I've heard people say that the crystals in beam laser batteries don't modulate their range but it does change their damage. Anybody care to confirm/deny that? Also do beam laser batteries in fact consume faction crystals per shot like normal guns?

It does change range as far as I can tell (I just using MF anyway). Crystal damage always enabled for pos battery so even normal crystal is consumed (at about the same rate as a faction crystal).

Projectiles were tested. Range and tracking were not affected by ammo.

Oh, and keep in mind that tracking and distance is measured from the center of the control tower, NOT the gun.

Really? Then why does everybody set them up with the guns all spaced apart? Can someone please confirm/deny this?

Read the posts I indicated above, and the discussion that followed. In fact, read the WHOLE THREAD from message one. It is worthwhile.
Warp disruptors are an exception for range. 150 km from them (see post 177).
People place stuff far apart so that everything isn't within optimal of attackers so they have to move. Need to online a replacement battery? Online one on the opposite side of the bubble. Also so that they can't warp-in smartbomb ships and destroy everything at once.
