In an effort to narrow down which race i would like to focus on for small pvp warfare, I have been running 1v1 T1 frig duels. as personal preference, i have not been flying minmatar, but i have been trying most other top frigs:
Merlin Incursus Punisher
And in any setup (active/passive short/long range guns etc...) I just cant seem to give a rifter a run for its money. I am considering that my opponent is more skilled than I am, but it seems like they are either dictating range, or just outdamaging me, and by a wide margin.
Looking for any advice on fitting these frigs, or the pros/cons to each. |

Try kestrel with missile and for once you dictate the range Inject your skillbook before you leave the station. Neo didnGÇÖt learn Kung-Fu by having it sit in his usb drive.-á If it moves, shoot it. If it doesn't move, poke it with your gun and then shoot it. We are not running, we are advancing in the opposite direction |

Wow, that is almost completely the opposite result that many pilots have been finding. I'll point them here and maybe give you some pointers. ;)
(Mostly, I keep hearing how the Rifter is basically worthless now that the Merlin & Incursus are "rebalanced".)
Oh, and btw, come join RvB and have a whole lot of fun playing with the new T1 frigates. :) "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. GǪ" |

I am not sure who you are PVP'ing with, but if they are not kicking your arse in that Rifter, they are probably doing it wrong.
That or you are a PVP God.
I ran the Rifter for a long time in PVP, and now about the only two ways to really make it shine are arty range fits or close range neut fits.
Since switching to the Incursus I have not found anything other than the arty fit that has a chance. Even the neut fit can be defeated by range fitting the Incursus.
Same goes for the Merlin, which still gives me pause in solo competition - they are tough buggers.
If you are finding a differnent way to fit the Rifter to win consistantly in 1v1 battles, I woudl love to see the fit.
I miss my Rifters |

It's extremely hard to fit a kestrel with tank and tackle. To be honest the OP is probably better waiting for the revamp to hit the rest of the frigs.
Anyway, OP, you're missing the Tormentor. Might be something to try.
Regardless, the Rifter is pretty much worse than any of those three ships you listed at a direct fight in their respective optimals; the problem is that the Rifter is the fastest and will dictate range. An afterburner helps a lot; virtually every other frig will be packing a scram, and you won't be able to dictate range at all without one. The MWD will only help you get in range in the first place.
A Punisher can hit out to 6-10km with scorch or swap instantly to MF for closer things. It has more tank than a rifter with more damage and far better range projection, its only weakness being two mids (no web) and the poor tracking speed of pulse lasers. An intelligent rifter pilot will get really close and orbit you quickly to break your tracking. Proper manual piloting can alleviate this somewhat; I would also consider putting a couple tracking speed rigs on.
The Incursus will just kill a rifter flat out at point blank. It's the second fastest of the t1 frigs so that while the Rifter can gain a little bit of range on it, it's hard. An intelligent Rifter pilot will try to kite you; loading barrage and holding at around ~6-7km where it will probably win. If you can't get closer then you can always try to load Null, but as a blasterboat you definitely want to be closer.
Merlin is largely the same; generally has more buffer but less damage than the Incursus. Only problem here is that the Merlin is a brick and will not be able to keep up with a Rifter nearly as well, but it tanks far harder. A Merlin with neutrons and Null loaded actually has a chance of beating it at ~6-7+km.
One thing to check is that you haven't forgotten any support skills. In particular, I've seen way too many people neglect navigation skills. I know years old players going only 70-80% of the speed they should be because they haven't trained important support skills even to III yet. Otherwise, I'd say any of these ships are perfectly capable of killing a Rifter and so if you're not able to you might be fitting it wrong. What have you been using? |

+1 on the Tormentor - they can be quite nasty now. |

Really? Incursus over Tristain? I guess you like what you like, but the rebalances were only meant to make the lower-tier frigs more viable, not put them entirely on par with the T3s in flexibility and de facto power, and that's been my experience so far.
That said, if you're actually doing 1v1 frigate duels, why not be a smartass and bring a Griffin? Everyone will hate you, but you'll win like 99.9% of the time. |
