So, I was wondering if any other mac users have compared performance between the Steam copy of EVE Online and the standard version downloaded off the EVE website.
Mainly I just want to know if there is a difference in performance, IE is CCP using whatever method valve is using to run the games natively, or does the steam install still use Cider to port the game?
Thanks! - Aidan Patrick |

Valve games are based on a simple generic engine. That engine has been rewritten to use (a subset of) OpenGL instead of (a subset of) DirectX. Then the games are being slowly checked for problems with the new engine, fixed, and finally released as applications for the Mac.
EvE uses an extremely complex and specific engine. That engine is not (and AFAIK will not) be rewritten in OpenGL. EvE requires an implementation of DirectX to run. Cider is that implementation.

Steam is just a delivery platform where Eve is concerned. Nothing is different about what it installs. Just where it gets installed based on your Steam configuration.

It's the cider wrapped version of the game. It's just put in the Steam folder hierarcy rather than Applications.
Performance should be about the same, possibly a little less depending on if the steamcloud thingie tries to fire up in the background.

Yeah, with steam running in the background it prob would be slower. If CCP delivered a OpenGL implementation for EVE so Cider would no longer be required on the Mac, I hope to hell they would tell us and not just sneak it out on Steam So yeah, just normal Cider version I'm afraid.

Pity. Guess it's not worth installing EVE via steam on my mac then since running steam will just kill my mac mini's performance even more. (the current eve client with Cider kills it. Somewhat akin to a titan using a doomsday on a frigate and actually hitting it.
Thanks for the answers. - Aidan Patrick |
