That would level the playing field by a factor of huge and set the bar low enough for all, including new players.
While I agree completely, I doubt that the folks who are prospective customers are as aware of this issue.
Incarna would probably fish in the most folks...many of whom will leave when they get a taste of the larger game outside the inner game of Incarna, but some of those folks will find the complexity to their tastes and hang on.
This game is way too complex for the shooter crowd though, so while DUST may be a good shooter, I doubt it's going to fish in folks to play EvE Online.
This depends entirely on how Incarna and walking in stations is handled. They could make it so that it is merely an extension of the ship based game, or, they could actually have it a game in and of itself that runs along side of the space based game. There could be industries that can only be run from stations, black market issues to deal with etc.
If its dealt with correctly, CCP could attract a whole slew of players who want to run shops, bars etc and nothing else. But, then you will get people complaining that too many are hanging around in stations constantly...its...going to require some very fine balancing, but, yes...Incarna is the best bet to attract new players...and I think it will attract thousands to the game.

Dressing up, aka Incarna.
I introduced a friend to Eve a couple of weeks ago, she spent nearly 2 hours getting her avatar looking just right. She was instantly board of fitting out a space ship, and gave up after the second tutorial mission. So I've now got another trader alt training up.
I sure she would still be playing if she could design avatar costumes to the extent we can fit out ships or run production or invention.
Put different shops in different stations in different regions, have missions to them to find stuff. Make dresses like ships and modules like accessories and she would be hooked. She will drag me 200 miles to a shop to get specific handbag or belt. I don't mind it has it's benefits
Thinking about it I better keep quite about Incarna, she will probably want that trader back to set up a boutique.

Originally by: Taxesarebad If dust doesnt fail it will bring alot of players to eve. first of all eve is on the unknown side of games. when dust comes out players there will want to see their impact from the eve perspective. some, not all will enjoy eve and stay others will not enjoy it and leave. my guess ( assuming dust is a great success) 3million copies of dust 514 are sold. 1 million of those people try EvE online because they want to see what its about. 300,000 of those people quit the first or 2nd day- to complicated for them to learn 200,000 more quit when trial runs out another 200,000 quit after the first month, weather to payment issues, not being self sufficient or losing a ship 200,000 people join eve and play for more than 2 months. of that about 20,000 become great successes in the game
What happens with the last 100000?

A lot of people aren't going to like this answer but...
More and better pve content. Incarna will attract new players but they will not stay when they tire of missions/wormholes/mining/sites/whatever (and they will). IMO 'sandbox' and 'pvp game' are synonymous with 'lazy' and 'cheap.'

Edited by: Cathy Drall on 13/05/2010 19:52:00 A few very good points. I'm not sure what will attract more people - DUST or incarna. The others are just minor.
Imho EVE lacks social interaction and I think incarna will be great for that. It's hard to identify with your 2D character now - as said by Lord FunkyMunky in post 6. Other things than PvP or PvE battles are good and broaden the game's scope. Yes we have mining and manufacturing now but I'm sure Incarna will bring a lot more.
With the addition of planets and planetary outposts EVE could become a living, breathing multifaceted more realistic world, not just a huge battlefield in dark and cold space. If we get huge trade hubs on planets where things actually happen we could get Star Wars like outposts which would only be good for the immersion. And as Wyke Mossari posted, it will also attract more kinds of people - I don't even bother to show the game to my friends now.
Btw I know other games have it as well but if we could paint our ships or at least attach logos to it to identify our corp or alliance so people could see it when docked in stations - what's so bad about that? To be able to have some individuality is what a lot of people really appreciate.
So ehm .. I vote for Incarna

if lag was somehow removed as by magic, all the old eve players would come back, drag new members and eve would have millions of subs as it would be truly epic is lag was gone!

While I'm not a big fan of "Metagaming" in RPG's. I fail to see how playing more than one character fits under the definition of "Metagaming"? As long as each character was properly played "In Character", then how is that metagaming? I always though of the definition of metagaming as doing things that our outside the knowledge that your character would have.
If I am playing one character who is sitting in a recon ship on one side of the gate, and it in communication via a secure subspace radio channel to my other character on the other side of the gate to inform him of the tactical situation. How in any shape or form is either character doing something outside of their knowledge? How is this metagaming?
In my humble opinion it is not metagaming, it is just playing more that one character.
Metagaming would be if your character somehow knew in advance of the challenges of a particular mission because the player researched it ahead of time, something the character would not be able to do. However, that is just as easily done with one character.
Anyway just some thoughts. I guess I'm just a stictler for definitions :-)

Excuse me! I resent that remark! I have been a FPS kinda guy since back in the day with Unreal / Unreal Tourney / Quake etc... and EVE is the only mmo that has grabbed my attention. *(Its also arguably the most in depth and complex mmo too)

The UI needs drastic improvements. The way it is you can hardly play with 1024x768. I have 1980x1060 and even I still sometimes run out of place to put windows!
Aside from that, Incarna. -----

It's interesting that they're hiring hoards of game/graphics designers but nobody for audio. What a pity - I can only imagine what WoD will be like (silent is my first guess).
On topic, I think Incarna will help girlfriends of players to stay interested in the game if they get to play dressup in safety as they can in WoW. Raging stereotypes? Indeed.
