Anybody think the current standard of games being released now and over the past year is generally garbage?
I'm currently down to playing Rome total war and it's expansion packs, the new stalker game, and eve. ------

Its ironic that now computers are exponentially more powerful than 8-bit and 16-bit games computers in the 1980's and early 1990's the variety of games is now far more narrow.
Its a mixed bag. Battlefield Bad Company 2 is really good. Left 4 Dead 2 is great. But Supreme Commander 2 was no heir to Supreme Commander Forged Alliance.

Bad Company had more potential, the maps are far too small and don't feel at all like any of the older BF games. They were a lot more open, and now they just try to funnel you into choke points. Got bored of that game quicker than mw2.
Stalker is good though, I'm enjoying it.
Civ5 might be good, but it's not out till September :/ ------

Its gotten to the point where I don't even pay attention to new releases these days. I think the last game I thoroughly enjoyed was Prototype then that got old quite fast after I beat it. I miss games with replay value, lol. Yeah I am a pirate. I am loving Heroes of Newerth, just released last night after beta.
It's made by the people that made DOTA for WarCraft3, using the core WarCraft3 engine to make this game. It's quite balanced and the initial learning curve is about as steep as eve if you never played DOTA, with no easy mode. Imagine starting EVE in 0.0 space, with every time you die, the other teams becomes that much stronger over your team... yeah...

Companies seem to put more resources into graphics and other hokus-pokus than game design and quality assurance. So you end up with the same crap in new wrapping usable after three patches post-release. --------

I don't think it's so much that the games are poor it's just that there is very little left in terms of originality to create, the next big step will be how we play and interact with games, the likes of the Nintendo Wii are the beginning of that long road imho.
Not the sole reason but one of them I reckon, plus if your looking for something new to play Try Europa Universalis III plus the 3 expansions, you can get EU III, with the first 2 expansions from Amazon for ú10, In Nomine and Napoleons Ambition, the 3rd will cost you ú14 from most digital download sites, only use steam if you buy the whole lot on steam, it seems you cant mix and match with steam. EU III has 10x the strategic depth of the total war series but no real time 3D battles but it's not as bad as it sounds.
PS You're a smelly mackem, and so's Curso.

The only new game I've played recently that I would actually call "good" is Mass Effect 2. Epic story, well written, shiny graphics and soundtrack, sympathetic characters, and plenty of replay value. ____________________

This is pretty much the problem. MW2, Halo 1/2/3, etc. are the exact same mechanics just in different costumes. What burns my nuggets is that they port the console dumbed-down-games into PC where there is more flexibility in terms of control. Feels like I'm riding the shortbus sometimes.

Braid is a recent game that was full of awesome. And I just downloaded Machinarium from Steam, another indie game that seems promising. Torchlight is good mindless fun too. The indie game scene is coming up with some pretty interesting things, whereas the mainstream game companies are turning into their Hollywood counterparts, filled with bloated big-budget releases that all too often prove to be tasteless and uninspiring.

Yea I'm in the same boat, I dont follow new releases at all any more, they all seem to be very generic, at the moment all the games installed on my PC are old ones, silent storm, silent storm sentinels, x3 terran conflict, sid meier's pirates, silent hunter III, civilisation 4, UFO Aftershock, dawn of war, freelancer, nexus the jupiter incident and sins of a solar empire

I will through my theory out there but it is in relation to a general decline in the quality of the gaming experience of the past decade or so. Then again, I just may be a jaded bastich
Companies have realized that gaming is the future of entertainment and they are shoveling out crap since they know most products the general product end up accepting/affording are, at best, mediocre compared to the cream at the top.
In the past, you did not have the benefit of 'awesome' graphics, real musical artists banging the door down for exposure, and big business getting into the mix to pad your product; so the gaming industry had to rely on good story telling and sound mechanics to keep the minority of gamers, that existed at the time, entertained.

There is no shortage of completely amazing games, and I reject the notion that the quality of gaming/games/etc is declining. What is increasing, however, is the money stream and the sheer number of completely crappy games that people are willing to fork out for.
It turns out that the masses love really ****ty games. Just look at the biggest franchises making the most money.
But if you push this aside, and start doing some digging, you'll find there is some really wonderful games to be enjoyed.
Oh, and btw - what is easily shaping up to be game of the year, in my mind, comes out next week (on consoles anyway) - "Red Dead Redemption" If in doubt, watch the videos concerning the open world multiplayer, and "life in the west" or whatever on their website.

Dragon age where OK, but I guess thats about it too. Wanted to buy Settlers 7 but decided against it. Their new copy protection being a major reason for it. Besides, from what I hear it stinks too, so I guess im better off anyway.
My problem with most of the games coming today is: they are all action games! Even games the gamecreators calls Adventure games or Role playing games are nothing but pimped up action games with a character creatioin tool or a handfull of skills only. Where are the games with indepth story and somewhat sandboxy style? No, waiting for new good games seems to be futile indeed..

Did you try the Third Age mod for MTW2? I'm not a huge Tolkien fan but that mod alone is worth to get MTW2/Kingdoms.
Also if you are into Civilization type games you should try the Fall From Heaven mod for Civ IV+expansions.

