Something atmospheric, challenging, and well, fun, if possible.
As for the FPS part, something akin to Thief or Bioshock, no MW crap please.
And PC only.
Thanks!

Mass Effect 2.
and for that matter, Mass Effect 1.
ME1 was an RPG with shooter elements. ME2 was a shooter with RPG elements.
Both were excellent. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Edited by: Adora Femella on 28/05/2010 15:06:19 Well system shock 2 and Deus ex would be very similar to the examples you gave, but the games are getting to be a bit old. I don't really know any good new games outside mass effect and fallout 3, that would fit the description.

Uuuh, I just remembered how much I loved Europa 1400. It was kind of a "medieval life simulator", where you had to manage a medieval business (from churches to blacksmiths to taverns) with a dynasty spanning 200 years. Any other games like this on the market?
I know of its successor, but It was a major dissapointment

I own every paradox game, as well as M&B. Looking forward to Vicky 2.
Seems like I already have the cream of the genre.

You haven't mentioned if you have Sins of a solar empire, if you haven't played that give it a go, you should be able to pick it up plus the 2 expansions relatively cheap.

Give ai war a spin. It's kinda like a cross between supreme commander with some tower defence elements and deep 4x strategy added in for good measure. Plus the developer is extremely active with the game on nearly a day to day basis and has implimented loads of player recommended stuff. Not the moast overwhelmingly eye candy stuffed game around but tbh you get used to the sprite oriented graphics quickly. Hell most games look exactly like a game of sup com in space with the strategic zoom and the fact your units are almost always in icon mode.

:hi-five: for vicky2
yeah, apart from sins of a solar empire was mentioned above, i can't really think of anything, games recently have been so...zzz
i think your best bet is to try some of the games you have with some good mods, they're occasionally out there.
edit: also, i thought distant worlds was potentially interesting, but economically/strategically boring what with everything being oddly behind the scenes
also also, another thought would be x3: reunion and x3: terran conflict _____________________ Horrors! Demons in the deep! |

Nexus the jupiter incident (screenshot) - spaceship game, control a small battlegroup of ships and fight various enemies, very tactical and steep enough learning curve, looks amazing for its age
Silent Storm (screenshot) - commando's style game, turn based like UFO: Enemy Unknown, except with ww2 commando team, another great looking game but slow
Silent Hunter III (screenshot) - submarine sim, very tactical and very hard at its later stages
Freelancer - you've probably played this but if not, its a great story and a very atmospheric game
Galactic Civ II - civilization / master of orion hybrid, slow burning but good fun, a little too much micro management though

I remember being underwhelmed by Spellforce, though Sacred's idea always interested me, dl'ing now, but yeah, I have to agree with Chaos Incarnate, this year has been very boring for a man a my tastes. I think I'm going to reinstall Arcanum and VTM:bloodlines and save the world for the n-th time:)

I would just like to throw a vote towards Sword of the Stars. A 4x type game, but I love it.
It's available on steam as well, though I'm not sure if steam is still over-charging for it or not.

+1 for AI war.
Only complaints ive seen about the game is that its too hard to understand (your an eve player, htfu), and the sprite graphics. I play supcom in perma-sprite mode, so no problem there.

Then what about Borderlands? Anno 1404 Venice the expansion of Anno is out, otherwise settlers 7 maybe? Or Red Dead Redemption? And if you're really in to baldur's gate style rpg give Dragon Age a shot and don't forget the expansion to it :)

I'm recommending the Baldur's Gate series definitely. Bioware always has had the tendency to make the second game of a series better than it's prequel. In overall I enjoy BG2 much more than BG1 due to it's better quality and funny dialogs and easter eggs.
They also did the same with Mass Effect: Mass Effect plays better and has more fun elements in it.

yeah, diplomacy for sins is out. I don't really know if it's that exciting, the starbases seemed like a good upgrade from basic sins but diplomacy just adds funny huggy-feely buffships instead of...y'know, cool stuff _____________________ Horrors! Demons in the deep! |

Command and Conquer: Renegade (if you can find it!) --> Also, multiplayer servers *may* still be available, dunno...
Morrowind and Oblivion, of course. --> I still have Oblivion on my PC, with about 40 mods enabled (mostly graphics enhancement or fixes). Win7 actually gave it new life too...
As for strategy, Starcraft II is supposed to be out pretty soon.

I would like to play Bioshock 2 and the Mass Effect games, but the DRM & other 'additional running' software is a bit of a stopper (especially since I'd be getting these from Steam - most of that becomes redundant).

oddly, one of my problems with ME is that it doesnt give me any information. Compared to the spreadsheet-esque amounts of information you can find on the TES wiki, the ME wiki is almost empty. And I never could find a page that adequately explained the 'accuracy' number.

I played it intensively for a week or two. In the end, thumbs down until they fix the game. Quite similar to Galciv/MOO/HoI3, the core idea is good but the implementation was rather sloppy. While it did excite and occupy my time for several days, there's little reason for me to keep playing it long term. Even with the 1.0.4.5 patch, the game feels half-finished.
Why? Way too many reasons to list here. Atrocious loading time. Save times can go over 5 mins. Antiquated file path i.e not default to Program Files during install. Unsettling windows like dialog boxes ingame. Bad hard to read font for main UI - the Galactopedia fonts were better. Shallow techs. Too many aliens (over 20), not enough uniqueness. Ad nauseum, I cba to type this all day.
One of the biggest game breaker for my case was that _time_ moves the same when you're running solar system battles. It's devastating in large games because hundreds of things can literally scroll past before you can react. Yes, the automation helps a lot but whats the point of playing this game if you're going to automate 75-90% of the stuffs? No thanks.
Once you spend hours playing this game, you'll discover than more than half the time you spend fighting the unintuitive UI which suffers from slow updates as your list grows.
The only 4x game that stays on my HDD is Sword of the Stars due to the infinite replayability. Checkout the North Star project from the same company (Kerberos). If it pans out as envisioned by them, that ought to be a very interesting future title to keep an eye on. |
