its in the name... i'm trying to figure out which carrier to go for, i have equal skills in Gallenete and caldari, i like the Chimera a lot more looks wise, but the Thanatos seems like more of a drone boat,(compared to the Chimera which is more of a shield tank) and was wondering, overall which one would be better, i plan on being a drone boat(obviously) and i want to be able to tank a little bit(not have to rely on supports to stay alive),
Thanks

/me watches as dozens of pirates run to their locator agents to find Sgt lupus.
It sounds like you think that a carrier is a solo ship. It isn't. Get the one that works best in your fleet of friends. If your friends armor tank, you probably want the Thanatos. Personally, I like my Thanatos, but I prefer my Archon. --- This doesn't even seem to be a regular case of rats fleeing the sinking ship. If you are planning on using it as a solo ship, go for the strategic cruiser. Or you could just get an Ishtar and be better off and have more ISK left over. --- This doesn't even seem to be a regular case of rats fleeing the sinking ship. carriers are gang ships that provide support in both firepower and logistics. don't try to solo lvl5's with one. you'll end up in tears. ---

thanatos, the fighter damage bonus still works for assigned fighters. also if you hot drop most time you'll be supporting armor tankers. go for chimera if you ever plan on switching to mothership, 4000dps passive regen is no joke. the only thing that beats it is aeon 57million ehp. nyx are like 20% more expensive and 50% less survivability.

You raise an interesting point here. While the Chimera can field a strong shield tank, the ship itself being 'more of a shield tank', it can in fact also double as a 'drone boat' with some success. My advice to you would be to take the aspects from the thanatos that you like and put them onto the Chimera.
I'm sure you have already worked out a shield tank, the Chimera being more of a shield tank as opposed to a drone boat, so why not take the 'drone boat' aspect of the thanatos and try applying it to the Chimera in EFT?
I have had some success fitting drones to the Chimera, it has enough bay for multiple flights of light scout and medium combat drone along with room for handy target painter and tracking disruption drones. Although it must be said that I do feel funny putting these 'drones' onto what is clearly a shield tanker.
In conclusion you are a gorgeous free spirit and should be allowed to fit drones to anything you like, even if it means putting them on a :gasp: shield tanker such as the Chimera.

Drone tank AND shield tank? Xenon, l2fit ships. One or the other. Always. If you want to shield tank, you -cannot- make use of your drone bay, or it completely invalidates the fit.

The Thanatos being an armour tanking ship lends itself better to fleet use as many alliances depend more heavily on armour caps and subcaps in situations where carriers are used, that's not to say a Chimera is useless as just as many fleets will have a mix of armour and shield ships and the cap transfer bonus is great and can still use capitol armour reps without the range bonus plus it can be sort of armour tanked if really required.
However the Thanatos can also use capitol remote shield reps as effectively as the Chimera when in mixed fleets. For me the choice is a simple one, if I had to choose between the Chimera or the Thanatos I would definitely take the Thanny*.
*Especially when you consider that you get a maxed skill Domi to use for general subcap stuff to

Don't forget that a Thanny can actually be shield tanked quite easily if you decide to go with a shield tanked fleet.

This, which for me is one of the biggest reasons the Thanatos isn ot as good as the Archon.
That said, I fly a thanny and love it

Out of the two, Thanatos.
More damage, can shield and armor tank, can do remote shield and armor tanking and when in a group of RRing carriers, your armor tank will last longer as most people fly remote armor carriers.

Edited by: MIDI ION on 26/05/2010 14:49:14 according to my best "realistic" EFT fits for both ships... The Chimera "can be fit" to out tank the Thanatos easily by about 300%... however the thanatos does get bonus to drone damage however max damage @ all lvl 5 skills 1875 DPS vs the chimera 1500 because no damage bonus... this is assuming you have both fit with 5 drone ctrl units to be able to fly 15 drones at once on both ships.
the numbers i ran real quick came up to... Chimera 4856 DPS tank thanatos 2765 dps tank so really the chimera is getting about 1100 more dps tank at the cost of 375 dps damage done.... again this assumes all lvl 5 skills and no active triage modules. both ships cap stable the gallent has 1 free mid slot anything less than that and you lose cap stability...
with -1 drone ctrl unit and replace with active triage module the chimera tank goes up to 10,753(stable) / 19,082 (unstable) lasts 2m19s the thanatos tank goes up to 6778 (stable( / 11,061 (unstable) Lasts 5m41s unless you use the free mid for another cap recharger then its 7m46s
personally I would go with the chimera.

All carriers are drone boats (so to speak) and they all can hold more drones than you can launch , so thats not a great reason to pick one over the other .
DPS and Tank ARE good reasons . And of course, what you will have fun owning is the best reason.
Something to concider if you ever move up is the mothership. Nyx is my favorite looking ship in the game.
I fly a Chimera , but if I were to purchase a MOM I'd take the time to train for the Nyx.

Make sure if you're using a Chimera to turn off the capital shield boosters before you jump through a stargate or the gate won't allow you to jump. ___________
