I sooooo agree with OP.
I mean, this has been going on all my life. When I was born and just a baby it was unfair because there were older people and they could talk and walk. WTF? I couldn't do that. There should be a button in this game and life that just gives me everything I want now now now now.
I'm too used to every other MMO that spoon feeds me and guides me every step of the way. I love having no choices and being exactly the same as everyone else! sandbox game where I can do anything I want? That's ridiculous, there is nothing to do in this game (I.e. No one telling me where to go, when, and with a neat glowing arrow on my mini-map that allows me to auto travel so I don't have to waste my time traveling. ) what's up with that?
I want want want now now now!!!!! Cry cry cry cry
OP needs to go to hello kitty online.
I'm new, in a 0.0 Corp and having a good time in my rifter killing and dying with less than 2 mil sp. The game is what YOU. Make of it. Stop crying and start killing!

Well Starcraft 2 should keep you busy for a couple months, then maybe Diablo 3 will be out soon after. Netflix can also get you hooked. Maybe after all that, a year will have passed and by then you really should be ready to at least completely masterfully fly any frigate class ship.

wow, i just spent 2 hours reading this thread, and laughed the whole way through!I am barely a year in game, and i live in a c4 wh, make approximately 100 mil an hour, manage my own large pos, and am training to fly supercaps! as i am a caldary pilot, i don't have the armor of a wet paper bag, but my 50 mil isk drake makes me a massive amount of isk, that i then turn around and spend on whatever i like! given the fact that i have been in cva, star fraction, as well as some noob corps, i think i did pretty well for a player who has never paid for my account at all! besides, eve is the only game you can set a 2 month skill running, take a 2 month break, and come back to find you now have that skill trained. i guess without the 2 years training to get this far i cheated? Edited by: Svarty II on 23/07/2010 01:00:27 There is a massive issue where noobs can't get into the nitty gritty of eve for a good 9 months. Sure, learning the gumph is important and can't all be done at once, but surely NINE months is too long?
Also, the more vertical advancement (e.g. Tech 3 stuff) they add, the more alienated new players become.

So, this is rather interesting.
When the game came out in 2005 you only had 50K sp to start out with. This would make flying a noob ship completely insane to fly(I am a 900k sp starting player)
You folks who complain that the game is too hard dont know what youre missin. Yes, it is time consuming to get "1337" status SP wise. But you can get into a paltry Ishkur that kicks butt(level IV+ support skills) in the course of 4 months. This should be ample time to be able to do LIII missions in the blasted thing. Not to mention PVP to boot. In the "lag" time to train a cruiser+ hull you can do some serious 0.0 ratting as well in this lowly Ishkur.
After you start to get the first symptoms of boredom in the Ishkur you can train up to get its big-brother the Ishtar. Of which is a mean PVP and PVE boat. This will take you another 4 months. so 7 months into the game you have a mean PVE/PVP character that can do LIV's, train for another month; a mean plexing boat, and can PVP with the best of them.
When this is all said and done, start to train for caps; cross train another race; hop into another ship class; start the minning tree; etc.. The possibilities are endless basically.
So stop your complaining and get to training. Have patience and the hour-glass will reward you with golden sand at the end.

I really don't get the OP or any whiners like him either.
I've been playing Eve since march, and I'm having a ball, sure I'm aching to get my hand on my next toys ( still debating between hulk and cov-ops ), but in the mean time, I make do with what I have.
The only moment I felt a bit 'cheated' and annoyed at having to train while not being able to do much was in my first month, when I trained up my learning skills ( which for any player that really wants to play this game a 'must have' ). I still need to finish 12 days on getting 3 of the x1 skills to 5.. at any rate, other than that, I have had plenty of fun. as for making oodles of money, I'm making 25M a day with PI, which takes me all of 30 minutes in all, including hauling from null sec.
and the rest of the time, I'm enjoying myself doing whatever I feel like doing at that moment, running missions, mining, exploring, what have you.

