Hi all,
I just came back to eve after being gone for about five years. I noticed that the sound doesn't really work anymore for me. If I group up with one or two people, or have a ship with a lot of guns, eventually all the turret sounds disappear and the jukebox stops playing and then the only thing that makes any noise in the game is the targeting noise and the computer voice. I asked my friends I was playing with, and they said it happens to all of them too, and that it's been that way since Apocrypha. Is sound really broken for everyone? Or are there some people out there who can still hear the pew pew? For me, it seems ok if i'm playing solo in a frigate, but once i'm in a bigger ship or with other people the sound just dies. Are there people out there who can hear the sound while in a group with a lot of guns?

Played since 2004, never used sound from after the first month. Sound has always been buggy on Eve. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________

I'd post there, but from what I am seeing so far, sound is broken for everyone so there's really no point.

Do most people just turn the sound off? That seems like a crappy "fix".

While this might be true, the sound has been super suckage since Apocrypha.

Wow... so, so far in this and other posts I've only seen people who have broken sound, and people who play with the sound turned off. Is it seriously broken for everyone? That seems like it should have bee a Pri-0 bug that should have been hotfixed right after Apocrypha to roll back whatever broke it. Has CCP seriously just let sound sit there completely broken for everyone for over a year? That's pretty sad. Has there been any dev response admitting that they know it's broken or talk of trying to fix it?
...seriously, is it actually broken for everyone?

The sound isn't broken for everyone, but it is full of little bugs even at best of times. So not broken for me, but it isn't good either.

The "positional" and distance audio is what seems to be causing the most problems. Should just be removed for now TBH till they can actually make it work all the time.

I usually play zoomed out dozens of kilometers from my ship so I don't hear gunfire or gatefire very often - nor do I play with the jukebox thing. But when I do zoom in on the guns, it usually plays the gunfire sounds more or less correctly. Usually. (Sometimes a Sansha BS will be ridiculously loud no matter how far out I zoom)
For the most part though, sound seems to work great!
But I have noticed that when I finally zoom in on a gate after being there a while (possibly having had people go through it), the gatefire sound will play as if its been sitting there queued up, waiting for me to get close enough to hear it go off. And if I zoom back out before it finishes the whole sound, then zoom in again, it'll play again. This is repeatable until you let the entire gatefire sound play out.
Other than that, yeah, sound is 100% working great :/
Oh, except if you target an asteroid in space when they aren't in your overview, then the "pewpewpew" targeting sound doesn't play, nor does the flashy box graphic happen on screen. But I think that one's more of an overview or targetting bug than a sound glitch.
So yeah, sound is working great! -ish
(Well, at least the shield/armor/hull breach sounds play without fail.) |

When you zoom out, the sound of your turrets SHOULD get louder. And when you zoom in, you SHOULD be deffened by the roar of enemy guns 100k away! Working as intended.

As far as I am aware EVE`s "Sound" is messed up for everyone. I have a x-fi 24bit really nice soundcard which I use for lots of music production and manipulation which it can handle fine (i.e Reason / Cubase etc..) however eves "Sound" is buggy as hell. I do believe its a problem with their sound engine.
Its a sad but TRUE fact that a hell of a lot of people play eve with no sound. How that is not a priority for the devs is beyond me :S

Edited by: Aurum Bellator on 24/05/2010 21:58:24 If you do a forum search in the "Issues, etc." forum, you will find several posts on the topic. I personally have a few sound problems, not a severe as some, but in particular I can't hear the crackling sound of the warp drive (which is useful for gauging when you are coming out of warp).
I recommend to EVERYONE who has sound issues, go through the steps of actually creating a bug report / petition about it. I've done so, and been taken through about 10 steps by a GM which included updating all drivers, etc. the result was - no improvement. Hopefully if enough people do this, they will realize that yes, really, sound is broken and needs to be fixed.
By the way, Intel motherboard with integrated RealTek sound. (Alienware Area-51 m9750).

EDIT: welcome back, by the way. Until about 24 days ago, I too was on vacation for 5 years! Played from 2003 to 2005 and came back to sound issues just as you did.

I have the occasional issue, for instance if a blood raider or sansha npc is firing on my ship in a belt I can't hear my own guns at all, etc, but overall I still prefer playing with sound on then sound off. Autocannons sound so good, they're worth coping with sound issues for.

Confirming that I have installed EVE on several computers, laptops and desktops of various brands, and sound works intermittently at best on all of them. I leave sound on for those rare occasions when it DOES work. I agree about autocannons sounding great :-)

Been playing since 03 here.
Eve has sound? I'm sure even the Dev's at this point laugh at that. Pretty ****e to have a game evolve as much as Eve has without anything being done about that. Imagine trying to sell the game to a friend when the topic of audio comes up. "Um yeah, eve doesn't do that."
But hey, soon we can have avatars dancing in stations right? Right?
Guys?

Yep, my sound has always done this. Turret/launcher sounds disappear and reappear randomly, more often the former than the latter. I'll hear one of my missiles launch, and then if I'm lucky one of the lasers hitting me, then nothing, just silent graphics... the only sounds that (almost) always work are the UI bleeps from clicking things in my overview, and targeting sounds.
Made even worse when I'm running 2 clients at once, as I often do. I've tried every fix I've found on these boards, nothing works. I've pretty much gotten resigned to it.

Had something odd happen the other day with sound, I turned my graphics settings to the absolute lowest, and lost my mining guns and turret sounds. I turned them back up to the recommended setting, and got my sound back. Which makes absolutely zero sense, but thought someone with sound issues might want to try fiddling with their graphics settings just in case.

Lame... I really WANT to like this game, but the fact that I can hardly read the UI font and can't get my sound to work makes it more annoying than fun to play most of the time.

Never had real problems with the sound, here o.O Nice music, acceptable sound effects, a few really nice effects..
'Only oddities I've found are occasional position<>volume issues with weapons fire, and a bi-weekly bug that stops the bgm until you give the jukebox a poke.
Dunno what everyone's going on about, frankly >.>

Been playing 4 and half years with sound off. There was a blue post in a thread a long time ago saying their sound guys would be sad to hear so many of us play with sound off, but I honestly just don't find the music/effect sounds to be appealing. And that was the last I saw a blue post in a "sound is broken" thread. _________________

must suck working on the sound team, knowing everyone just turns it off since it doesn't work.

Eve has sound?
I turned it off back when having sounds on used to drop your fps by good 5-10 frames per second when you're in combat. ____________________________

Yeah, that performance problem. They actually fixed that. Fixed it at the same time they broke everything else about it and ruined everything that could have been considered "useful" about it like the distinctive stargate and cloaking sounds (and let's not forget the music which now stops every few tracks).
But for the record, I only changed my sig because I was annoying myself with the last one.

The sound engine is broken and buggy as hell. It never plays the sounds it should be, and when it does give sounds it gives the really annoying WATOOOOOOSH as a laser hits its target even if your zoomed out.
