UTC is a scientific standard used when an accuracy better than +/- 0.9 seconds is required. The time involved in patching online software inherently contains a much larger margin of error than this.
Why not just the more familiar, and for our purposes equivalent, GMT?

Because no country is currently at GMT at present due to Summer Time?
It's not as though it actually makes a difference. |

Considering GMT is no longer the offical basis for time zones all over the world since nearly 40 years now did you just want to look dumb or could you really not come up with a better topic to troll with? |

Iceland is GMT/UTC, whatever... Why they don't just say GMT is beyond me. |

they are using UTC in an attempt to remind drunk Brits that they are on BST right now and hence not synced to GMT. |

It's the coordinated Universal Time - seems very apropos for EvE, no? |

Edited by: Ti''anla on 26/05/2010 17:10:30 Also, as the OP said, UTC is a scientific standard for when accuracy is important.
EVE's most critical requirement is that synchronisation remains constant between server and client, I think that demands a high accuracy rating (even if there is a lot more to it than both knowing what time it is).
Why not use the most accurate time possible for your server? And why not in turn use that as the basis for everything else? Makes sense to me. |

sorry i was just quoting Wiki.....
Many modern electronic devices such as the iPod use maps and city names instead of configuring time display via traditional time zones. On such devices, it is possible to display UTC or Zulu time by selecting Reykjavik, Iceland, which is always on UTC time and does not use daylight savings.
you had better contact them and let them know |

Do you consider asking all questions to be dumb, or just those few that you can answer?

This.
Every year, there's a crapflood of posts from Brits with imperial delusions, and severe deficiencies in the common knowledge department, and telling them that BST != GMT seem to be pointless, so CCP now uses UTC instead. |

Edited by: Professor Tarantula on 26/05/2010 17:20:03 The UTC is a tool of our shapeshifting reptilian overlords to psychologically prepare us for the one world government/new world order. After it is implemented, all talk of there ever being time zones will be erased from history, and schools will teach that UTC was first invented by Jesus, who will be regarded as a reptilian messiah from Venus. |

We do. Right now we have about twenty hours of daylight, with a wonderful sunset/sunrise occupying the remaining four hours. You should see the number of people wearing shorts in the office today! |

Also, as the OP said, UTC is a scientific standard for when accuracy is important.
That's not all it's for. Every other time zone in the world is defined as an offset from UTC.
The reason CCP and most other globally utilized data services run their clocks on UTC is because there is never any daylight savings time, and the offset is always zero. This makes log analysis and other tasks far easier to do, because no time conversion calculations are required.

Not to mention that since eve is literally a worldwide game it makes sense to have a common time standard that never varies. So if you call for a fleet op at 0600 then everyone will know exactly when to log on. |

We used to use GMT but have been trying more and more to use UTC for our timezone terminology. It is a standard and doesn't change with the seasons. |

Because you fail.
If you set your clock to GMT and UTC it will show the same times. However if you set your clock to British Summer time (GMT + 1 hour) you'll get 17.30 UTC and 18.30 British time.

GMT doesn't change either it's always the same and exactly the same as UTC
it's just that in the summer people in britain change to GMT+1 or BST. so your reasoning is a bit off :P |
