In every war since the dawn of time, those armies who have the best minds and strategists have gone on to carve some of the greatest empires man has known. From ancient Greece to the Roman Empire, from Alexander the Great to Erwin Rommel, strategy and military theory has proven its place in the annals of time.
Sun Tzu once wrote, ôStrategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.ö Even in 500 B.C., military leaders understood the necessity of strategy and tactics are the very foundation of a successful skirmish and battle, and that in the end would lead them to victory in war.
I am, therefore, offering up to all militias and pirate corporations engaging in fleet operations a chance to learn combat theory. While I am a firm believer that theory is not the same as practice, what one knows and understands makes him much more competent in the face of battle and adversity.
I will work to create schedules for classes, as well as reading material for each session. I expect the sessions to be short û roughly thirty minutes to an hour. The purpose will be to give you greater knowledge in tactics so that you can maximize your killing efficiency in battle. ôKnow thyself, know thy enemy. A thousand battles, a thousand victories.ö û Sun Tzu
I will work to keep ôclass sizeö small, around twenty people. I will work to keep the classes evenly spaced, as well as an even amount of people from various factions.
I do not expect this to be an immediate thing. This may not happen for another month (I need to reinforce my own knowledge, after all, as well as draw up outlines and overviews).
For those of you with doubts, let me say that I am a former United States Marine Corps enlisted-to-officer (ranks held: Private First Class, Lance Corporal, Second Lieutenant, First Lieutenant). I have been inundated and fascinated with great historical battles and leaders since I was young. I consider history û and especially military history û to be my forte. Well, next to music theory and performance!
I am not promising this to be the greatest thing ever, and I am sure that there are plenty better to teach. But I havenÆt seen the offer on these forums, and I figure it should be something that is offered.
If interested, please send a mail to Aiden Vorlan. In it, please list your faction so I may plan the class rosters.
Thank you, and happy flying!

First: Cool story bro
Second: I would suspect that you're in for a learning experience primarily in the degree of difference between leading people in RL who are paid to follow you vs. Internet spaceship pilots. We're a motley, deranged crew like those of the Dirty Dozen except we'd all probably fit Archer Maggott's profile closest.
Third: As long as you're interested in tomes of ancient wisdom like AoW, here's gem from the bible: "...cast not thy pearls before swine." (Matthew 7:6)
Warmest welcome to the cynical eve forum community.

Ew, you quoted New Testament. Personally, I prefer the Old Testament God. You know, the one who's all "eye for an eye", "tooth for a tooth", and the one who'd slaughter entire villages because they'd look at the Jews wrong.
The New Testament God is far too PC. <.<

I think you should hit up EvE University, they might let you teach a class on strategy and psycology or what not. But like the other guy said, internet spaceship strategy is very different from real life strategy....I think you know why.

Tell me, is The Art of War simply about strategy and tactics in only military combat?

A merlin can flipped us today.
Thankfully, our elite security forces arrived in time to punish the offender. We brought a rail Eagle which successfully provided suppressing fire while a rifter and a thorax flanked the merlin from the other side of the asteroid belt. I am happy to report that the merlin was successfully destroyed with no casualties.
This concludes my action report for the engagement on July 10th, at around 12:00 PM EST.

Good luck with teaching those classes, bro.
First class will be about keeping your pod in place long enough for battlecruisers to lock it.

Actually, I was going to offer a class on how to properly camp the Tama gate in Nourv, but I don't want to step all over the Caldari militia's turf.

Whenever someone quotes Sun Tzu, I want to kick a cat in the head.
Please think of the cat.
Saying you have a background in the U.S military is like saying you breathe air. Frankly, I don't think your class has anything to offer but thousands of badly outdated quotes and plenty of OORAH.

If you try to teach AoW to EvE pilots, you will find that they will fail their first lesson, Discipline!
Sun Tzu would end up killing the entire class of concubines and then be laughed at by the King for the attempt.
If there was a way though to persuade PvP rabble to conform and obey instruction, you could rule all of nullsec.
Soon afterwards, EvE would cease to be fun, and we would all go find something else to do.

First of all; thank you for your service to our country (United States) Lieutenant. Its an honor to have some of the finest men and women in uniform in our armed services.
TBH, Eve is more like naval warfare in most ways than land-based warfare. But, I can see where strategy and tactics from different arenas can still apply. All the armies you mentioned often won battles, but they often lost battles as well. The most successful were the ones that were the most flexible at turning defeat into victory. And success meant having a strong civilian industrial core and enough resources to make victory possible. It has been said that armies travel on their stomachs. So you may have to be willing to teach leadership and strategy across a wide range. Niccolo Machiavelli's Art of War and The Prince may be more applicable here.

At first I was a little "lol", but then Aiden schooled everyone in this thread in the burn department.
I hope your class is a success Aiden, people could use a little thinking in strategy. I would encourage anyone who think Sun Tzu and the Art of War is played out to consider that Lord of the Rings is only cliche because of how monumental and applicable of a work it was, and saying "I don't like sound strategic advice, because everyone else already liked it before me" is stupid.
Protip 1: Warping at 0 to a guy in a belt and hitting F1 is tactics, crushing an inferior gang with F1 is also tactics.
Protip 2: Creating an environment where a guy feels safe ratting in a belt right up until the instant you point him is strategy, convincing an inferior force to commit to an unwinnable engagement is strategy.

This is not tactics, its just pressing a button.

Except for the part where you had him scouted before he warped through the gate and the safespot close to it, putting disruptors and not scramblers on your ships and using medrange ammo - yeah no tactics after that, just pressing a button (or two if align or orbit outside his optimal)

In all seriousness, I think this subject might actually be of value for CEOs or their military commanders. While the nature of EVE combat severely hampers the ability to introduce actual RL tactics what does still apply are more strategic and grand strategic concerns. What targets should our forces attack or defend? What psychological effects should we be trying for to continue or conclude a war? How can a little guy stand up to a giant?
By teaching commanders to put their forces in the right place you will do more to maximize success than trying to teach them how to fly their individual ships.

Quote: The pinnacle of EVE tactical doctrine is TEH BLOB! : because overwhelming firepower is the correct answer.
Overwhelming firepower is not the answer to everything. Sure, throwing more firepower at something has a chance to disrupt enemy movement and inflict heavy casualties, but overall the application of superior firepower through sheer numbers does not constitute a guaranteed victory.
Quote: You were in the U.S. Marines, it should be an easy concept to grasp.
You might want to read up on Marine Corps MAGTF doctrine prior to making such a claim. :P
Quote: I can't stress enough just how much EVE does not resemble anything remotely like war.
Really? It may not be the type of war we are used to, but it is war just the same.
Interestingly, Sun TzuÆs The Art of War is not just for warfare doctrine. Many CEOs of modern companies read it, since the work can also be used in non-combat situations. But this wonÆt be about simply TAoW, but other tactics, strategy, and doctrine being used nowadays.
