Edited by: Karn Dulake on 26/05/2010 11:46:25 Edited by: Karn Dulake on 26/05/2010 11:40:08 Question. Have you ever had your entire training regime changed due to a single incident in EVE?
I am only a few months into the game and my corp of Supernewbies were targeted by a team of higher experienced griefers.
we watched as everyone fell one at a time in ther mining ships to there cloaked ships and superior tactics and knowledge of the game.
Before i was happy to run the carebear route and grow into the game as a miner and builder and eventually turn to combat. Since we were wardeced i have come to one inescapable conclusion and that is that it does not matter what you have if you cannot defend it then its as worthless as a house built on sand.
Every skill point since that day has been invested in PvP skills and nothing else. My days training as a carebear are over.
Has any incident changed your outlook to this game?
(They have also told me that there only intention is to drive me out of the game so that i never play again or have to abandon the character so i have little choice but to change)
EDIT: Claska and Legs. Thanks for the information but apart from getting bored was there an incident that made you change tactics

Yes, after i chewed roids for my first BS (which i had to sell to get cash)i realised that i never EVER wanted to do it again, the only reason i would was for corp ops, now my toon has only ONE industriel skill and that was free when i made it, that is minning level 2.

Hi Legs here
One of my characters was set to be a dedicated miner/industrialist. Well, that got fairly old fairly quickly, and I moved her over to mission running. Much more profitable and fun.

Yep, same here. Started blissfully chopping rock and running missions until a griefer whomped on a mining op and ****ed me off. Now I look at that million SP in industry and wonder WTF was I thinking.

To answer your opening question: No.
Moving on, were you in hi-sec and were you subjet to a war-dec when this happened? If you have a large mining fleet, you should consider some form of weaponry. This could be some members of your fleet in PvP ships, all you fleet having myriad drones ready to react to any assault.
If you were not subject to a war-dec and this happened in hi-sec, the person(s) who attacked you would be popped by CONCORD, though their reaction times depends on the classification on the hi-sec you are in.

Drake it was a wardec and most of us were under 3 months old. The wardec is still on and people are training as best they can for PvP. As you know all you can do is wait for those skills to train. once we are even mildly useful we realise that we will have to lose a lot of ships before we can learn enough to counter.

Yes.
I used to only run missions in a raven. Then, when Apocrypha came out, I looked into wormholes. I was planning only only seeing if I could kill sleepers, but I found something different: someone mining alone in w-space.
I suddenly had a strange thought: I could attack him!
After my first taste of blood I immediately started training warp scrams and the like. Haven't done a mission since.

Yes many many times.
Mining plan changed to PvP after our first wardec PvP changed to caps after I went into 0.0 Caps changed to logistics after we got space in 0.0 Logistics changed to logistic ships after I left sov politics due to lagg
This happened over 4 years on one character, if I broke this down into separate areas I would be here all day, like when people preferred Apocs > Megas or the time when we had a few pos gunners only and limited shield repping ships for the pos.
Plans change but thats fine imo, you dont have to change your plan if you dont want to BUT if you feel you need to change your play style because of a corp decision then you should perhaps look for a new corp.

If you still got that somewhere on your logs you should petition this, pretty sure this in a very much against the EULA

That is a direct threat and a petitionable offence. Piracy, in game scamming, suicide ganking of ships, etc are all allowable by game mechanics and design. But if someone is going out of their way to make you a specific target 24/7 (23/7) then its consistent to "real" griefing.
Smack talk and insults are also allowable to a degree within the game. But there is a line that quite a lot of people cross with racial slurs, threats to physically harm etc. While most people don't think anything of this or just forget about it, these extremes are still harassment and petitionable.
Back when I was a newbie only a few months into the game (we're going back to autumn 2004 here) my corporation got into a war with a so called griefer and friends. Long story short this particular character by the name of BlueFlame (he might even still play and it was a fun afternoon admittedly) came looking for us. I was following him around being as careful as I could, poking occasional light hearted comments at him in local. Some how we came across the subject of smack talk and I said he was being very well behaved for a pirate, then he dropped the bomb shell. Apparently he'd been warned and threatened with banning for previous smack talk. Keep in mind we're talking old school hardcore griefers here, not half the wannabes you have these days. If that was true then its some indication of how seriously it has been taken for a long time. And this is just the most memorable one I have as a fluffy poddable newbie, there have been others since then.
If you're being specifically singled out, insulted and followed around all the time over a prolonged period of time. Not just a single empire corp war mind you, I mean several corps, you leave and join and npc corp and they continue to harass you. Petition it. If you're in sure about what to do about any situation there is also an information request section in the petitions system.
On top of all that you can usually find a few good people on the forums willing to jump in and help, be it intervening in a war, or teaching you how to fight. - - elorran is part time theoretical theorist, dedicated practitioner of Ti Kwan Leep, and an avid connoisseur of fine whines |

Actually that is not quite accurate. CCP recently stated a statistic that said that 40% of the minerals come from reprocessed loot.
So even if ever miner went away, we'd still have minerals from all the mission runners. It would be a bit more expensive though.
Knowing that, as soon as the servers come back up i'll be hunting down some more miners. .

