Originally by: Chribba Dying as in CCP shuts down the servers, will most likely be after they stopped adding/fixing anything, and the cost of running it is getting closer to the profit they make by just letting it run.
Besides that I don't really see any reason for it to be shut down. After all it's a business, and anyone would in most cases simply let stuff run as long as it generates money and kill it off when there is no profit.
I of course hope to see CCP add content and fixing bugs for many years to come, the worst ending in my book would actually be the above scenario. So I rather would want it to die from a volcano if so yes.
/c
Exactly what i was going to say fella. Claim on insurance and 3 month later eve is back up and as bad as ever *ahem* ;)

I despair at you people sometimes.
It's funny you say that weeks after the dev at the CSM summit told them that they are incapable of devoting more resources to any ongoing issues in the EVE client because they're all tied up in Incarna and DUST512.

Edited by: Vaal Erit on 08/07/2010 22:16:36 I don't think it will be from players upset over lag/whatever because players are already upset over lag and continue to play. I don't think it will be from competition because EVE has already withstood a lot of competition and EVE is such a niche game you won't see AAA companies competing. It is just very difficult to compete with EVE's 7 years of content, a new game would have to be insanely good to pull EVE players away and most new MMOs are rushed, have little content and are broken/lag infested. I don't think that EVE will explode because of the "GUI".
CCP has this attitude like "screw the players we will do what we want." I love that attitude but I think it is possible that one day CCP will release some terrible NGE-esque expansion and the players will bail en mass and EVE will never recover.
Also a likely scenario is that people will not play EVE anymore because the world starts dying from global warming/economy tanks/we all get covered in oil. - It's not "Play through a pre-set story, become stronger, do endgame". Gameplay is open ended, and you make your own story. Unless you're too afraid of 'pvp grief' to do anything relevant |

What is strangely ironic about CCP developing new software, is that I think, rather than developing DUST and all that jazz, they just get a team to start working on EVE 2.
If they were to rewrite eve online from the ground up. New engine, new graphics etc. Keeping 99% of the actual gameplay and improving upon it with new and better methods, it would make a **** tonne more money than DUST or anything else to be honest.
And I'm sure most of us would migrate to it, if it contained all of what we love about EVE as it is now.

Well.. Dust is just to tap into the console market.

I used to play an MMO called Mankind in the mid nineties. To this day it still exists because nobody has created a product that competes with it.
Even after Eve's graphics become decades outdated and CCP stops caring about it there will still be a group of people playing EVE. Just on far smaller servers. Other MMOs that shut down did so because they offered an inferior experience to WoW (or EVE) and as such there was no niche left for them to fill. I can't foresee an EVE-Killer within the next decade. There's just too much meat in this game.
Of course nothing is infinite. So I'm going to say that EVE will die when Iceland's government seizes CCPs assets to fund it's secret military bases. The remaining offshore portion of the company will merge with EA games for survival and EVE will alienate its user base within a month.

Make no mistake, some kids whining on a forum won't make a steady growing MMO die. In fact, these forums create an alternate reality outside of the game in which bugs go unfixed, expansions go rampant, etc. Right now I'm having too much fun handling these PI infrastructures. And my Primae of course.

Terrorists will set off a dirty bomb in London at the 2012 Olympics. This will be in proximity to the eve server, and due to radioactivity the server will be lost, and so Eve Dies. :(

Dieing as in "everyone stops playing" when everythings advanced so far that just patching on top of old code no longer cuts it and they need to make "eve 2"
Dieing as in "the original game no longer exists" new player content and nerfing things so that everythings "fair" --
Nothing is worthless, you may have gotten it for free but it still has an inherent value

Edited by: Psymn on 09/07/2010 12:02:02 Eve will die, in a good way when they hire david breben and make him quit his rollercoaster tycoon nonsense and start creating a galaxy where you can free fly with real physics, planets have orbital behaviour and gravity and can be directly landed upon (and crashed into), the ships are redesigned to reflect their capabilities rather than being pieces of art, and the economy is lifted wholesale from new eden and dropped into this new galaxy.
That would be an 'end' i could look forward to :)

Edited by: Rashmika Clavain on 09/07/2010 13:06:48 I believe EVE will die when the Sun finally expands into a Red Giant.
Although to be honest I expect CCP will just do a server room move to Alpha Centauri.
I'd expect Tuxford to leave the login server crap behind and things would go belly up.
Imagine the downtime for that eh?
EDIT: lol someone beat me to the Tuxford and Nova thing. Meh.
