How much would you pay?
I would probably pay up to $100 (real dollars, not plex) for the opprotunity for a one time name adjustment for my main character... wondering if others feel similar.
This is what I would propose for CCP to consider as it could possibly make them a *whole lot of cash* if others feel the same as I do.
They offer a 1 time offer for a name change for the fee of $100 (or maybe $50 to be more conservative). Offered for a limited time on a special week ('name adjust week' or something') as a one time event. Each account has the one-time opprotunity to rename one and only one existing character on that account. Once the name has been changed there are no takebacks and no other opprotunity for rename any other characters on the account at any time.
To keep confusion at a minimal, an automated email would be sent to anyone that had that character listed in their contacts to inform them of the name change. A blurb on their Bio would automatically list former *aliases* for everyone to see.
Theoretically, if enough subscribers take advantage, it would make both sides happy. Subscribers get to finally fix that nagging poor name on their main character (the old name driving them crazy). And if, for example, 50% of subscribers take advantage of the offer, then that would be 175k subscribers paying $100 each to generate a whomping $15million dollars of extra income to CCP.
It could also be done once per year to give all new players the opprotunity to do it once (old players would not have a repeat opprotunity). CCP please consider it. |

If you choose a name you like there's no reason to change it.
Plus I would not buy a character from the bazaar as I prefer to develop them myself.
However for people buying a character from the Bazaar I think that they should be able to change the name as long as the original name is somewhere to be seen albeit not on the main character page. |

This.
Otherwise you should never be allowed to have a name change to cover some massive alliance heist. Or if you just happened to acquire the reputation of a massive tool. You are your name. |

On one side, both parties would benefit from a one time or reoccurring name change as a) the company (CCP) benefits from another source of revenue and b) player named xXxC00lkidxXx finally gets to change his name to something more.... normal. For this reason, I support the idea as I have played several MMO's in my career where such name change's have brought great satisfaction to both the player base and the host company.
On the contrary, I myself am strongly against turning Eve into yet another game where actions have no future implications or consequences. This would be yet another step into dumbing down the game to the point where, as long as you have money, you can achieve/do anything. Furthermore, current players with a history of scamming / griefing / corp thefts etc. would be almost untraceable due to name changes unless some sort of menu would be listed next to the Bio, Description, Notes that clearly states the players previous alias'.
Personally, I would not pay for this service as I have no problem with any of my characters names however, I would be prepared to pay something along the lines of 2x PLEX or -ú20 if I had the need and such service existed. |

That was the proposal that the old name remains on the character sheet just not on the from page because I'm sure a new owner would not want to see the old one everytime they open the character sheet.
At the time of change it could be recorded in the employment history, a line such as - Formerly known as 'Blah Blah' for example. |

If you read carefully, you will see that it is only available for a one time offer for one account. You would never see a character with multiple aliasis. Just a one time name change. |

It's actually easy to change your name in RL (might depend on the country of course) all you do is sign one legal document and then notify companies you deal with and government agencies that need to be informed. Plus of course you have to send the document as proof although sometimes companies will except a photocopy.
I don't see any real problem in EvE although it might make some more paranoid. Maybe some customers for the resident space therapist.

Your character name is an alias under which you can find players easily if you remember their name. As far as I know, there is no other way to find a character and it's too late to assign ID's or whatnot to characters. |

Agreed on the sculpting, god knows some need it :)
But on traceability, like I posted above, anyone can just swap out toons so why bother, there is no trace now and the whole idea that people cannot escape a bad rep is plain false.

Back on topic; I'm ambivalent about this - sometimes I think it'd be handy if you were allowed a once in a lifetime change, it's not that unheard of after all, you can do it in WOW for a fee if you race change.
That said, I think for the players that count we'd lose the entire bottom and top ends of the alphabet.
Because we're a single shard and as people have said, your name is your bond - I can think of more reasons to not have this, then to have this.
And trust me, I've wanted to change this name more than once - put it down to me being drunk in 2004 and thinking I'd like to check out this game that PC Gamer keeps harping on about.

