When is it coming out?
I've heard whispers of it since I first started playing around the time of exodus, if I remember right..

No one knows, but CCP confirmed that it won't be released this year. This ofcourse is assuming you believe the lies, that such a project still actually exists and CCP has plans on completing it.

They've already had multiple years to do it. It's not like a fully-developed FPS or anything, just a few station environments and character models. You'd think they would've had it done by now...
I've actually heard from a lot of gamers that one of the reasons they don't play eve is because they can't have their own complete avatar instead of a portrait by the way...

Do you think those "gamers" would fit into eve? After all, it is serious business.

Ambulation has been renamed to Incarna.
The development of Incarna has pushed Fanfast 2010 to March 2011 so hopefully summer 2011.

Yeah, except it isn't. It was that, back when it was called 'Walking in Stations' as a concept name, but since they renamed it Ambulation, the old project was scrapped and started over, because it was felt there'd be no reason to use the 'just a few station environments and character models'.
The system was reworked, and at this point actually bears more resemblance to second life - including player content-creation from what the devs have talked about (queue trolls Destination SkillQueue raving about lies, betrayal, and how every expansion should be full-featured and never need developing further post-release).
So here, quick status report: * Ambulation, the prject name, has since had the name Incarna applied to it. Incarna is the expansion name, as Planetary Interaction had Tyrannis applied to it once its expansion was set. * Job openings have been advertised for a new employee to 'Supervise the pose-release development of the new Incarna expansion'. * The graphics engine is basically done, as advertised at demos in fanfests. * A developer confirmed shortly before Tyrannis was deployed that they're aiming to include a 'Small but valuable part of Incarna in the Winter expansion'.
Most of the non-haters seem to be of the opinion that Incarna should be out within three development cycles, give or take. So rough estimate 18 months. More realistically vague estimate: 12-24 months.

Personally I don't have any attachments to machines, so I would like to have an actual avatar(no a portrait doesn't cut it). It is common sense that it is easier to identify with a unique full body avatar than a mass produced vehicle. Also from my RPG forum whoring experience I can say, that having an avatar that you can customize extensively to fit the players imagination is extremely important to many people. It goes so far, that some refuse to play games, that don't allow extensive customisation of the character they play.
All of this might not mean that much to many current players, but it will to many who aren't yet playing the game and aren't even going to try until this huge gaping hole in the game is fixed. For me MMOs are all about living in a fantastic world with your avatar, so a MMO that doesn't allow you to see or control your own is unfinished as far as I am concerned. Any features CCP creates on top of that are secondary to actually finally having a decent avatar.

Indeed. Sometimes I wonder if the somewhat new eve players will jump over to jumpgate evolution after that comes out, since it advertises itself as being nothing like eve's snail-crawl speed skill system.

I think most people are hoping that they switch over to a game that's more dependent on avatars, such as getting (better) missions by using your avatar, or starting longer epics with your avatar, or simply doing other services such as responding to an NPC placed in a player owned store with your avatar. Things such as these would add to the gameplay.
And yes, I want to look at my avatar.
I also want to shoot things with my avatar, personally...

Most likely early 2011 or late 2011. And we will get a teaser taste of whats coming with incarna allready in the next expansion in Nov/dec 2010.

They've mentioned a little more than stores, and implied a good bit more still. Have a look at the demo videos linked in my post above. Yes, stores are the only confirmed, definite, absolutely iron-clad, stated bit, but it's not the 'only' thing.

I mean, I want to know what else and I've looked but I've only heard about stores. I've watched the demos. Customizing your clothes, I admit, I don't find very interesting. The mini-game looks cute but again, I don't consider that a worthwhile feature. What else have you heard?
I really don't think they can effectively integrate use of avatars with other parts of the game. I mean, dealing with market orders with your avatar sitting in the background seems unnecessary. Personally I fear the use of avatars is best in gameplay styles like FPSs and The Sims. Neither of those elements will be in EVE. I can't think of what else they could do that would really make an interesting gaming experience with avatars. Can you think of anything? -- autechre - ep7 - track 1: rpeg estevancarlos.com |

Edited by: V''hellu on 12/06/2010 14:59:37 Let them get the ambulation (or incarna, whatever) out first, and then see if they add more gameplay portions to it. Who knows, they might start doing missions that require ambulation, such as hunting someone down with a rifle inside a station or something, sort of like the mechanics for SWG, maybe?
All I know is I would like to have an avatar. That in-station game looks like something I would play often too, as missions and mining can get boring after a while...

Mh.. well, a couple of things leap to mind.
* Limited player-content creation. - Okay, you said that mayn't interest you, but still. Plus we don't really know what they mean by limited, but they did at one point say they hoped it'd include making costumes to compliment an initially limited, default wardrobe.
* The mini-games. - Again, you noted that.
* Corporate Offices. Various sizes, but by default comprising a public lobby with customisable NPCs (ala shops and bars) and a space wherein corporations can hold meetings and planning (a long term suggested goal was the integration of planning-aids like controllable 3D maps in the meeting spaces). - Confirmed feature.
* It was implied there'd be the possibility of viewing ships from the outside, like visiting your docking bay.
* It was also implied there'd be some sort of agent-like system that was limited to being out-of-capsule. Like in-station missions or something, but again, this was the vaguest of all the posited ideas.
* One DUST 514 interview stated they had long-term hopes of making Incarna a bridge whereby DUST mercs could meet directly with capsuleers.
HOWEVER
One thing they have stated firmly, is that, to begin with and to avoid the Newbie's-spoon-in-the-Allianc-leader's-eye problem, Incarna will not include any combat. But they also said it wasn't off the table for future versions of Incarna.

Adding a feature that incomplete is not a good idea. I mean, people complain about their expansions now. An avatar expansion where you mostly walk around and talk is extremely outside of the style of EVE. They would have to add real gameplay features first. I hope they come up with something. I wish people would tell me what those features are. -- autechre - ep7 - track 1: rpeg estevancarlos.com |

Where'd you see that?
The only, only time I ever saw this even come up was in an engine demo where two capsuleers visited a docking bay to look at a ship from below. .. Ergo, implied.
'Closest to actual text on the matter was when I saw a dev' say at one point they'd keep something resembling the current interface for those who wanted to be quickly in-and-out of stations for refits and stuff (or just plain found Incarna offensive).

I believe they said it in a demo before Apocrypha came out. They were presenting t3 ships and talking about walking in station. They answered a question about this or something to the nature, and pretty plainly said that they weren't even considering it.

Oh, right!
* Lots of talk about limited, conditional item exchange ability on player-controlled NPCs, enough to create rudimentary missions.

I wonder about this. I honestly think it would be a great addition to 0.0 wars. I don't know what else they would do to eject people from a station that has been taken over.
