That isn't a very good analogy.
EVE is unstructured play recess.
The teachers might not mind if you throw a ball at other kids, even when they don't want to play with you. It's still a bit of a jerk move.
Nonsense, you just misread the teachers and rules of the game. EVE is a gym with dodgeball in session. Collecting the balls = pve and necessary for pvp. throwing them at each other is pvp and getting hit is ship loss. Sitting out is lack of ship. It's just one set of arbitrary rules vs another.
Throwing the ball does not make you a jerk. Refusing to accept flying balls, aimed at you, as part of the game does.

Dodgeball anology isn't bad, but people laugh at 5 year old Billy all the time in Eve.
Nope, we have no five year olds in EVE. Not physically anyway if you mean to say that the people emoraging about ship loss are acting like five year olds, well then I agree. But they are likely adults. The demographics I recall place the average player in their twenties. This is why 19 yr old billy was the final example.
Originally by: Svarty II I wonder how willing CCP would be to compromise this old feature in order to gain subscribers.
I dearly hope not. Compromising this feature would make EVE just another crappy lets be friends session. I've played those, they last about a month for me.

It's an interesting topic especially relating to new players who do not yet fully comprehend the risk. Here's a story though about the opisite effect it can have:
TL:DR - Being torn apart by 2 cruiser size hulls in my BS carebearing and being ransomed for about all the isk I had made me decide to PvP and not waste another SP on PVE again and was the most awsome thing I'd ever experienced in a game.
I'd played eve back near the start of 2007 with a RL friend basicly doing some mining and just having some fun together, he quit after a few months and I soon did as well (playing another MMO at the time and only really been carebearing which was fun to do together as I didn't see him very often but not so entertaining alone)
I came back somewhere around September last year when I learned another friend of mine had started playing and I joined the corp he was in that centered around Missions and infrequent WH ops. I decided to go into a WH myself one day with my Hyperion not really well aware of the risks to see how it would hold up against the Sleepers, having just cleared out a site of a lower end WH a Pilgrim and an Arazu I believe it was decloacked on me and started to go to work on me. I did what I could trying to take out their drones (even had a cap booster fitted so could last a little) but once the cap boosters ran out it was pretty much over, they ransomed the ship for most of the money I had and actually let me go which I gues gave me a little better impression than some might if they got killed/podded after ransom.
That was the single most adrenaline filled awsome experience I had ever had in a game before, still a bit shaken exiting the WH I shortly after that loaded up some frigs + fittings into an Itty and headed to Amamake burning through them dmn fast but learning all the while and having a blast, scoring nice kills now and then. Joined RvB after that for a few months and now taking a look at the Militia.
Would like to thank those 2 people for that, really opened my eyes to what EVE was all about and haven't turned around since. It isn't all negative

No, you are not too soft, but you need to learn to live with these players and to lead them. They only destroy everything because no one leads them. --

Originally by: Aerilis What I'm trying to say is look past the game mechanics, the you consent to PvP when you undock, you're not safe anywhere, etc, mentality.
When you gank a two week old player in his first battlecruiser, you are causing him, another human being, a great amount of discomfort and distress. And you, another human being, are ENJOYING this. This idea just feels very wrong to me.
yes. i dont make excuses, i just wanna watch the world BURNNNNN

I've lol-cried over exactly one loss: failing to significantly damp a carrier and being chased down by fighters, I pick the wrong gtfo-bookmark and end up at a station instead of at the POSā with the global flagging that I had already forgottenā landing well within range of the sentries, and with only 10% armour repped back and 75% hull remainingā

Oh well, it was only a Lachesis, and it was bound by design to explode unexpectedly sooner or later. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Bolded the error. It is a GAME. People do take all of this far too seriously.