Nope.
1. It starts with a trial account to try out the game and just making somethng up really quick to test the game out.
2. 3 weeks later you decide to subscribe... your kindof ok with the name, but its not one you would have chosen if you knew you were going to subscribe long term, but you just got Caldari Frigate V, can finally fly that Manticore, and don't want to have to repeat the last month of training...
3. ... 6 months later that name is still bothering you... more than you realized it would...now kindof nagging on you, and you wish that you could change it, but the thought of having to reskill now the last 6 months over again, going back to noob ships, and loosing 6 months of time would kill your game enjoyment as it would feel like you just wasted the last 6 months ('no cap skills again, can't fit anything again, no decent damage again), so its a nagging detraction from game enjoyment.
Thus your stuck... there's a nagging/persistent detraction from you game enjoyment that you just can't fix... sucks. A one time correction and walla, nagging destraction from 100% enjoyment gone.
The reason this keeps coming up is that a lot of players want it and would pay for it. Like said before, Eve is a sandbox and this is something that is done in RL (where your name is REALLY your bond) even more easily and often. Heck 90% of women that gets married have quick name changes... you can't tell me that RL is less important that Eve? Most Trolls make too much of a big deal about this and keeps others from fully enjoying the game... and CCP from making more money. |

If I make a mistake with a character and it niggles me at some point I'll just stop delete it after posting it's assets to the next character. Things that niggle me are poor names and errors in the character itself. Sometimes you can get quite far into a game before you realise what it is you dislike about your character.
So yeah, I can understand the problem you have and others like you. It's also a pity you can't alter facial and body features as people make quite a few error in those areas. |

The name as your bond thing has been dead in Eve the day that people could run simultaneous accounts, make alts (many of them griefer alts), and completely transfer characters from one account to another. Half of the names that I knew from 2003-2005 now belong to completely different people.
The whole concept of alts and spys, alone, all make the "name is your bond" claim inaccurate and hyperbolic.
I would probably take advantage of the offer myself if it presents itself.

stupid is as stupid does Solution:
Old name is still linked to the new name. If I change my name to Peabody Widdleshums, I should be able to type in "James Amril-Kesh", autolink it to character and it will pull up Peabody Widdleshums when I click on it, with a note somewhere on the character sheet stating formerly known as James Amril-Kesh.
And again, only allow one character name change per character. EVE's 4th of July Fireworks |

All the player whining won't make a difference- once CCP realizes that they can successfully charge ($$?) in real currency for a name change with enough "controls" so appearances are maintained, you can be they will.
Take our favorite other mmo to reference- they charge $25 to rename a character. The old name goes into reserve for I think 90 days, then someone else can get it. That delay prevents insta-swapping of identities, or so they claimed.
I think I read that they claimed the average player had like 1.5 name changes a year- thats the company getting over 2 months gametime revenue for something entirely automated.
Sounds like a revenue source that CCP will try someday. GëívGëí Inferno: almost as fun as chewing used medical syringes. |

This has been discussed numerous times in Features & Ideas discussion. For years and years. All of the points in this thread have been made again and again, to no avail. Someone did claim that CCP's CEO or somesuch had passingly mentioned "looking into it" as any other modern game allows it, but my Google Fu isn't sufficient enough to confirm this.
I really hope the name change does come someday, and I don't mind heavy restrictions with a reasonable price. However as CCP simply has skirted around the issue for almost ten years, my belief in it actually happening isn't at an all time high.
And what I would be willing to pay for a one-time name change? About 15-25 euros sounds reasonable and I believe that is standard price in many other MMO's altough can't confirm this.
"Your name is your reputation" is what even CCP has said IIRC as an excuse not to implement name change, but your name is not your reputation in this game, and hasn't been ever since alts and character trading became widespread. People keep deluding themselves about it, just like they are against "NEX and pay to win" but are amazingly a-ok with PLEX used for everything from turning real money in to game currency to PLEX as currency for any kind of service CCP offers. |

Therefore, there is obiously a possibility for real problematic names, but i don't like such a service on a regular base. Names are unique identifiers. If you spoiled the reputation of your character, you should not be able to wash yourself clean from it by changing names like changing pants.
TL;DR:
It is your responsibility to pick a proper name in the beginning. Choose carefully.
have a look for natural sounding names, "google" them for problematic pasts or similar, and ask yourself "Do i want to be called that way 'for eternity'?"
And after that: Consider every action you plan to do - concerning your reputation.

