I could find use for the easily acquirable metals from earth's metropolises. Maybe treat humans as cattle, would be too inferior for slaves.

There are other beings out there bent on total destruction and others who are not and will simply ignore us. Earth has probably been visited by other beings, maybe not, if we have there would be only a handful of people that would actually know.
But i will tell you, if we were to be wiped out by another race of beings, we wouldn't know what hit us, it would be nothing like anyone can imagine and have seen in movies.
However there is only a handful of ways to wipe out the human race all in one go as to leave no survivors to know what hit them to retaliate.
However if we had time to retaliate the first thing to happen would be the world leaders saving there own a** and leaving the public to die as fodder, then they would fire everything we had at them in an attempt to stop them and or hope they just leave us alone...
Because if the public did know that we were on the verge of earths 1st known intergalactic war we would simply kill each other for survival and hide in a hole somewhere.
But, i have gone by the theory that if we were going to be wiped out they would use long range weapons and they would fire them from the direction of the sun or as the earth orbits the sun they would simply drop the 'bombs' in earths path.
But we will never know what will happen, the only thing we have the ability to do is plan for the worst, and hope for the best.
But, there are other beings out there, they will look like nothing we have guessed at, some will live on oxygen like we do, others water, nitrogen, and every other bloody gas on the periodic table some beings even in space itself.
If we are to learn about the past we need to explore what's left of Venus :)
So many things to do, so little time to do it in. --------------------------------------------

In an 'ideal' world, everyone get's along. There is no war and no fighting. Everyone respects eachother and has compassion for one another. We all work together for a common goal. The discovery of aliens will lead us to unite our nations and work together for the greater good of the human race.
In the 'real' world, if there is no profit to be made then why bother doing anything. There is constantly fighting going on .. there is constantly a war going on. The discovery of aliens will ultimately lead to a breakdown of all religions which will push the world into an all out self-extinction war.
As Morpheus once said - 'Welcome to the real world'
At this point it is make or break time for humanity. We can either be reborn in unity and finally set our differences aside, or we will wipe out every ounce of our existance.
Only on the brink of our self-destruction will our true paths be set before us.
The Day The Earth Stood Still anyone?
Being a cynical person and currently despising 99% of what we are, I believe we are destined to destroy ourselves. It's just a matter of time.

Please share your ideal world. It will be interesting to see what others would want the world to be like. |

I couldn't tell you, but I can tell you what it's not like, and that's your example. I don't want to "get along" with everyone and I don't see how that is possible, unless your ideal world turns humans into something else. Respecting eachother? There's alot of people who simply don't deserve respect. Working together for a common goal sounds alot like slavery (slave to a cause, slave to a master, same ****) to me and I really couldn't care less about the human race, beyond self preservation.
