Hi all.
Im not sure what's going on with my Caldari pilot. I can't see, to do well with her. I just got a Kestrel. Even if I fit it with Rockets or Missiles I can't kill this level 1 mission solo gallente ship.
I find Light missiles take too long to reload 14s and range is like 18km only. Not far enough to kite. I did equip a Ballistic Control system. If I fit rockets, I take too much damage when I'm closing in. The condor was good. But didn't do enough damage to bring down his armour (he was armour repairing).
Seems like guns are better. Didn't have any problems with my Minmitar char 2 years ago. Played like for a month+, was piloting a Cane.
Is my play-style more to a Gun/Rail pilot?
Should I switch to Minmitar and give it a try. I tried this Caldari for about 2 days. |

You can use this link, when you need to know which sort of Damage you have to deal to your opponents and which sort of damage you have to tank. (The Tanking part is important for level 3 and leve 4 missions). Damage Types

Kestrel with light missiles should be easy for level 1 missions.
To get more range for your missiles train skills "Missile Bombardment" and "Missile Projection". Base range for light missiles is around 18km, but with just level 3 in those two skills your range will be 69% better (1.30*1.30 = 1.69). Use afterburner and you should have no trouble keeping range so that enemies can't touch you.
Also, what mission you are in? Some missions are harder and especially in Epic Arc there is "Dagan" who many players have really hard time to kill. Unfortunately there is no missile destroyer (yet) so if you like missiles your next update after Kestrel would be Caracal cruiser. But that is mainly for level 2 missions, not level 1.

Hello Angel Lim Onzo,
I would recommend looking at this wiki at the support skills for missiles. As stated above those skills do help increase the damage and range of missiles. Note that some of these skills need Missile Operations to Level V so just make note of that.

Generally speaking, for a new player training missiles I'd say train everything to 3 (the ones you listed plus bombardment/projection), then go back and get everything to 4, then get launcher operation 5/guided missile precision 4, then get the actual missile type you want to use to 5 for tech 2 launchers, then start grabbing 5s in all the support skills from lowest multiplier to highest.
Sort of gives you the most usable benefit fastest.
As to the basic issue of piloting Caldari in missions rather than the specific issue of making missiles work, it sounds like the OP has more of a tanking issue than a damage issue. Perhaps focusing on shield skills or upgrading to a destroyer would make things run smoother? It's not terribly difficult to get your small guns up to a basic level, the same general "train everything relevant to 3" system gives you basic operability. You only really need to pick one or the other when you've figured out what you prefer and are specializing (4+ dots in the relevant skills) and as a caldari pilot you'll be unlocking both T2 missiles and T2 rails eventually anyhow. |

Light missiles are a bit lackluster compared to the other types. In the last frigate balancing thread the responsible dev said he was considering a 10% damage increase to make them a bit better. For rockets the kestrel as you say does not really have enough tank to use them properly. There are other more expensive ships (Caldari Navy Hookbill for example) that do very well with rockets so it's not rockets themselves that are the problem.
For cruiser and battlecruiser sized ships (like the Hurricane you mentioned) Heavy missiles are on the other hand the most popular weapon system in the game. Both for PvE and PvP.
So there are nothing wrong with caldari and missiles in general but minmatar are very good as well. You can't go wrong either choice. "Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason." |

This fit works well. Get your skills up a few points FIRST for missile range: Missile Bombardment and Missile Projection.
Missile Bombardment 2 + Missile Projection 2 = about 25 km Missile Bombardment 3 + Missile Projection 3 = about 30 km Missile Bombardment 4 + Missile Projection 4 = about 35 km
NPC frigates tend to have about a 20 km or less range.
