Ever since the introduction of the new graphics engine the sound engine of the game has gone through the gutter. It either doesn't work right or sounds can't be heard because they are too far away.
What i'm pointing at is the current PVP alliance tournament. compare videos of this from the first few tournaments and you can hear all the explosions, lasers and web cycles going on on the grid (further away is still lower volume but not muted like it is right now.
Why did ccp change the sound fall-off to such a short distance that half of the time you can't hear anything.
Also, why is the quieted turret sounds a default setting when it is clearly broken. I for the longest time when flying around in missions haven't been able to hear my own guns fire half the time or even AT the right time. When I turned quieted turret sounds off I could hear them again, but still I can only hear them when my camera is close up. Missiles being fired or exploding in the distance... I hear nothing.
Most of the changes to the effects in the game Havn't been an improvement in my opinion and the sound engine is worse off then it was a long time ago. Graphic improvements are fine and all (the new scorpion looks great) but perhaps CCP needs to put some more effort into getting their sound engine to work properly again.
Space might contain no sound, but my gaming experience suffers without it.
O and before you go and say, EVE has sound? :P
I'll beat you to is and say that: I hope it does again soon. --------------------------------------------- Somewhere beyond happyness and sadness, I need to calculate what creates my own madness o/ |

Perhaps they should introduce a slider in the options menu that allows you to choose how strong we want the sound falloff to be.
I prefer to hear sounds that originate from far away as well, just like it used to be before they changed it. Others might not. But every time I go into combat in this game I am irritated by the lack of sound feedback.
Feedback is a very important part of any game. without it whatever you do feels weakened. It can be as subtle as a blinking button when activated to the dulled deafening roar of a structure exploding far of in the distance.
I still encounter structures exploding in missions that don't make any sound unless I move my camera right up next to it.
If some people like the current way sound falloff is executed, then a slider should solve this problem effectively. It allows players to use all their senses to understand a situation.

Its more about the feedback that i'm missing than any specific problem. There might not be sound in space, but thats irrelevant as this is a strategic action game and any form of audio feedback is important.
Being able to see a massive explosion a hundred kilometers away but never hearing the sound breaks my suspension of disbelief.
Just a few simple options in the sound menu, properly executed, could solve this. Something like:
- A slider for sound falloff strength. - A properly working quiet turret sounds function. - Perhaps a specific toggle section for sounds like the warp tunnel etc.
If sounds are simulated by our pods. why wouldn't it be perfectly logical for us to have some more specific control over them. --------------------------------------------- Somewhere beyond happyness and sadness, I need to calculate what creates my own madness o/ |
