Ever since the introduction of the new graphics engine the sound engine of the game has gone through the gutter. It either doesn't work right or sounds can't be heard because they are too far away.
What i'm pointing at is the current PVP alliance tournament. compare videos of this from the first few tournaments and you can hear all the explosions, lasers and web cycles going on on the grid (further away is still lower volume but not muted like it is right now.
Why did ccp change the sound fall-off to such a short distance that half of the time you can't hear anything.
Also, why is the quieted turret sounds a default setting when it is clearly broken. I for the longest time when flying around in missions haven't been able to hear my own guns fire half the time or even AT the right time. When I turned quieted turret sounds off I could hear them again, but still I can only hear them when my camera is close up. Missiles being fired or exploding in the distance... I hear nothing.
Most of the changes to the effects in the game Havn't been an improvement in my opinion and the sound engine is worse off then it was a long time ago. Graphic improvements are fine and all (the new scorpion looks great) but perhaps CCP needs to put some more effort into getting their sound engine to work properly again.
Space might contain no sound, but my gaming experience suffers without it.
O and before you go and say, EVE has sound? :P
I'll beat you to is and say that: I hope it does again soon. --------------------------------------------- Somewhere beyond happyness and sadness, I need to calculate what creates my own madness o/ |

Uh, it's not broken. That's working as intended...
They changed it so that sounds far away from your camera/ship wouldn't play (this can actually help on low performance machines in some cases). ---

Perhaps they should introduce a slider in the options menu that allows you to choose how strong we want the sound falloff to be.
I prefer to hear sounds that originate from far away as well, just like it used to be before they changed it. Others might not. But every time I go into combat in this game I am irritated by the lack of sound feedback.
Feedback is a very important part of any game. without it whatever you do feels weakened. It can be as subtle as a blinking button when activated to the dulled deafening roar of a structure exploding far of in the distance.
I still encounter structures exploding in missions that don't make any sound unless I move my camera right up next to it.
If some people like the current way sound falloff is executed, then a slider should solve this problem effectively. It allows players to use all their senses to understand a situation.

It doesn't seem to be 100% fixed, but it's much better than it was....

Couldn't agree more here. Like the warp acceleration sound effect. Why did they remove it again?

Since Tyranis I have noticed that if I AFK travel through a jump gate or undock, that when I tab out that there is a blaring amount of "radio" chatter that is deafening at times that will loop, only way to avoid it is to scroll out as far as possible or tab back in real quick after it occurs. Anyone happen to know which slidder under the audio tab affects this kind of thing ?

They removed it because people used to constantly while about warping being too loud in the forums. I guess they can't please everyone.
As for looping radio chatter, yea, it's annoying as hell when alt-tabbed...
The new sound engine? It's pretty terrible compared to most other online games, and even the old engine. They need to put some serious dev resources into it and move it to version 2.0.

In space no one can hear you scream.
Well anyways, i like it. I can just zoom out and don't be bothered with all the crappy sound effects.

That's lame it was there from the start and after 7 years they remove it because some people whine about it. Oh wait here is a simple fix... INI SETTINGS FILE - TRUE OR FALSE
Returning to the whine fact. I don't think you would see people who loved it making threads about how much they loved it, get my point?
Thank you very much whiners now I have to whine!

Edited by: Messoroz on 14/06/2010 00:05:41 Sound can't travel much in space because there isn't much of a medium for it to travel through(air on earth, gases and other stuff work too, but space is empty) as it is essentially just vibrations/compression of air that our ears pickup.

The sound in EVE is being created by your pod. You are not actually hearing anything outside the ship. The pod creates the audio simply to prevent pilots going deaf from silence. ôRemember this. Trust your eyes, you will kill each other. Trust your veins, you can all go home in peace.ö

But EVE space is filled with liquid, so your argument is invalid.

Its more about the feedback that i'm missing than any specific problem. There might not be sound in space, but thats irrelevant as this is a strategic action game and any form of audio feedback is important.
Being able to see a massive explosion a hundred kilometers away but never hearing the sound breaks my suspension of disbelief.
Just a few simple options in the sound menu, properly executed, could solve this. Something like:
- A slider for sound falloff strength. - A properly working quiet turret sounds function. - Perhaps a specific toggle section for sounds like the warp tunnel etc.
If sounds are simulated by our pods. why wouldn't it be perfectly logical for us to have some more specific control over them. --------------------------------------------- Somewhere beyond happyness and sadness, I need to calculate what creates my own madness o/ |

Ah that sort of "rippling wind" sound effect. I kinda miss it too, though it's probably because it was the first 'style' I heard (like how everyone has a favourite login theme depending on when they first started playing Eve). I watched tons of videos before I started playing. I think this was changed/removed sometime around Dominion, rather than recently, but correct me if I'm wrong. Here's another old video - Clicky showing it.

Yeah, an Aquanox MMO would steal most of CCP's subsim market. Additionally, it really infuriates me, when people use some pointless rant about signatures as a sig. |

Uhmmmm , they don't know how , obviously . The sound issues have plagued Eve since i can remember . My sound actually worked the first year , flawlessly , i might add . Then the second year it became so bad , with bugs , i turned it off and have listened to my own music .
I like it now !
