Mining Need a good enhancement in this game to be more interesting an to make afk mining less efficient.
A/ The Strip Miners and Mining Lasers Break the rock but do not harvest it. When you Mine you choose an asteroid, you scan it and put on your group of mining laser (you can mine only one asteroid at a time). The While the mining laser break the rock, his density change. With your scanner you can see the best frequency for your lasers to break the rock. So you there is a panel command that you can use to regulate the power and the frequency of the mining laser to be more efficient.
If you do not scan the asteroid, you can use crystals with an average frequency but it will be less efficient (20% )
B/ Tractors Beam and drones put the beaked rocks in the barge. Special Tractor Beams can take the rock into the ship. Recuperating Drones can also do it.
So a barge should at least have two high slots and 25m3 of drone cargohold. It would be possible to install one missile launcher on a mining barge.
Example: Barge NŠ1: 2 High Slots (1Strip_Miner+1Mining_Laser / 1Strip_Miner+1Tractor Beam / 1Stripper+1 Standard Missile_Launcher) 1 Med Slot (shield or survey scan) 2 Low slots (Cargohold, Mining Upgrade, Shield,,,) 5 Light drones → Laser Mining Drones, Recuperating Drones or Light Scout
Barge NŠ2: 3 High Slots (2Strip_Miners+1Tractor Beam / 2Strip Miners+1Standard Missile Launcher / 2Strip Miners + 1Mining_laser / 2Strip Miners+1Small_Turret) 2 Med Slots 3 Low Slots 50m3 of Drones Cargohold
Barge NŠ3 4 High Slots (3Strip_Miners+1Tractor_Beam/ 2Strip_Miners+1Standard_Missile_Launcher+1Small_Turret, etc) 3 Med Slots 4 LowSlots 75m3 of Drones Cargohold

i find this overcomplicated
I suggest the following
scan the asteroids for the 'actual ore concentration' - some have 5%, some have 20%, some are rich and give a lot more.
Quality asteroids are hidden in exploration, as they drift across galaxy, probe them out and organize a mining op.
Asteroid belts should be planet wide, forming circles or elliptic lines around the centre of the solar system.
Asteroids move around system, they shift their positions overtime, so you need to find them again after several days.
Plain drilling the asteroids should be ineffective, some effort must be put in finding the right ones.
Jet can mining and having an industrial pilot is just lame, so introduce way of preparing the ore onboard a barge - so to avoid jet cans and small cargo holds.

Edited by: Agent 42 on 24/06/2010 15:51:16 One possible solution is to use pop ups that ask you to type a random sequence of letters/numbers that are distorted. The prompt pops up at different intervals of time so you might get one ten minutes after the last one then the next one might only come 40 minutes after the last one etc. You don't stop mining when the prompt comes up but maybe you automatically take a 50% yield hit until you type the correct characters.
If I was a miner I would want the prompts to be discrete, maybe have them pop up just over the hub.
Give the miner a free cycle of ore if they successfully type the code within ten seconds or something to offset the penalties/irritation.
I guess this would hurt afk miners too but **** 'em, it would only mean ore would become more valuable for players wanting to actually play the game.

In game captchas?

If you want to get rid of Macro Miners all you have to do is make astroids targetable only by double clicking on a asteroid scanner pop up. Make the scanner pop up appear in a different location on the screen every time ur run it. You cant macro that.

You can if you have a webcam.

Captchas would mostly remove macroers until they adapt (handwriting recognition software is pretty advanced these days). In the mean time, it'd be super annoying to miners. So much so that I'd feel justified inflicting it upon all players instead of just miners, just to demonstrate the annoyance.
Weird scanner games would also be annoying to miners. Let's not forget that mining is best performed via multiboxing, it's the only way to gather the bulk that the galaxy consumes.
You need to find a way that makes it not worthwhile to macro, but doesn't affect any other styles of legitimate gameplay.

CCP adds catch phrases to mining, and I would quit. That is simply not something that belongs in a game.
They need to add a new module, a pinpoint miner. Once equipped on a barge, you activate it and get a map of the asteroid (similar to the PI map when finding resources), and the pinpoint miner gets to work there, and gets those materials directly (trit, mex, etc). You mine the veins of the asteroid, so no need to refine it. Just pure veins. Unless you put your pinpoint miners in the wrong place of the asteroid, then you get nothing. You have to keep moving around, as veins will run dry.
The upside is that you get a much greater yields, but have to select where to mine. The best veins may be harder to find. You may need some scanning skills, like planet scanning skills. The yield should be 2-3 times more than if you mine normally.
That's my take on it. But make it active, not the boredom that it is now.

The idea is also to make the game more interestening. Mining is really boring nowadays...

+1 to Op's suggestion
It does take care of all the issues raised by the other replies. Macro "safe", interesting, more active.