After being 5 months in an empire mining corp working my *ss off for nothing in return, and 35% taxes I went to a 0.0 alliance. Great help from my mentor and the people in corp put me in the right direction (skillplan), and since then I never looked back.
Your first fights (everyone remembers them) give you the shakes, but after a while you get used to it and actually can be "cool" enough to know what the heck you're doing :) PvP is thrilling, in a group with friends it's even better. (Just make sure your group of friends < 100 or you get lag :P)

My skillplans have always been aimed at whatever I felt like doing at the time. After a while, you will find that the core set of skills improve most areas, regardless of race flown, and which activity you spend your time doing. Those skills were my last skillplan. Now I just train whatever I feel like. :) Additionally, it really infuriates me, when people use some pointless rant about signatures as a sig. |

As an alternative, you could find an alliance willing to take you in, that could provide protection. And of course, as others have said, assuming you still have the chat logs that contained the other guys statement, I'd petition it.

Hell, I love miners for several reasons: 1. They love mining and don't realize that it's one of the most boring professions in the game (hint: anything that can be macroed easily is boring and repetitive) 2. Because of #1 there will always be a fresh supply of ships on the market, as miners do the b*tch work eve so that the real men can have fun 3. Miner tears are oh-so-sweet 4. Their ships make nice targets.
So miners, keep doing your jobs so that I can continue to have my fun with you

First, those stats were released before Dominion with sovereignty upgrades.
Second, those stats were released before the great mission loot nerf of Tyrannis.
As for the OP - I started off thinking that I'd mine my way to fortune. That died about the time that I realised that mission running would make more ISK/hr, and to do missions quickly I'd be training skills that were actually useful in PvP.
Then I discovered trade and manufacturing.

Yep.
It was my second day playing and I was happily mining Veldspar in a Probe, a proud local resident of Pator. I was saving for my first ever Rifter, painstakingly shipping the ore to the station when my hold was full. Circa 2005
As luck would have it, I learned the joys of jet can mining and soon fell prey to the ore thief. As I discussed this in corp chat, I remember one individual being a real jerk about it. I challenged him/her on their rudeness... a mistake I would pay for the next day.
As I sat happily mining, the CEO showed up on overview nearby in a battleship. I thought this was pretty cool, never having seen any other ship classes yet in my newbish days. I didn't feel too hot as a yellow target reticule showed up around his ship, and then red.
I saw a bright point of light coming toward me which I knew was danger, and started to warp... Lesson 2: Scrambled.
My probe, the cargo, and my pod were promptly incinerated by a Bane Torpedo from Baron Fharo of The Corp At The End of The Universe. I was chastised for speaking rudely to a corp member and kicked immediately after the explosion. I tried to plead my case showing the chat logs of all sorts of racist and homophobic remarks, but to no avail: The jerk had made up his closed mind (not that it needed much).
I have kept him in my address book since then, casually tracking his whereabouts through location agents and intelligence friends. Revenge is a dish best served cold, and I heard that in space, no one can hear you scream....
Stay tuned for my revenge video!

Back in 2006 I got my first battleship, a scorpion that deserved better than the fail fittings and suicide pvp that I would subject it to. We were at war and a red came in system so I undocked and found the scoundrel, heart pumping at the thought of winning a solo fight I locked him, mashed the F keys and to my surprise suddenly exploded.
The large amounts of whiskey I'd imbibed prior to the incident may have been the cause of me accidentally targeting a neutral and thus being concorded, it was almost certainly the cause of my ferox also getting concorded when I undocked before my GCC wore off.
The next morning I tried to change my training regime by buying the 'common sense' skill book only to find out that Minmatars are allergic to common sense, the sole result of training the skill was that I had a sore head and felt mildly nauseous. For these reasons I trained myself to only drink tea or ale when flying expensive ships and stick to frigate hulls when drinking whiskey. _______

For all that is lost something is gained, jaded cynicism is the endgame of eve.
It is a happy place where your appreciation of fine whine allows you to troll, insult, encourage and inform all in the one forum post. It's odd but having reached the point where my lemon has no zest left I'm looking forward to training up a mining toon and mindlessly nattering on vent, whatever faith in humanity this game removes from you can be restored through friendship. _______

Lol, this is why there are so few miners and non combat specced toons on eve. And they're all in npc corps. The current wardec mechanic is pathetic. 5 mil? What kind of chump change is that? It ought to be 5 bil. It gives incentives to attack multiple noobie corps. Should be called "griefer strike" as opposed to "wardec."
25bil for an alliance dec, no weekly fee after that. If mutual, receiver also give 25 bil and it's added to a pot, winner gets 50 bil, plus losers POSes, hangar and all assets. Set goal for winning depending on kills and isk destroyed. High stakes, high rewards, large long-drawn wars, between large alliances, as opposed to this pathetic noob-poaching CCP is calling a highsec "wardec."