What we lack these days are games that would take utter days to complete, most games now can be completed within 3 hours of solid playing. Most EA games are done in 1-3 hours.
We need game company's to spend a good 2-3 years on a game to fully perfect its awesome-ness not like EA that push out a game within a year on their rush and bodge it program. But EVE with it being a sandbox you can never complete, there is always something new to do, every fight is different, and reactions from the players make you laugh in different ways.
Now. Lets hit the consoles.
Nintendo DS - some awesome games to begin with, mario kart, super mario bros to name two, now its stuck with peppa pig, how to raise dogs, cats and oh look a book. and to keep the DS alive they brought out a new one that does exactly the same as the old, just with a camera, and now the XL, with a huge 90% increase in screen size, and what did they advertise on TV to promote this, a book! - YES, you can reed more words on the screen from a book on this.
Nintendo WII - Started off with the oh so awesome Zelda Twilight Princess (by far thee best game that EVER came out for the WII) , Red Steel, WII sports and the WII fitt board thing, Olimpics and super mario bros again (hmm) - now were stuck with pepper pig and all sorts of other 3 year old games that are quite frankly s**t. Except Monster Hunter, that one isnt bad.
Xbox (all of them) - GTA, halo, bayonetta etc, awesome, and soon dust 541, allot of awesome games but with the odd new release of a new shade of grass for the new football games which i have never touched in my life, why people spend 50 quid for a game that's exactly the same as what it was last month/year just for a new shade of grass (i know that's not all there was, but you understand what i mean).
PS2 - some awesome games on there, but then that died.
PS3 - some absolutely s**t games and quite frankly the PS3 has just turned into a football consol with a blu-ray player. - There is not one game that has come out of the PS3 that has caught my eye.
PSP - HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAaaaahhhhhhh - you can watch films on it i think?
rant is over ^^
PC ftw. --------------------------------------------

sort of agree with your premise, op. seems like most games like these are ****ted up commercialized shovelware. where did games like elite go? there are no recent space sims besides X3 (which is ok, i own it) seems like everything original died when megacorps got into the game industry. hopefully it gets better, hopes not high here though, i'll stick with old stuff if i have to. nub> you cant mine so you kill. |

The future of gaming is in indies. Portal, Braid, Trine, World of Goo, Machinarium, Dwarf Fortress. All infinitely better than most recent triple A titles. On top of that Halo, Quake, DotA, Starcraft 1 and Counter-strike 1.6 make up a larger part of the multiplayer gaming market than every other non-mmo multiplayer game combined.
This graphics craze will collapse at some point, and everyone will come crawling back to the good old days of games made by two guys in a basement.

I agree, excellent game. Also works perfectly on all platforms (Linux, Mac and Windows) which is a huge plus.
The community are real bastards though. They will kick you in the teeth every chance they get. So Im sure Eve players will love it. =)

I agree. I spent 2 months of a 7 month deployment playing that game over the myriad of 360 and PS3 games.

Problem with higher end games now adays is the fact they're getting budgets to match movies to just to make them look nice and sound nice. Dont put enough effort into either and you are gonig to lose sales because they will indeed look like a cruddy game for what is called for. Gameplay development takes a back seat to this because oftenly gameplay effects how things should look and sound and considering look and sound takes the longest they oftenly are reluctant to change that. Also time constraints of releasing a game where hopefully the technology will be there to play it when it comes out if you are aiming very high.
None the less i agree alot of pc games are not of my interest lately. Pre-order your Sisters of ≡v≡ Exploration ship today, Updated 24FEB10

Quote: Anybody think the current standard of games being released now and over the past year is generally garbage?
Yes, totally.
A lot of the new games just have way way too many people involved in the development. Which leads to a water downed rehashed feel. Pretty much every game I've seen lately, the graphics aside, is a really bad remake of some other game.
I've seen a ton of games lately that are written in very "high level" programming languages which almost without exception is total garbage. I felt totally ripped off the couple times I've seen this.
Take for instance Chris sawyer who made the original Roller coaster tycoon 1 and 2. He wrote most of those games solo, in machine language. Whether you like them or not you have to appreciate the programming and "feel" of the games. They have a rock solid polished quality to them. Of course they took forever to create because almost all the code is machine language.
If these big software game people were smart. They would hire Chris sawyer or someone who really knows how to make professional games. Like the guy who made the original fallout. Give them total dictatorial powers and the ability to pick and choose their programmers, graphics designers, etc. Give them a nice office area to work in and let them do whatever they want. Then we would see some good games possibly.

AAA games? yeah that's a bit stale nowadays.
....thing is, you can find some awesome pearls and jewels on the indy scene, and best of all, for the price of one AAA games, you can buy like a crapload of them. Games like Audiosurf, Shatter, Osmos to name a few.
even some games that you never heard about can be quite awesome. yesterday I bought King's Bounty: Armoured Princess, and it's quite good, for the price that was.
so yes, instead going for the main players, do try to look out for smaller production/distro companies (1C and JoWooD for example). you will be quite surprised. ---
