Edited by: Spades Slick on 29/06/2010 15:50:40 Hey, just wondering how many ships there were in EVE at the beginning. I'm getting sick of seeing people beg for newer ships on top of the several dozen per race we have now when I have a feeling that people had to settle for maybe 15 ships per race or something like that, long long ago.

When I joined Eve back in 2003, there were not too many ships. There were a handful of T1 frigates for each race, about the same number we have now and maybe the industrials. Shuttles were not even on the market by this point. Neither were cruisers. -

IIRC, there were the 6 frigates, the noobships and shuttles, the 4 cruisers, 2 types of battleships and at least one industrial ship. That's at least 15 ships for each race for a total of 60. The real number is propably higher, so lets say 70. |

I might be wrong about the cruisers. But I do remember that shuttles and Battleships were not on the market at the start of Eve. -

Amarr had only 5 frigates and 1 indi but I'm pretty sure the other races had the amount you said.

Well in the "beginning", 1 rookie ship per player would be the answer I think. ;)

Edited by: Ris Dnalor on 30/06/2010 02:12:34 In the beginning all NPC stations had buy orders for minerals. at 1, 4, 16, 64, 256, 1024, 4096. ( morphite was not in game yet )
People began the game by mining, selling the minerals to NPC buy orders, and purchasing blueprints from which they could make ships.
I do not know about frigates & industrials, they may have been seeded on the markets in part or in whole... of this I am not sure. ( I sat in station for a month training learning skills, buying loot, recycling, and selling the minerals to build some cash until I got those learnings done, and when done I recall buying an industrial without any difficulty )
but cruisers and battleships did not appear on the scene until an enterprising corporation managed to save up enough isk for the bpo and put it into production. the first ruptures were very expensive iirc around 30m isk, though the price came down quickly enough.
- The Amarr only recently added the Magnate to it's frigate fleet, it was definately not around in the beginning.
- The Amarr only had 1 industrial ship for the longest time ... The bestower ( the sigil was added at a later date so the t2 amarr industrials could have different base hulls like the other 3 races )
- Tier 3 ( tech 1 ) battleships had not been introduced into the game.
- Destroyers and Battlecruisers had not been thought of yet, and were introduced into eve at a later date.
- As was mentioned in an above post, no shuttles.
of course you could fit a kestrel with cruise missile launchers if you liked, so there were certain advantages *grin*

I want to say that frigates and industrials were seeded at first. I didn't mine at all and went out ratting in my starter ship til I got enough money to buy a Vigil and then a Rifter. I don't recall anyone having enough money to buy the BPOs at that time. Battleships and shuttles were added in shortly after.
I could very well be wrong though, that was a long time ago now

I remember that industrials were a very rare commodity and highly valued for their specialised role
Titans were always in the game from the start but of course not seeded. Not even fully functional I bet.
P sure battleships were seeded right from the start but it took quite some time for anyone to be able to afford the blueprints.
Basically it was frigs, cruisers, indys and battleships.

the battleship blueprints and cruiser blueprints were seeded right from the start, yes. not the ships though. and saying titans were "in the game" is a bit of a stretch. There were lots of things coded into the game, including Jovian, and even Terran weapons (Yes Terran... That eve gate might not stay closed forever, you know...), which could be seen when CCP would share raw data dumps of all the items in eve... however those things were never something that a player would ever have access to regardless of how wealthy they became.... though they were the toys of the devs at that time... but as you say it's been a long time...

Titans were only really introduced as a ship that could be flown by a pod pilot in late 2004 if i remember correctly, and prior to that point, only known in the eve chronicles and that was pretty much it really.
Techell was the first player corp that actually sold battleships once they had the BPO,and the most common ones back then were the armageddon and the apocalypse battleships, mainly because they were extensively used in 0.0 space as they didn't need ammo like the other battleships did,and there were no outposts back then to resupply, only NPC stations, and even those were rare,as it depended on the region the pilot was in.
Fountain had a lot of them, stain has a lot of them too, while the other regions had much less by comparison.

I was also surprised to see that Dreadnaughts were the first capital ship introduced, and at that time the only one. Did you light cynos for that single ship type only?

Carriers and motherships and dreads were all introduced at the same time as the titans in late 2004 actually.

No they weren't. The battleship BPOs existed in the database but they weren't seeded to the market until sometime in June/early July 2003. Cruisers were the biggest combat ships available at release, although it took a corp-wide effort to be able to afford the BPOs.

