Finally read this whole thread. Nice read. This incorporates the stuff in here that fetched me.
The question I have been asking myself has been: Why would any organisation dump what are obviously huge amounts of resources into the creation of a wormhole system network.
Why do I assume the wormhole network has been created?
Because the gates spawn in what is obviously a defined set of systems. Without being created the wormholes would drop anywhere and everywhere in the universe (note, beyond the known universe). There might also be the possibility that the race creating the network was advanced enough to build the suns, thus dictating the playing field.
Only three options seem plausible to me:
The creation of a controlled environment for extremely dangerous experiments.
Created for quarantine with the intent to close off from normal space.
Religious meaning, searching for divinity, passing the veil.
Any other reason to set up a network of which the higher tiers can only be reached by traversing said networks (C1 û C3 reachable from normal space with C4 û C6 only reachable from the entrance points in C1 through C3) makes little sense.
Only the experimentation or quarantine can be used to explain the defensive and tiered nature of the network unless you are thinking stairway to heaven.
The one use doesn't exclude the other. The results of experimentation in search of divinity may have been the reason to quarantine and subsequently abandon.
My theory is as follows
Set up for extremely dangerous experimentation, possibly to pass the veil. It was abandoned. Perhaps because of the unforeseen results of said experimentation, perhaps some outside influence rendering resources needed elsewhere.
The most dangerous I can think of is actually having an AI evolve of its own volition and at its own pace. Whatever you use as raw material for the AI network the resulting intelligence will be alien to its creators.
It was not abandoned without a defence, however. The sleeper drones are the defence. But they are just that, drones. They are even limited in the scope of their AI's abilities. They could be mindless automatons cut adrift or we have yet to meet the sleepers themselves.
Wormholes can be controlled, the Sansha have proven this. They were probably faster in figuring it out because they are interconnected, that or they had help. Another possibility is that the Sansha were hijacked by the sleepers and are harvesting for the sleepers to be rebuilt. Their use of the wormholes goes beyond the opportunistic use the Thukker tribe made of it. Therefore, us capsuleers are expected to be able to make the same use of them sometime in the future.
My preference is the following theory:
Wormhole network set up to experiment on AI allowed to expand on itself. Grazing the databases strewn all over wormhole space. Possibly to work out a cure for a disease requiring quarantine (desperation measure). Disinterest or calamity (ello HAL 9000), wormhole network cut off from normal space. Whatever was left in the most dangerous and unreachable of systems went to work and created the sleeper drones, those are the sleepers.