I once made an alt with the name "Noah Ward". Thought it sounded cool an also was kinda punny, (No Award). Then one day when I googled his name to get to his KB stats I learned that "Noah Ward" was actually the name of guy that used to work on EVE for CCP. And no, name is not your reputation. You already can wash your sins away with buying a new character or simply using an alt to do your dirty deeds from the beginning. See my post above. |

well, at last *this* - i'm somehow sure - would be a qualifying reason for a name change by writing a petition.
Anyway - some names are quite common. And it could also be, that the Person joined CCP *after* you named your character (i don't know).

good argument. I might change my attitude to "one name change for much money - so you will just do it, if you really feel pain with your first choice."
Teinyhr wrote: And no, name is not your reputation. You already can wash your sins away with buying a new character or simply using an alt to do your dirty deeds from the beginning. See my post above.
I do not agree on that point. If you buy a character, you also buy the characters past = his/her reputation. If you create a new character, the character has no reputation so far. If you use alts, you have - different characters with different reputations. Other players do not know, that two characters have in real live the same person in behind. They just see your characters + their names. Therefore you could play two completely different characters ingame - that's okay. |

I don't know that this is entirely true. There are a lot of players who would pay cash for a resculpt, but CCP has stated they have no plans to do such a thing, so I wouldn't expect renames to be treated any different. Lots of pilots don't care about names or appearances. I'm guessing that LCO is quite happy, but vanity is a very large pool of money that can be tapped if a company is willing to do it. CCP has shown they have the ability to let people resculpt their characters, they simply refuse to offer it as a service. They can, and have, changed names, but they won't do that either (note: I'm not siding for or against that one, there are a lot of valid points in this thread).
The question I would have to ask is why CCP chooses to ignore a large potential income with something that requires no additional coding for the game. Profit favors the prepared |

My trial character had a name that I came up with on the spot, a avatar which was rushed though decent and a mediocre assortment of skills. My trial character didn't have a bad name as much as one "borrowed" from a couple of novels since I needed a name on the spot. Once I decided on subscribing for a year I decided to create this more permanent character that I could claim wasn't lifted from any one source. While I wasted a few weeks in my test character, I ended up with a character that I will be happy with for years to come.
I suggest new players who plan on staying consider creating a "permanent" keeper character as well while you are in your first week or two, otherwise it gets really hard to start over once you invest more time in your character.
As for those characters that are a few years old I think the name change option could potentially be another source for revenue for CCP. It looks as though those that want to change their name are willing to spend a very large amount of real world currency to do so and I don't think the number of people would change much by lowering the prices for this service. It is true that other games do charge a good amount of cash to transfer characters between servers or change names. |

Precisely the point. In a game in which 50% of characters seen are an alts of an unknown main, "name and reputation" in actuality mean very little. Every alliance is full of spies. Hi sec PvP corps full of griefer alts from players which one will never know their main. The core mechanics of the game insure that character deception is built into the game. Name means zilch 99.9% of the time.
Those that would try to change there name for "deception" would be seen in the "Alias" option. (Could also appear in the character search as well).
The most notorious folks have their alts known already even today. Not a valid argument against the option. |

Well both sides are right at some points but it should be reasonable that you can change your name if:
-you buy character from bazar -if you are an older player, and there was only one colum for name in that time. Now we have two colums (name surname).
So i propose: you can change your name ONE TIME ONLY. and thats it. GÇ£If reality can destroy the dream, why shouldn't the dream destroy reality?GÇ¥ |

I posted my own idea with regards to this. I think it's very workable.
Hrothgar Nilsson wrote:- Allow characters to be renamed for a fee equal to:
----a month's subscription ----a PLEX ----an amount of ISK equal to the average PLEX price as traded on the market in the previous week/month (ISK sink)
- In the character info window, have a tab called 'Previous Names' or 'Name History' if the character's name been changed.
- Character who underwent a change in name would remain on contact lists.
- People would receive a notification if someone on their contact list changed their name.
- Character names could not be used again if they are a previous name of a currently existing character.
The 'Previous Names' or 'Name History' tab would be almost identical to employment history, but instead listing a character's previous names with the date range which they had that name (e.g. Sven Svensson 2004.12.15 to 2012.06.18).

This is true. Some of us never had the opprotunity for a two-word name. Would have taken advantage if it was available back then. At least a one time offer for old vets would be fair IMHO.