Very interesting topic we have here. History is always interesting.
How was the nullsec, lowsec or hisec space in the very beginning? Was there some corps or even alliances who run to the wilderness right at the start? Was there pirates camping the gates?
I started my EVE career much much later in 2005-2006 but i remember newbies had only something like 30k sp at the start, or was it 80k? Took almost a month to get skills for a cruiser. Man, it took time to get even a frigate :) |

Some of the beta PVP players headed out to 0.0 immediately - mainly to get the npc drops to fit their ships. There wasn't a lot of point in going to 0.0 if you weren't ratting as initially all the ore was available in Empire (used to mine Ark in Jel). Around the end of May 2003 CCP moved all the rare ores to 0.0 and people followed. Things have changed an awful lot since then - heh Stain used to be the richest area for a while. Most of the far south hadn't been made available (like Jove space is now)
Probably the best known "pirate" corp was m0o - they kept the Mara-Passari gate camped for weeks - literally. Stacked damage mods with no nerf and no tracking on guns meant things were pretty lethal back then. There were no gate guns, no instadeath from Concorde (don't think it existed, if it did nobody took any notice). Good times
Edit - oh and no clones at all. That wasn't so great

There were no gate guns or station guns. In fact you used to get npc rats on high-sec gates which was pretty amusing until you realised they could kill your little frigate

I remember the days of the Mara/Passari gate camp and there were no sentry guns at release. I only did a couple hours at a time because it was boring but the rest of those guys loved sitting there hour after hour wasting ships and pods while chatting away in teamspeak. One of the reasons I think podding happened was to keep any sizable force of cruiser skilled pilots from attacking.
I do remember talk of a player corp offering stabbers in exchange for safe passage and cruisers were the top ship at the time. I think most of m0o was already in cruisers bought from NPC corporations or it could of just been decked out frigates. Either way it wasnt long after that offer that most of m0o was using stabbers. I know nobody was in battleships when CCP sent in "The Four" to break up the gate camp.

Didn't j0rt get moved halfway across the universe in his Dominix? I know he was the first of m0o into one and there was pretty much nothing the GMs/Polaris could do to him other than move him. IIRC it took him two or three days to get back (everyone remember no WTZ so 15km slowboating on every gate).
I also remember someone selling "m0o avoidance kits" which consisted of stacked mwds and invulns Morkt Drakt or something like that - he was one of the market pioneers really, worth billions when most of us were scratching around for the next BS.

Because of the loading system, and the ability to drop cargo cans (no timer) plus whatever else (mines ect) and the non penalized dmg mod stacks (stabber/heatsinks?), they could pretty much insta pop anything jumping in or warping to...before the targets client had loaded.
At the start, just frigates, crusiers, industrails, and starter ships.

Additionally since CCP's web team seems to consist of a single-celled organism, this main website hasn't been reviewed and updated in years, take a look at the expansion features lists:
http://www.eveonline.com/features/secondgenesis/
If you go through, there are plenty of features that aren't even in the game anymore of have since been hugely changed again, according to Genesis features:
ships and unlimited customization Ships and Unlimited Customization with 100 different player ships and over 3.800 different modules.
But I agree with the list of 61ish ships, so where the other 39 were I don't have a clue, seems they counted all the stuff that wasn't available, like Jovian and pirate vessels. --------------------------------------

Additionally you had:
1) Original Shuttles, Frigates, Cruisers, Industrials, and Battleships on Release 2) Castor Added the first Tech 2 ships to the game, being interceptors (8) 3) Exodus added Destroyers, Battlecruisers, the faction ships and the original 3 mining barges (the turning point of asteroid fields full of Apocs and Megathrons dying off) 4) Cold War added Dreadnoughts and Freighters 5) Red Moon Rising added the largest pool of new ships (39 brand new ships/tech 2 in total) - Carriers, Motherships & Titans - Interdictors, Combat/Force Recons, - [Fleet] Command Ships (8 of those) 6) Revelations added a second set of Battlecruisers and 1 additional Battleship for each race 7) It seems that Revelations II was the first expansion that did not include any new vessels. 8) Trinity also added no new ships, but did do a huge re-balancing for Amarr/Caldari ones. 9) Empyrean age appears to have added no new ships or re-balancing 10) Quantum Rise, Orca is added 11) Apocrypha, Tech 3 Cruisers
In general there's a lot missing from the above, I can't see directly when Jump Freighters, Rorqual, Pirate Vessels, Second Amarr Industrial, Transport ships, heavy interdictors etc were all added. --------------------------------------

The can-spam stuff was pretty spurious really - hundreds of ships were getting popped and there was nothing on them except meta0/1 rubbish. Most cans were getting looted by fanbois rather than m0o so the quantity kept building up - as did the grid loading time
Oh yeah that reminds me - Sarum Prime used to be low-sec, TankCEO used to gank the newbs there. Map has changed a lot.

I can confirm. I was one of the first to own a Dominix (used to fight m0o in Syndicate), and I remember people clamoring for a cheap transport ship, later coming to be the shuttles. They were most definitely NOT in the game at the start.
People always forget to mention that when you jumped through a gate, you didn't come out at the opposing gate. You spanwed in one of a set of randomy picked positions. There was no burning back to the gate.
