I've been playing League of Legends. I find it a bit more noob friendly than HoN for non-DotA veterans (like me).
Oh and it's free.

Its the same as in music/literature there is only a give amount of notes themes storylines that you can combine and at some point bringing something new is nearly impossible.
Groundbreaking games like ie fallout 1+2 dwelled in the heads of of some of the developers for years, this is something that only happens from time to time and will hardly work with nowadays game machineries.
Just look at shooters halflife, it was in terms of gameplay and graphic nothing special but combined a good story with jump and run elements to the shooter genre if you do that today you can only improve graphics sounds etc... Then innovations are nowadays spread out at come in bit for bit with new titelssince there are so many of them.
There are good games out there but be honest even in the times of 640x480 good games where not all that common if i look at what i had bought over the time there are **** games from every year.
You also cant forget that back then there were no references for what is a good game making sfx and graphics didnt take that much to make compared to nowadays and of course polishing a game in the 90ies didnt take that long then today too so if the publisher gave you 5 more days to finish a game well that mostly was enough today 5 days or nothing.
Its just that atm every now and then some realy good games come out with replay value but at the same time shows us how bad other games are. Just look at dragonage à its baldurs gate 5.0 what has this game (besides graphics and sound and pr work and dlc) that bg2 nvm1+2 didnt have?
If baldurs gate and neverwinternights (and icewinddale to some degree) never happend dragon age wouldnt be a rather good game with excellent pr but a groundbreaking genre defining masterpiece.
Same goes for many titles gamers have seen lots of stuff and to surprise us or entertain us developers have to try realy hard but sometimes it happens:
Stalker series Total war series (without empires) Vampires the masquerade Mass effect 1 Even tho i dont have them i l4d2 and borderlands seem to be pretty good games with replayvalue
The point is when i bought baldurs gate or fallout or starcraft or halflife i enjoyed them they were and are good games but if i got at some point tired of them i had no alternative it was that or nothing
If i get tired of .. masseffect 2 i have a good selection of other shooters with a hint of character development andscifi setting (even me1).
Back then you couldnt say game xy is better seen this there and there nothing new à. Now you can and we see new games with different
My neighbor bought a ps3 he never played shooters before. He thinks mw2 is a godsend and so would all of us think if we didnt know any other shooters. On the other hand he got civ for it too he thinks its a solid game but then he already knows other civ games.

I have just finished the single player in COD MW2. A lot of people have complained that it is too short. I am not awesome on fps's so it took me a while to do. It was like playing a film. Very immersive and visceral.

Edited by: NeoShocker on 16/05/2010 14:59:58 Edited by: NeoShocker on 16/05/2010 14:57:04 No good games? Where you been doood? The following games I recommend are:
Mass Effect I and II (can't wait for ME III!) Company of Heroes (sure its released awhile ago, but still awesome, friends to play with is a big plus!) StarCraft II (release in two months, pre-order now and you get into beta) Bad Company II (awesome when playing with friends) League of Legends (dota-like game and play with friends only) And finally ... Eve-Online. :)
Pretty much all I play nowadays. :) Any other games are not worth mentioning after 2-3+ weeks of gameplay. Must mention one game though, Batman: Arkham Asylum. Now that's a good game even tho it last less than 2 weeks of casual play. The titles I mentioned however ... I still play for months/years. :) ----------------------------------- Peace through power! |

All titles are released with DLC for you to buy and there's no incentive for developers to include them in the original game. This coupled with increasing cloud data on what you 'have' to enhance your game is a problem for people such as myself who prefer to have the original media, have the media be a complete and decent game, and who, like myself, enjoy playing the game as I would like to play it.
Consider for a moment Starisege Tribes, and then compare it to let us say, a Battlefield game. The Battlefield game will have an expansion or DLC every other month with locked / closed servers and being hard to mod while Starsiege Tribes was open and allowed users to play as they like.
With most developers going console and closed platforms / Steam it's a bad time for gaming.

There may some life left in some of the strategy classics. The consoles can't have it all their own way.
Some future games that could be promising...
- Master of Magic > Elemental: War of Magic (Stardock, creators of Galactic Civilizations).
- Jagged Alliance Series > Jagged Alliance 3 (IP bought in March 2010 by BitComposer Games). It might actually make it this time.
- Civilization Series > Civilization V, even though it is tied to Steam and is jumping on the bandwagon of DLC on it's release.

I've played some good games in the last year. Battlefield Bad Company 2 and MAG, for instance. The recent Halo: Reach beta was fun. I'm playing BioShock 2 now... storywise (so far) I much prefer the original, but I love Trap Rivets.

If any of you like UFO: Enemy Unknown and the turn based squad games like it you might want to try silent storm and its expansion silent storm sentinels, its a turn based commando's style game set in world war II where you're commanding a special operations unit tasked with combating a renegade army made up of combined germans/british/american/russian who are trying to take over the world by using high tech 'panzerklein' power armour and developing ray guns, its like world war II mixed with laser guns and sci-fi power armour
Although where you would get a copy of silent storm now I've no idea, there's no torrents of it about that I can find and its not for sale on any of the main distributors like steam and impulse
