Greetings fellow capsuleers.
Let me introduce to you a sweet little tool i recently released which allows you to easily create new overview settings.
First give your preset a name. "Mining", "Fleet", "Reds only", "Missions" are good choices.
Second: Simply click the Checkboxes within each category next to the entities you want to watch out for ingame. (or de-select the ones on the right to hide members of your corp or fleet for example)
When you are done press the button to generate the overview.xml. You will be prompted to save it to your disc, to be specific, it has to be placed inside your \EVE\Overview\ Directory.
On Windows 7 and Windows Vista it is usually C:\Users\username\Documents\EVE\Overview\
After you saved the file in the right directory, you can import it ingame. Make sure to 'load' it too, otherwise you wont see any difference
Best of all it runs completely on my webserver. No need to download any potentially infected exe-files. (Though you will be prompted to download the overview.xml. duhh)

Enjoy! |

Great job with the UI, looks to be extremely intuitive. Nice touch adding the bracket icons.
I'll be giving this a trial in sprucing up my overviews later today.

Pretty cool. I like the way you grouped them although some of the categorizations you did are confusing the hell out of me since they differ from the way it's done ingame (it's not that yours doesn't make more sense, it's just that I'm used to the way EVE does it).
What's missing however are some checkboxes to check/uncheck all without the groups you set up IMO. What's also missing are all the things that are missing from the in game interface, e.g. sleeper NPCs (959-961) - unless you hid them in some group where I overlooked them.

thats already a planned feature.

Sleeper NPC are toggled by the Pirate NPC checkbox. This is (still!) exactly like it works ingame too. Basically this and the Mission NPC checkboxes (both ingame and on my script) toggles a list of 121 and 18 IDs. Thanks to you we know that 959 & 961 are sleepers, so maybe i'll create seperate checkboxes for Sleepers, Guristas, etc.
As for the rest of the Hostile NPC Category, should i group the Mission [Amarr/Min/Cald/etc] Ships into one checkbox, OR group it by faction, OR by shiptype, OR leave it as it is?

um, ingame I can right-click and remove sleepers from my overview and pirate NPC stays checked.

You can check the invGroups table of the static datadump for such values.
959, 'Deadspace Sleeper Sleepless Sentinel' 960, 'Deadspace Sleeper Awakened Sentinel' 961, 'Deadspace Sleeper Emergent Sentinel'

I'm not a mission runner but I suppose you would either want to have them all showing or none at all?

yes as long as a single one of the group of 121 (or 18 for the mission npc) is shown it will appear as checked

Thanks for making this up, it's a great tool!
Using this and saving an overview from it is the only way I've been able to add scanner probes to my overview since reinstalling EVE a few weeks ago.

Good tool, but just for your own convenience, the "%UserProfile%" not always have "Documents" folder. Ask Microsoft, why.
Also, I don't see the need to separate mission NPC. You only meet them on missions, afterall. -- Thanks CCP for cu |

Great idea :)
The way I was thinking this could go would be to have an additional 'simulator' or 'preview' screen where you could add and remove ships, structures etc. and set their standings, so you could, for example create a 'Hostile Capitals' overview and preview it in real time. Being able to do offline experiments with colortags, backgrounds and brackets settings would be the nuts.
Nice.

Because the location and name of the documents folder is not hardcoded but determined by whatever you configure via group policy/registry? Obviously the website cannot provide more than a default location.

No. Because it's name is always localized unless you changed it. Which means, that "Documents" is not the "default" place. Every localization has it's own default name for "My documents" folder. Stupid? Well... That's the Microsoft way. -- Thanks CCP for cu |

Got a suggestion... how about (up)loading existing XML settings to be used as template for further tweaking?
Also, expanding the subcategory into second column (in place of states or pushing states to the right) instead of in-column expansion. Should reduce the need for page scrolling, making overall experience better. IMO. -- Thanks CCP for cu |

this will be one of the "global settings" which are right next on my To-Do List.

For all you people with Win7/Vista %USERPROFILE%\Documents\EVE\Overview\ should be the correct path, regardless of the OS language. WinXP definately wants its paths localized though. there is actually an OS and (browser-)language detection script on the website, which was supposed to display a different helptext depending on the location of the visitor. tbh i got lazy, but on the other hand you got your hands on the tool way earlier. anyway it should be pretty clear where to save the file by now, eh?

yeah, good idea indeed. the new version has more npc grouped together and a show-all-checkbox for ships. this will hopefully reduce your mousewheel mileage

Edited by: Luminality on 24/05/2010 13:22:08 greetings! theres a new update to the tool which introduced global settings and focuses on the ship label. try the special one :] its made of awesome and win.
theres also a little change to the exporting procedure. click the radio buttons next to the export-button to specifiy which part you want to save. either both, type presets or just the global settings. for example select "type presets only" if you just want to have your new mining overview in one file. it should be pretty self-explanatory though.
dont hesitate to leave feedback, feature requests or ISKies

thank you for writing me! alas, its not possible to display the transversal speed (or any other information for that matter) right on the label. you can however try my new "special preset" and hide the type column in favour of transversal speed. methinks thats as close to uncompromising awesomeness as you can get (or just roll caldari and fire ze missiles!)

NOOOOO! Hopefully CCP sides on the side of non-exploit. Really I don't see how they couldn't, first of all the entire thing could be created manually in notepad, your program just makes it so much simpler to pick and choose. Second, so many people already have this with the scan probe feature, how could they ever change that?

I think we need a GM or Dev to weigh in on this one definitively before I start using this to add probes to all my overviews.
Can a GM or a Dev step in here and state if this is an ok thing to do. Last thing people need is action taken against their accounts for something they didnt think was an exploit.

Under "Global Settings" and then on the right under "Ship Labels" select "special preset", then just import that as your global settings.
I have the feeling that as people petition this they will receive different answers from different GM's. I really don't see how this can be classified as an exploit though since CCP cannot detect the change and you can make an overview setting in notepad if you really wanted to. Hopefully Luminality gets an official reply soon.

Nice work, thumbs up.
What I really enjoy is the potential reorganization of the ship's information, which shows up boxed rather than in a single line, and I'm very interested in having my EVE display the information like this for space-visible objects.
Should i just import the global settings if thats the case or how exactly do I get just that paarticular detail? (I'm not overly familiar with creating overview tabs so creating them from scratch isn't something I'd like to do right now...)
