Hello everyone,
So I came across something interesting today and wanted to see if anyone had a thought, perspective, or opinion on it. Part of what I've been doing is buying items in one region and reselling them for a profit in a different region. I found one particular module that has been doing pretty well for me, high turnover and netting about a 35% profit margin.
So today when I went back to restock, I noticed there was a sell order up with over 150 of said items in it, surrounded (within a few isks) by other sell orders of 2, 5, and 7ish items apiece.
I was only going to restock to the tune of about 15 items so I bought up a 7-item order, a 5-item order, and a 2-item order. To my surprise, they all reappeared! So I bought up the 5-item sell order again and it reappeared again!
I checked my transactions journal and Lo and Behold, all but one of these orders belonged to the same person! He had multiple low-volume orders up that 'hid' behind each other.
I am wondering if anyone has any comments on this particular strategy or tactic? I mean, obviously I fell for it because I bought those orders up even though I could have purchased the entire lot from the high volume order which was nearly identically priced.
Is this a recognized tactic that people use? Since I'm pretty new at trading I figured I'd see if anybody had heard of this particular tactic or knows whether it is effective . . .
Thanks!

The small ones didn't 'reappear', they were never touched. Regardless of which order you clicked, you got your items from the lowest sell order (probably the large stack).

Ohh I see. And actually, now that I think of it, there was only one of the said sell orders that was cheaper than the big stack - which would explain why one purchase was from a different seller.
So undercutting really IS undercutting . . . you can't choose which sell order you buy from? Hah, well this question turned into a noob education forum . . .nothing more to see . . . move along :)

Also, when selling large amounts I often use multiple orders at slightly different prices, as people are more likely to undercut large orders to get their own to sell in a reasonable amount of time.

There was a database glitch a month ago that acted like it. I was selling 'some ammo' in 'some station' and 'someone' undercut me by a huge margin. I decided to just buy him out and relist. Sadly that ammo didnt want to go away. I ended up buying it 5 times. I even made a petition but GM didnt bother to read it and it expired .... Said ammo disappeared after DT.