2 years to make more than a million an hour? Wow you really are fail. I was making more than that after about a week doing L2 missions and a little mining. It took me like 2 weeks to get into a cruiser and then another week or so to skill up and earn the isk to get into a BC. Right around a month or so in I joined RVB for a couple weeks got a little PVP on then when I ran out of isk I went and started running missions I then started running level3 missions and grinding faction to get L4 missions, a couple weeks of that and I got access to L4 missions running them with some buddies. When I started I decided I needed something beefier than a BC and trained BS 3 and got in a Domi, I was flying that domi with dual Medium reppers and kiting with Medium arty because I didn't have the skills for large reppers or hybrids.
I spent a few months from there missioning earning isk upgrading my skills and ships about 3 months ago I joined up with RVB and have been PVPing pretty much constantly since.
I've ignored any number of other things to do due to time constraints not lack of skills. At this point my character is about 11 months old I have the skills to fit every module but interdiction sphrere launchers, weapons and capital modules at T2. I can flying Gallante up to BS and Amarr and Minmatar frigs. I'm a fair PVPer and I'm learning to FC.
All this and I'm not even halfway to your 2 year mark. Not once have I felt like I've had nothing I could do. Sure there are any number of ships I can't use including every T2 ship in the game (which I'll be fixing soon now that my support skills are done and I've switched to a per/will neural map).
I can armor tank well or shield tank I can RR I can neut I've got fair drone skills, I can scan I can salvage I can hack and break codes I'm not the best at any of that but I can do it if pressed. I fly 3 races frigates and will soon add their cruisers and BC's. the next few months I'll be working up my weapon and ship skills, But it's not like I'm going to be sitting around spinning in station waiting for it.
I'll continue to PVP in RVB until I get bored then I'll either head off to FW, Null sec or WH space to find something else to do. I've to the min qualifications that most nul sec corps are looking for, Full T2 fit BC.
And I took the long route by not specializing. I could have had access to more ships and better offensive skills or better scanning and WHing skills or any specialization much sooner but I wanted to this to be a flexible character.
By the time I hit your 2 year mark I'll be able to fly all Gallente, Amarr and Minmater T1 sub capitals with full T2 load outs and most of their T2 stuff (don't plan on doing marauders or Black Ops for a while, and most likely won't be training interdictors either)
The trick to EVE IMO is to concentrate on doing what you can do now flying what you can now and have fun now. It doesn't take all that long to train a full T2 fit frigate and one can have a whole hell of a lot of fun with a Rifter.
You don't have to have T2 everything to run missions you don't have to have all 5s to wormhole.
Remember you get 80% of the maximum effectiveness of a skill at L4 you get that 80% for like 20% of the train time. The only skills you really want to train to 5 until you have nothing else to do are those that unlock some new item or skill that you want to have because otherwise there are several other skills you could take to 4 that would give you more capability.
But the most important thing is to not wait for skills to train. Find something else that you can already do that sounds like fun and do it. Remember time flies when you're having fun, well so does you skill queue.
And don't let SP levels discourage you. I've beaten people with more SP and I've lost to ones with less.
MMO's are long term time investments and as such the journey should be your focus, EVE does this better than most in that you really can start doing things from day 1

I started EvE as my escape from school related stress. I could turn to my fantasy world of space ships when I had the time, and focus of school work when I needed to. So far, the slow skill timer has been okay as I may or may not play, but my skills SLOWLY keep advancing.
I have 1 year of school left to complete a BSN. Lately (summertime break) I am realizing how freaking slow the skills progression really is. I can only guess what my impression will be when I am able to actually focus on the game ....
Kind of agree with the OP.

The problem for the OP and for new players in general is that Eve is seven years old now. Competing with established players is analogous to some brand new record distro trying to compete with Sony: it's just not going to happen.
The thing to do is to find ways of dominating other noobs. There are many, many ways to do this. There are also many ways to catch older characters slipping and make bank off of them.
OP is probably gone off to some other game with more instant reward. But what I'd suggest to new players is to specialize. By specializing in a given field it's possible to get as good as established players are, in other words to max out all relevant skills to your path.
Lots of people fly tech1 industrials. A 1 month old character can be an extreme threat to tech1 indies.
You can make massive sums on trade. You can make massive sums on Planetary Interaction and research. Inside of a month as stated earlier you can be soloing level4s and making, say, 10 million an hour pretty reliably, though level3s would probably be safer and more lucrative for a new player.
By finding as many income streams as possible and combining them you can make quite a sum. Still trying to figure out how to semi-passively earn cash, but for an active main it should be no problem and I don't see why people complain about this.
When you walk into a karate school for the first time do you expect to be able to go toe to toe with people who have been there for 7 years?

I've been 'persuaded' ( read bribed ), to go for the Stealth Bomber first by the CEO of our alliance. In about 25 days, i will be throwing torpedoes at people in my brand new shiny hound.
I've also had a look at a bunch of 'nice to have' skills.. and added those to my queue. in 2 months I'll be flying it really well, with all the support skills to do some serious buttkicking.. will probably lace those skills through my Hulk training which will happen after the SB.
Can't wait for the torps to start flying...

Not that I agree with the OP, but a 4 week old character hitting a billion requires a bit of trading know-how or a lot of time.
Assuming your brother was a newb without any assistance, i'm going to attribute his success to having no job and no social life.

Edited by: Covert Kitty on 16/08/2010 00:35:59 I made my first billion during my first month playing. I'm about 1.3 years old now. I shared the OP's thoughts when I was new, and nearly quit over it tbh. However it's mostly just in your head, the fact is that almost everything in the game can be done on low sp characters fairly well. Eve is not a min/max'er personality (me) friendly game on the skill side of things.
The fact is that the skill system is fairly flat, so if you want to be very good at something, just specialize and you'll get there fairly quickly, especially if you are interested in smaller ships, frigs, cruisers, etc. Guess what? most high sp pvp'ers fly small ships for a variety of reasons. It's easy for a new player to look at all the ships and think the "end game" is titans and super carriers... while the end game is whatever you want it to be, I for one have no interest in supercaps.
We have some new players in our alliance, just a few months old and they have their own large pos's in wh space mining and running c4 sites. The other day I had a need for an emergency scanning alt, so I spent like *2 hours* of training to make one, gave it a rigged t1 scanning ship, works just fine, can get in and out of highsec wormholes which is specifically what I needed it to do. Probably only takes a few days of training into a drake to be able to run C2 sites, nullsec ratting is even easier, but in the end your going to be more limited by your own knowledge of the game. Ninja salvaging apparently is pretty lucrative if done right as well. Seriously though, it would be pretty trivial to make a billion in your first week or two IF you had a good understanding of the game (new players don't, but I'm just trying to demonstrate that its knowledge of the game that is their primary limiting factor, and not sp).
I do think they need to ditch the learning skills though, very discouraging to new players, no gameplay benefit, can be replaced with an expansion to the implant system.
You know, some day I might have to make a new character not give it anything, and just play for a month or so to kinda re-understand it from a noob perspective, might be interesting.
