Originally by: Gideon I remember the days of the Mara/Passari gate camp and there were no sentry guns at release. I only did a couple hours at a time because it was boring but the rest of those guys loved sitting there hour after hour wasting ships and pods while chatting away in teamspeak. One of the reasons I think podding happened was to keep any sizable force of cruiser skilled pilots from attacking.
I do remember talk of a player corp offering stabbers in exchange for safe passage and cruisers were the top ship at the time. I think most of m0o was already in cruisers bought from NPC corporations or it could of just been decked out frigates. Either way it wasnt long after that offer that most of m0o was using stabbers. I know nobody was in battleships when CCP sent in "The Four" to break up the gate camp.
I would love to know more about this. Of course, being a history buff, I'd love to see a compiled history of some of the more interesting events in the early days of Eve in and of itself.

Edited by: Galk on 01/07/2010 05:23:02 The Mara thing, basicaly two systems that were a choke point across the middle of the map, that about 90% of the traffic of eve passed through in the first months of the game.
Because of the loading system, and the ability to drop cargo cans (no timer) plus whatever else (mines ect) and the non penalized dmg mod stacks (stabber/heatsinks?), they could pretty much insta pop anything jumping in or warping to...before the targets client had loaded.
At the start, just frigates, crusiers, industrails, and starter ships.

Additionally since CCP's web team seems to consist of a single-celled organism, this main website hasn't been reviewed and updated in years, take a look at the expansion features lists:
http://www.eveonline.com/features/secondgenesis/
If you go through, there are plenty of features that aren't even in the game anymore of have since been hugely changed again, according to Genesis features:
ships and unlimited customization Ships and Unlimited Customization with 100 different player ships and over 3.800 different modules.
But I agree with the list of 61ish ships, so where the other 39 were I don't have a clue, seems they counted all the stuff that wasn't available, like Jovian and pirate vessels. --------------------------------------

Additionally you had:
1) Original Shuttles, Frigates, Cruisers, Industrials, and Battleships on Release 2) Castor Added the first Tech 2 ships to the game, being interceptors (8) 3) Exodus added Destroyers, Battlecruisers, the faction ships and the original 3 mining barges (the turning point of asteroid fields full of Apocs and Megathrons dying off) 4) Cold War added Dreadnoughts and Freighters 5) Red Moon Rising added the largest pool of new ships (39 brand new ships/tech 2 in total) - Carriers, Motherships & Titans - Interdictors, Combat/Force Recons, - [Fleet] Command Ships (8 of those) 6) Revelations added a second set of Battlecruisers and 1 additional Battleship for each race 7) It seems that Revelations II was the first expansion that did not include any new vessels. 8) Trinity also added no new ships, but did do a huge re-balancing for Amarr/Caldari ones. 9) Empyrean age appears to have added no new ships or re-balancing 10) Quantum Rise, Orca is added 11) Apocrypha, Tech 3 Cruisers
In general there's a lot missing from the above, I can't see directly when Jump Freighters, Rorqual, Pirate Vessels, Second Amarr Industrial, Transport ships, heavy interdictors etc were all added. --------------------------------------

Edited by: Othran on 01/07/2010 12:35:08 The amusing part about Mara-Passari was that it started out (AFAIK - stav or j0rt said this) as a way to prove to CCP how messed up the game was re stacking and a load of other stuff.
The can-spam stuff was pretty spurious really - hundreds of ships were getting popped and there was nothing on them except meta0/1 rubbish. Most cans were getting looted by fanbois rather than m0o so the quantity kept building up - as did the grid loading time
Oh yeah that reminds me - Sarum Prime used to be low-sec, TankCEO used to gank the newbs there. Map has changed a lot.

I can confirm. I was one of the first to own a Dominix (used to fight m0o in Syndicate), and I remember people clamoring for a cheap transport ship, later coming to be the shuttles. They were most definitely NOT in the game at the start.
People always forget to mention that when you jumped through a gate, you didn't come out at the opposing gate. You spanwed in one of a set of randomy picked positions. There was no burning back to the gate.
