Hi all
I know there are probably 1000s of scammers out there but I just wanted to bring one to your attention so you can possibly avoid the fate our corp recently suffered.
His name is Francoisse Rousseau (alt char: thecrate) and he joined our corp just under a month ago. We are quite new to the game so admittedly our naivety basically handed ourselves to him on a silver platter.
His character has been playing for about 3 years and we ignorantly thought it would be good to have someone on board with his exp. Last week he began asking us to give him directorship (which we didn't) and then all of a sudden we had a wardec placed on us by another corp. Fracoisse said he would pay the ransom if we made him director. After a long discussion we decided not to and he then proceeded to, under the guise of coming to haul our minerals, brought in a cruiser and destroyed two of our retrievers. He told us that he contracted the other corp to place the wardec on us and has since joined that corp. When we asked him why he went to so much trouble to attack a small mining corp, he told us it was because he is bored and is doing this to amuse himself.
So there you have it. We were silly to trust so easily but it is definitely a lesson learn't. I am writing this, not to complain and moan, but to warn others (mostly new players) of this particular character so that they might avoid this kind of situation. I hope that it will be useful to anyone who reads this.

How's that scamming? Did he take anything? You did the smart thing and not grant him director role.
You're describing griefing, unfortunately there's not a whole lot you can do to prevent griefers from joining your corp...

Well he was our primary hauler and we opened a corp division to put our refined goods in to allow him to take them to Jita. When this all went down he made off with about 30mil (I think) worth of refined ice goods. So yeah, he did manage to steal from us.
But all in all, I think our damage control was pretty good as it could have been far worse had we given in to his request of promotion.
I would love to hear any advice you have to avoid griefers.

Your scammer friend seems pretty fail.. I've accidentally scammed people fore more than 30m (as in, I didn't mean to scam them, just accidentally overcharged them) so spending more than a few mins worth of work for that massive amount of isk seems like he could have been making more isk legitimately...
Preventing greifers form getting in corp is hard. Pretty much the only way is to never recruit anyone ever again. Obviously this has some down sides...

People can be quick to laugh and say it's your own dumb fault for giving him access in the first place. However, unfortunately for any corp to work there are degrees of trust which are needed.
The key really is getting to know people and not giving them any access to key resources until they have started to fit in and have actually put in some game hours towards corp activities. This goes beyond simply having placed an alt in your corp for a few weeks/months before asking for hanger access, offering to haul some things or access to pos labs.
Certainly never hand over directorship to someone as clearly bad as this joker was.

OP sounds remarkably levelheaded making the scammer's attempt even more loltastic, thing is ofcourse that when he asked for roles the first time that should have resulted in an immediate kick but I'm sure you'll implement such a rule from now on :)

I too hate scammers so I thought I would help the OP. After careful investigation I can confirm the scammer in question is probably French and almost certainly likes cheese.

Since joining our corp, Francoisse Rousseau has stolen our wallet of 20 mil and our emergency Moa stash. I place the blame for this squarely on Jon Clarke, who knew about her thievery and decided to withhold this information out of spite until it was too late.

20 million and some moa's big deal, I wipe my butt with 20 mil isk. You could of lost 700 billion like Eve bank did when Ridic stole there bankroll and corp hangers.

Is that just one guy with a lot of accounts or did like, 10 trolls fail as hard as the corp scammer to get any kind of rage? 
Anywho, sucks being scammed, the amount of isk that is 'a lot' to a new corp and an old corp are certainly different. Some people either forget that or just want to feel supra hardcore on the internets. |

All I read there was 10 guys, hardcore, and tears on the internet. I've seen a few videos like that, and they are among the most artistic things I have ever seen. Why do you hate art?

Funny thing is, we're not or weren't even all that upset about it. I mean sure, it was a shock and disappointment at the time but we're quite over it now. It is all just a game after all. :)
Mohammed, if Francoisse did indeed steal from your corp, why then, please tell me is he still in it along with his alt? I wonder if your CEO ever thought that what he did to us, he can do to you guys as well? But anyway, I'm sure you're all on top of things so why listen to a noob like me? :) I hope your corp enjoys wasting 2mil ISK a week on nothing.

OP, what you describe is neither 'scamming' nor is it 'griefing'. He (or She) was simply playing the game the way he wanted to play it. His bumbled attempt at directorship notwithstanding. He seemed to be rather crude and impatient. If he'd had a little more skill or patience, you probably would be out a lot more than a couple of moas and 20mil isk.
Congrats to you for not granting him director at his request.
Look up Karttoon for an example of what somebody can really do to screw up a corporation/alliance. Next to that, your so-called 'scammer' is nothing.

It's called racketeering. Bunch of corps do it all over EVE universe; typical target are industry corporations, pref newbie so you guys have no alts you can go play with as older dudes usually do.
Few people read this forum so my advice is to watch what new corporations he joins and simply eve-mail their CEOs with warning (i.e. get information directly to those who need it). Also this will drive him nuts ;)
