Touched on in a book called Schismatrix Plus by Bruce Sterling.
World class science fiction IMHO.

The search for aliens is pointless...
...because in the 5,000-10,000 years it would take an average species capable of human levels of intelligence to go from hitting each other with sticks to discovering the rules of the universe that we haven't actually discovered yet but are probably less than a millennia from doing so, as well as figuring out how to benefit from them (pause for breath)...
...that species would 'evolve'/'artificially manipulate' themselves into becoming non-corporeal entities. There are no physical aliens capable of radio contact, because in the blink of an eye (in galactic time) it took them to evolve, they got to the inevitable end point of shedding their mortal coils.
Waddaya reckon'?

Its bullcrap. It sounds like something Ray Kurzweil would say. The idea that all species will inevitably convert themselves into machines is sheer nonsense, and is only an idea romanticized and sexed up by scifi books and movies.
It would be much more detrimental for a species to do this then it would be beneficial.

I like to think that galactic civilizations are either successful -relatively quickly taking forms we're not able to detect and/or understand, or unsuccessful - collapsing before or soon after they discover radio technology.
Obviously, we are very close to second scenario.

Yeah, obviously, we're so much worse off now than we used to be.

People talk of 'alien invaders'. But what If Aliens were on Earth before man and what If Aliens seeded mankind in the first place on planet earth. And that aliens have been doing stuff, tinkering here and there since man could walk. The notion of 'alien invaders' to me then is if it invades your dogmatic value system.
The moment in 2010 A Space Odyessy where the monolith did something to the monkey's brains that gave them the spark of 'technology' - using a bone as a tool\weapon i thought was very intriguing. .................................................. Cylon cultural victor! |

Alleged UFO wreck believed to be 150 million years old, dinosaurs found inside.
I have no evidence whether this is real or not - I cannot disprove or prove it. Extremely important if actually real. Who knows.

We are not worse, that's for sure. But we're kinda stagnating which might be a bad sign.

Where's that? We seem to be advancing in every area I can think of, it's just that the idiocy, waste and destruction is more easily available for anyone to see than it ever has been before. It's also more obvious because we're trying to move past it and pay more attention to it when it happens.

There is no new radical comedy nowadays like there was in the past, esspecially in the 80's in the UK such as spitting image. Now everything seems mainstream. Those pop musicians and comedians who used to be radicals are now mainstream. To me this seems to be a worrying lack of dynamism.

^^^ Yes. Ghost In The Shell is in a league of its own for mixing exciting scifi action with good sociology. .................................................. Cylon cultural victor! |
