Two words : Buyer Beware.
It takes two people for the scam to be successful the scammer and the dupe. I have never been scammed because I am careful, especially with the way some of the UI works.

Interesting article, though I'm surprised CCP haven't made it illegal to scam when selling characters for ISK.
That type of scam does seem to blur the boundary between in-game/in-character and OOG/OOC scamming.

And yes, the good thing about scammers sergeant, same as with pirates, is it gives you somebody to kill and feel good about killing, all rolled into one.
except i should think scammers are easier to kill.
Im gonna set all scammers to -10 standing, just incase i see one out in the sticks.

Xetic Federation does not check history of all it's members, because that'd be extremely difficult. We value honesty, and honesty also include an honest will to change ways. The important thing is to adhere to our rules and remain loyal to the alliance after having joined.
My personal oppinion is that in order to truely change ones ways, one must be willing to admit one did wrong. Vegatas post was one telling the world not only how to scam, but more so how to be aware of scammers. That is nothing dishonest.

San.
Thank you for the information about Widescreen. Xetic's CEOs, and CEOs in all of EVE, benefit greatly from awareness of scammers. One of the easier ways to hide as a scammer is to seek the company of individuals with good reputation and high morals. Sadly, ones exposed the same company the scammer kept will be dirtied by his deeds.
Hopefully there are few good scammers in EVE, however, as a good scammer will not be caught nor suspected. CCP allow scamming and corp theft due to the game being of the nature it is. It is corporate espionage and sabotage. It is a dishonest way of waging war, but viable. Sadly the system does not protect individuals, nor does it limit griefing of the "innocent".
P.S. This is not to be seen as a defence of the act of scamming someone. This is also a post heavily ladened with personal oppinions. |

Scamming is the lowest "profession" you can have in an Online Game. It only works because of the anonymity you have in the community and is therefore nothing that a game producer like CCP should tolerate. It ruins the game experience of the scammed person and I am sure, that a lot of the victims have left the game after such an experience.
For me I can say, if I would know a person in Real Life, that I know to be a scammer in an online game, I would not trust this person in any way. It needs a special way of thinking to be a scammer and a person with such an misfeature will have it in Real Life too.
Greetings Rangar
P.S.: English is not my first language.

I think that's plain wrong. Scamming only works because of the lack of attention of the one beeing scammed. Either that or the scam has been set up very good.
Successful scams also bases on a degree of greed on both sides. The Scammer greeds for money, while the one scammed can't wait to get that item/slot/whatever.
It's common knowledge that many people sell lab slots they don't own. It's also common knowledge that many people don't have the patience to wait for one freeing up or to get to know the seller or ask for proper collaterals. Taking a look on those Scammerlist mentioned here shows that pretty clear if you read the description and chat logs. Each and every of those scams would've failed if the people beeing scammed would've had a little bit of patience, which I honestly admit is limited.
[sarcasm]And in a twisted point of view one could claim any producer/Trader as a scammer as they most likely are making profit of others and not selling the items to production costs. [/sarcasm]

it was a very nice read, i'd like some zeepo input tbh :D
althought scamming is an unsavoury profession, it requires more "real" skill than mining and npcing ever could. it's not an "honourable" profession, but who cares - it's only a game. being a pirate in game doesn't make me an axe murderer in real life, i think some of you crok suckers should realise this. ----- ----- -----

About the article: Interesting.. thats it. I'm not fond of writings trying to setup scamming as a normal everyday profession.
About the circumstances: This game is PvP. While non-consentual fighting and scamming are allowed, they are still considered a form of griefing.
Allowed, but not respected or liked. Noone cares how you justify it. CCP doesn't seems to care, and i can live with that, but i don't wanna hear excuses about how 'you are not that bad of a person by scamming or pirating'.
In fact, YOU definitely ARE a BAD PERSON if you scam or pirate. Question is: can you live with that?
From how i see this, you cant... otherwise, you wouldn't care to justify your actions. Too bad for you, maybe one day you'll realize, that no matter how virtual this is, you are screwing up real people, and screwing up real people in the real world is a crime..
The day is close, when there will not be any more anonymous access on the net. When your real face will HAVE TO stand behind your actions. Will you scam then?
I don't think so. Enjoy anonymity, while you can.
Note to CCP: I think this thread should have been locked after the initial post, as its nothing but flames in a room full of oil cans.
ps.
Quote:
And I'm taking it the scammed ones are the 'retarded kids' and their ISK is the 'ice cream'
So you are basically the 'retarded older kid', who takes the cookie / ice cream of the 'retarded younger kid'. I hope the adults (CCP) put an end to this soon.
