Eve Online is the only game I have ever seen that turns the combat equation upside down. In this game, almost everything that will decide the outcome of a battle is determined completely outside of the battle itself.
Damage types, tracking, signature radius, signature resolution, explosive velocity, optimal range, falloff, explosive radius, rate of fire, damage modifier, overheating, resistances, tank, weapons, ammo types, capacitor, speed, HP, modules, fitting.
There is a gigantic mountain of information to be digested about how combat even WORKS in Eve before one can even step into a ship, fit some guns, and expect to survive.
Most of what decides a fight in Eve is not player skill, but what ship you are flying and what you are fitting. Player skill plays a big part don't get me wrong. There is a lot of combat that needs to be monitered (Range, Cap, EHP, etc) but generally, if two qualified pilots warp into a battlefield the match is decided before the first shot is even fired. It all boils down to which ship is better suited against the other.
I know that is oversimplifying it and that it is not always true but it is true most of the time.
On the other hand. The actual combat of Eve is much, much more simplistic. It basically boils down to monitering your Cap/Ammo/EHP. Hitting f-1 thorugh f-8. Scramming webbing etc as nessisary. Orbiting. And calling your friends (Especially calling friends).
Sure there are many complex tactics out there, stealth bombers, scouts, grid-fu, warp distruption, etc etc. But most of that is stomped into the ground by numbers.
Again, simplification.
Anyways. That is what Eve is failing at imo. When you look at a successful game like Halo or, gasp, dare I say? WoW It is much easier to pick up a weapon and start playing and is more dependant on your skill to win then Eve is. And that is the big attraction there.
Don't get me wrong, I am not saying Eve sucks or that it is not a great game. Or that it is not a complex game and doesn't have its merits. But that is just my opinion and maybe Eve is not for me.
For me the biggest flaw is locking people into combat by means of warp disrupters and bubbles. Maybe if they only delayed warp by 40 seconds rather than totally stopping it, people would be more willing to take risks. Getting more involved in PVP, low sec and 0.0. At the moment if you get locked down and don't have the correct meta game fit, your dead.
