Hawking's view is that the tribe\race with the bigger stick wins. He applied it to aliens that we assume (as we know no different using ourselves as a rule of thumb) would suppress and dominate a lesser species it came across.
But there are other views. Perhaps various alien factions have come to a common understanding and have a version of Star Trek's Prime Directive and allow relatively technological immature species such as own own to prosper or die by our own designs.
Or to go against that maybe superior alien species like in Babylon 5 - Vorlons, Shadows see lesser species as play things and really don't give a sh*t.
Or maybe advanced speices go transplant themselves to another plane of existance and see us as we would see birds, cows, fish, etc. Let them do their own thing and not bothered as they as so utterly primative in comparison to extra dimensional uber beings.
But in any scenario the universe is billions of years old. Its reasonable to assume that their were solar systems that had the certain mix of orbital bodies (like Jupiter as a magnet for dangerous moving asteroids) that matured to allow a species to rise say 2 billion years before now. In such a gigantic timeframe such a species will have risen to the absolute zenith of development. And from that i think they have a beady eye on the millions of planets that support life...
So i think we are being watched now and have been since one cell life started on this planet.

It should be pretty obvious that one thing we should communicate with, are numbers, mathmatics. Some say that numbers and stuff are a man-made thing. It's not. Call it one, eins, uno, whatever, 1 is still 1. No matter how you write or pronounce it.
And that is all I am going to say on that matter. Tired of these kind of threads. ________________________

Edited by: Rainus Max on 25/04/2010 19:00:11 Edited by: Rainus Max on 25/04/2010 18:58:59 Its a reasonable assumption, we know from human history that the more advanced side will always screw over the weaker side. Just because we are slowly moving towards a more peaceful existence doesn't mean every race would do the same and given the last 50 years of TV broadcasts documenting human history have been pumped into outer space most aliens will probably see us as aggressive, mass murdering idiots that like to eat the balls, one eyed trouser snake and eyeballs of every species on the planet.
First contact will probably be do us a lot of good, think of all the dirty movies! But to be honest I hope the galaxy turns out like the Stargate universe, hostile and friendly aliens and Humanity find its place in the universe. Star Trek seams too peaceful and the idea of humanity being wiped out doesnt really appeal to me.

The Americans will either: claim its an invasion and fire every different type of weapon at them or they will eat them The French will surrender to them The Germans will try and improve the efficiency of the the spaceship The Italians will have sex with them The Chinese will get the starship bpo and mass produce it cheaply The Russians will poison them The Icelanders will cover them in ash The Australians will deem them too dangerous for the non-adult population and put them behind a firewall
And the British..... Will raise a tax to deal with the increase immigration whilst the papers moan on for 60 years about the aliens being able to bring back Diana Princess of Wales

My considerable experience in these matters, in eve online , suggests that we will eventually be wtfbbq'd by an alien race who will type gb2wow in local as they strip our Crust from our planet. We will scream for mercy but they'll only be interested in killboard stats.

considering all man kind does is find new ways of killing and torturing them selves if aliens did infact pass by and have a look i wouldnt be supprised if they decided to take a front row seat and wait for us first to finish killing each other before going for the resources. ........

The interesting issue is whether humans alive today have the right to talk to aliens that will likely never hear from us or reach us etc until long after we are all dead. If there is some evil alien civilization out there, we won't pay the price for it. Future generations will.

1) It is merely a fact of LIFE that a dominant species, when encountering a weaker one, has a negative effect on the weaker species. Where the two species don't compete - then the weaker can survive but if they do - the weaker species is in trouble.
2) The answer to that is - don't be the weaker species. However, with Obama's plan to abandon the mission to the moon ... we aren't getting any stronger.
3) Now ... from Star Trek, we had the Prime Directive - which was to avoid interfering in a weaker species development - which I mostly thought was horse manure - but - #1 above was the reason for it.
4) The thing is, the more I've learned about the nature of the universe ... the less likely it is that there are other civilizations out there to threaten us. That doesn't mean there aren't any - it just means we might have more time before they show up.
5) We've not done that badly, considering that 107 years ago we first achieved powered flight but we have a very long way to go before we can go to the stars.
6) I just hope we get enough of us off this rock, before it suffers another extinction event, for humanity to survive.

Makes perfect sense to me, it's called humility, they recognized that their civilization might not be the optimal one and instead of imposing theirs on someone else they let them find their own, possible better way.

In my eyes, one of the major reasons that Columbus got away with what he did was because there was noone there to intervene.
Today, with our (relatively) basic technology, if anything along the lines of "crush the basic civilization" happens, there are tons of sympathetic people that get super-****ed at the government for doing that. So, if an alien civilization tries to take us out, then there will be a ton of backlash at them, so they probably won't try in the first place.
But this is assuming that aliens act like humans, which they probably don't. And even if they were different, they would likely be more compassionate that humans, because odds are a civilization will not get very advanced unless it cares for all of its people. __________________________

Not necessarily. But even if true, it's a lot easier to take care of "us" than care about "them." Especially when that "them" is a completely alien race who is likely far primitive to your own.

If aliens existed I doubt they would want to even come close to pitiful humans, its like imagine if we came across a planet that had cave men on, why would we even bother going near it.
I love how humans still til this day assume they are elite and everyone and everything in the world is beneath them, this is truly how we convince ourselves of gods and aliens in the first place This is so not my main |

Fair play to that man, he can talk a load of crap.
Why assume aliens are in any way similar to humans?, would want our limited resources, our banal culture or to eat us?.
Aliens don't have to be bipeds, take a physical form, feel emotion, want the same things as us or have to eat.
Considering Hawkins is meant to be an intelligent guy, he just comes across as a xenophobic idiot.

A bit to much of a generalization, he's just giving an opinion on what they may be, not what they actually are, if indeed they exist, his intelligence is beyond doubt and he's not really one for talking crap and in this case he has a point as all of history is littered with the example he chose, with that in mind his rationale is valid and certainly doesn't make him xenophobic or an idiot.
On the other hand you could be right about what they are and what they need but all he's doing is giving one line of thought, people could say your talking crap if they don't like what you're saying but it doesn't make you wrong.
