2x 150mm Prototypes 2x Missile Launchers (currently Arbalests) w. Thermals (rocket launchers and defender for PvP (nasty Kestrels))
1x MWD 2x Cap Recharger (Webber and Sensor Dampener for PvP)
1x Overdrive Injector (or Cap Power Relay for PvP) 1x Gravimetric Backup Array or Warp Core stabilizer
This is normally pretty good (especially for PvE), and I can beat most frigs in PvP in it.
Use whatever ammo you like in the 150mms. I either use Tungsten or Uranium (depending on what I feel like). You don't need all the cap stuff if your skills can take it, but I really don't like my MWD to run out on me.

Originally by: Cloista Shadowblade Thats a purely PvE setup mate, I don't PvP much if at all, apart from defending my corp's miners from pirates on occasion, so can't really offer any advice there. Have used a very similar setup in a 1v1 frig duel though, and only lost because I forgot to carry FoFs and the sod target jammed me.
Yeah B***locks, you really talk crap, when you came into contact you ran and hid in a station, you would also ask the noobs who just joined your corp to fight you, so it made you look good, tho if you faught anyone else you would lose, that guy who got target jammed you was a noob, lol, you where never online not to mention protect ppl, besides you are even crap at NPC hunting, so what would you know about PvP, i pmsl at you cloista shadowblade.

Heres a merlin setup that I almost won an in-corp frigate tournament with.
Hi-Slots 2x 75mm gatling railguns 1x Named Small Energy Neutralizer 1x Named Small Nosferatu
Mid-slots 1x Sensor Booster 1x Remove sensor dampner 1x MWD
Low-slots 2x CPR
It holds up its cap much longer than normal frigs, and by the time you are way low, not only will you be in range of your prey, but it will be out of cap. Only FoF missiles were able to stop me, since this was before the MWD shield nerf was removed. ---

personally i like kessies firing cruise missiles =D
kessies = teh uber caldari frig
4x te-2100 std launchers - 1x cap recharger 2 1x mwd 1x ecm burst - 1x mirco power core 1x 200mm armor plates
or youc an drop the mwd and put on 400mm plates
works great when fighting multiple frigs
side note: and intie or AF will wtfpwnbbqfishsticks you if you try this on them =)
u can do similar setups with the merlin naturally replacing 2 launchers with turrets (name scout guns)

As an Merlin pilot, I have to ask... How "usable" are these setups after all the patches?
Also, I haven't seen a specific EW-setup. Is that because a Merlin isn't good at it?

wel the setup I use on the merlin for lvl 2 missions is:
150mm Compresed Coil gun x2 (Lead S) Limo upgraded standard missile launcher x2
AB T2 Small shield booster Magnatic Shield amp (EM 32.5%)
Power Diagnostic Gyro stab.
With the leads and no real skills the guns allow you to fight at 20/22km. Most rats in lvl 2 don't have the reach for that. Only failed two missions in total and that was when I started using this setup. Even without the named stuff you sould be able to do the lvl2 mission with just the T1 moduals.

For PvP work, I'd fly the following:
High Slots: 125mm Railgun I (AM) 125mm Railgun I (AM) Rocket Launcher I (EM) Rocket Launcher I (EM)
Mid Slots: 1mn MicroWarpDrive I Stasis Webifier I Warp Disruptor I
Low Slots: Capacitor Power Relay I Nanofiber Internal Structure I
With skills, a 125mm rail with AM is going to have the same range as a rocket, so there's no reason to pass up the higher DPS by going with standard missiles instead.
For PvE, I'd do this: High Slots: 150mm Railgun I (Iridium) 150mm Railgun I (Iridium) Standard Missile Launcher I (EM) Standard Missile Launcher I (EM)
Mid Slots: 1mn Afterburner II Stasis Webifier I Small Shield Booster II
Low Slots: Reactor Control Unit I / MAPC Nanofiber Internal Structure I
Since you typically fight at longer range in PvE, you're going to take more damage, so you have to use a shield booster. You might have trouble fitting this setup because of power issues, though.
However, when you talk about flying a Merlin, IMHO you have to justify why you're not flying a Kestrel. In PvP setups, a Kestrel is almost always better, and in PvE setups a Kestrel is often better. The Kestrel has a little less CPU and grid, but a vastly mix between turrets and launchers in its high slots.

This is my setup, i dont post often and so might face critism but this is what i use for ratting and sometimes for PvP, but only with other ships helping
Hi-slots 2x T2 150mm railguns (antimatter) 11km range 1x Standerd launcher 9(bloodclaw for PvE or defenders for PvP)
Mid-slots 1x T2 small shield booster 1x AB 1x warp disrupter
Low-slots 2x PDU's
Try it out, works well if you have good skills in cap. Cap does tend to run low if shield is kept on.

unfit the disruptor for PvE and fit a passive hardener for the main damage type of the rats
u should easily be able to fit 2 launchers with good skills

Rest are OK but with that config of yours, I rather go for 2x Caps or 1 cap and 1 small armour rep. because you really have cap. deficiency in your setup at the moment. ----------------

Originally by: Davison Maze Maybe if I replaced them with rockets, but then the damage is still reduced.
LIES! LIES! Train those rocket and missile skills and you will end up doing more dps in the long run man

Here's a fantastic PvE setup, great for L2 missions and ratting as low as 0.3 if you have the skills to fit it:
High : 2 x Light Ion Blaster, 2 x Rocket Launcher Mids : AB, Medium (yes, medium) Shield Extender, Shield Recharger, Kinetic Resist Amp Lows : Micro Aux Power Core, Power Diagnostic (or another MAPC if you need the power)
Orbit at 4000m and rip em up! No shield booster needed, I tank multiple cruisers and rarely drop below half shields.

Edited by: Cade Morrigan on 26/12/2005 02:40:38 I typically use Tungsten in the ion blasters (gives me 2500m optimal) and Kinetic and Thermal in the launchers. I'll use iridium in the blasters, but nothing shorter ranged than that, my gunnery skills aren't that hot. I don't like iron because it does such plinky damage even though the range is the best.

how is it even possible for a merlin to have all that stuff? My merlin has 42 power with power diagnotics alone and 52 power with Micro Aux power core.
your setup for high = 22power your setup for medium = 40
around 62 power needed? how????

Edited by: MuffinsRevenger on 30/12/2005 14:44:03 i went trough the entire 2/10 gurinstas complex using a merlin by myself today, second time i do it in that ship, had no real trouble at all doing it
i used 2 named 125's (am and iridium depening on what i was fighting and how) 2 missile launchers (blodclawes) 1 small booster, 1 thermal passive hardner 1 kinetic passive hardner 1 named shield extender 2 hybrid damage mods
can kill most things there without a problem, the pithium silencers witch seem to have realy nice tracking keep hiting me eventhough i keep my transversal up, but they usualy die annyways
most of the stuff where things i happend to be having laying around, so using prototype rails and named missile launchers woud naturaly give you even more damage
