See the above P.S. "By the same logic, you can go with 5 stones (stone5:41p) up to 81 pounds, or 6 stones up to 163 (stone6:82p) and so on." So that 3^x breaks there (although the sum with the 5 stones is 3^4, nothing about the 6th stone or the total is about 3^x).

Edited by: Last Wolf on 28/04/2010 22:40:32 No, but I think you could do 341 pounds with 5 stones with the weights of
1 4 16 64 256
Or
3906 with 6 stones of
1 5 25 125 625 3125
edit, I'm dumb, ignore me. Oh no you don't! Incoming witty reply, ETA: 300 seconds! |

Bloody brilliant ! X stones with (X-1)^y for up to sum (y=0->X-1) of (X-1)^y ! YAAAY ! Although soon enough you'd have to use asteroids, the Earth and the Sun... and where would you get a big enough scale for that ? ...wait a second, are you sure it works ? let me check... brb... It doesn't work. Try to weigh a "2" with 5 stones of 4^x

That's way too easy. Binary. 5 bits go from 0 to 31.
We even have binary wrist watches for sale from various sources.
