Ive heard it said Heavy for PVE HAM for PVP, but whats the real story? Im hearing mixed things. Some tell me that the DPS difference between the two is minimal, while some tell me HAM dps is uber high.
So, Ham vs Heavy, whats the real scoop? Pros/cons? PVP pro cons?

it depends on how you fit your midslots actually. both weapon systems are viable for both occasion. srsly, it's how you fit your midslots are actually matters.

Ok, well on my heavy missile drake I have 2 LSEs, 2 invuln field 2s a MWD and a warp disruptor. On my ham drake I have 1 LSE, 2 invuln fields, a warp disruptor and a web. given those kind of fits, whats the scoop with these 2?

Hams = more damage and thats about it.
HMLs = can fit more tank, have more range, more volley.
I've only got t2 HMLs, and havent rly flown a HAM drake (but i know people who do) but i really prefer HMLs in gang.
The only situation id see HAMS better, is in solo/very small gang PvP. Mostly due to gank is better than tank in those situations.

I honestly never understood why people sacrifice all that range for a bit more damage in PvE.

ignoring drones, a 2 BCU HAM drake with faction ammo, does the same as a 3 BCU HML drake with fury ammo.
you really don't want to use Fury with HAM's unless shooting battleships, whereas fury with HML will hit BC's well.
personally i swear by HML's 4 times the range, can hit smaller things better, and only marginally worse DPS, but easier to fit.
for a good comparison both ships shooting faction ammo
due to sig and speed on an untackled rifter(200mm plate) HML 83 DPS HAM 55 DPS
webbed and scramed rifter HML 155 DPS HAM 125 DPS
Against a 800mm rupture untackled HML 325 DPS HAM 319 DPS
once the rupture is tackled the HAM's start to pull ahead.
webbed and scramed rupture HML DPS HAM DPS

Edited by: Alsyth on 11/06/2010 12:30:56 HAM : better dps (only on either big and slow targets or webbed and painted targets), less range, fitting issues.
HML : everything else, basically.
Apart from solo or very small gang BC vs BC/BS (at <15 km range), I think HAMs are not very useful. See that Cane kiting you ? See that Blackbird at 50km ? Well, you're screwed if you have HAM (javelins << HML).

HAM = solo/very small gang (3-4). HML = gangs, especially if you nano it.
A HAM-Drake is basically god-mode against almost everything its own size or smaller but in a gang situation HML's have better damage projection (hard to get out or range without also being out the fight), painters that benefit the whole gang, better (or more accurately, more precise) damage against smaller ships allowing you to clear tacklers and nanoships from the fight (particularly Vaga's and Recons) and the ability to fit FoF's (more useful than you might think. Falcons/Rooks don't enjoy a FoF spewing Drake MWD'ing right into their faces).
HAM's shine for solo and very small gangs due to higher damage as well as packing web and scram (compulsory on HAM fits). The extra range of heavies isn't an issue in these kinds of engagement (especially if you pack Jav's, which you should, to deal with people trying to kite you at around 24km). Edited by: Flitterby on 11/06/2010 20:39:50 I'll add that for Drakes, HAMs are only better than HML if you can fit an equal number of BCU. HAM Drake requires a PG fitting mod, which consumes either a low slot or a rig slot. This means that you give up a BCU, a DC2, a nanofiber, or a field extender rig. If you drop a BCU for a fitting mod then you're an idiot because that completely negates the DPS advantage of HAMs. If you drop one of the other mods, you lose a lot of tank or agility on what is now a short-range ship.
For these reasons, I think HAM Drake is clearly inferior to HML Drake for almost all purposes.
For ships other than the Drake the PG requirements of HAMs may not be as big a problem.

Might be worth to mention that HAM drake wins vs hml drake in 1v1 though.

Not if the HML Drake kites (and he'll have more tank). And it happens.

That's true. With AWU 5 or Shield Upgrades 5 you can fit a HAM drake with a 3% PG mod (~25m). With lower skills the 5% will be required (~150m). I don't think of fitting implants very often, because they're hard to come by out where I am. I should import some perhaps....

Sure, the HML Drake could use more CPU, but you can get an excellent fit without fitting mods or implants. My point is that the HAM Drake is significantly weaker than the HML Drake if you use a fitting mod/rig. (The use of PG implants undermines my point, if you have PG implants available.)

For excellent hml fit - 3x t2 bcs, t2 disruptor and m4 web you NEED cpu implant. Same with pg implant for hamdrake.
Even if you switch bcu to pdu on hamdrake, it will do around 40 more dps than hml drake /+ it will be able to use small nos or neut and it will have around 5k ehp more/. So it definitely isnt significantly weaker when using fitting mod.

Without CPU implant you can fit either a t2 LSE or a t2 disruptor, but not both. Yes, the CPU implant buys you something, but the lack of it doesn't seriously gimp your fitting.
I'll defer to your experience on the HAM Drake, since I've only toyed with fitting it and not actually flown one. EFT FTW!

I like them both... but honestly my Drakes tend to the HML side - enough that I trained HML5 before HAM5 with Liang.
