Because EVE is one of those rare games who don't treat players like idiots.

Why do I play EvE?
I have 3 accounts, all science/industry/exploration.
I play Eve because it's the closest thing I have to explore space in the way I would like to in real life. Even though the galaxy of Eve (or Universe, though it looks like a galaxy] is not the same as our own; it still gives me the opportunity I will never get...to explore and conquer space.

I keep "playing" EVE, where "playing" means "logging in once every xx days to add more skills" because I have enough isk to pay for my accounts with PLEX well into 2011. Not continuing to train skills would be a retroactive waste of time.

I started playing EvE over 5 years ago because my roomate was doing it and I wanted a way to talk to him because I didn't see him emerging from his room very often.
It was fascinating, and looked like it could have the potential to be fun. I soon found out that the game itself was pretty boring. It's only when I stopped thinking about playing the game and started working within the game mechanics to create dramatic social interactions, that the game started to become fun.
I play this game because of all the frustrated players who play the game, and my ability to make them dance like puppets, in a way that is more entertaining than reality TV. It's fun, it's relaxing, and opening a new hate mail feels like Christmas every time.

For the most part that you really don't know what happens next, that you have to use your brain a bit, but most importantly for the wide colorful variety of people I have met so far. Pretty funky ride.
Also for me from a technical point of view and being a developer, it's fun to traverse the database and find ways to create useful tools.

I shoot internet spaceships for the Scottish Folds on my desk. They tell me to do... Things... If I don't do them... They stop purring and terrible things happen...
Their latest command is to liberate miners from the oppression and clutches of the bourgeois and their imperialist agendas.
THE GUNS OF THE REVOLUTION WILL NEVER FALL SILENT. THE SCOTTISH FOLD WILL PURR AGAIN!! PRAISE THE SCOTTISH FOLD!!

I think a lot of people play this game because unlike so many other mmo's it rewards a degree of comittment by making 'success' and other interaction dominated by obligations, require more than just grind. You need to think about how you approach every competitive aspect within the game space. Can't think of too many other games, online or off that facilitate this!
Unlike anything else on the market today, your intellect counts for more and there's enough challenge/depth to the game short and long term to allow almost everyone to find their own level of challenge and still have room left to be embarrassed by someone better.
This pleasure pain balance in eve is very very good and pretty unique.
The single main reason I still play eve? Because I know out there someone is always going to be better than me and I find it exciting being (pleasantly) anxious about the prospect of running in to them. Can't say the same for my day job.

The people.
I stopped caring about CCP's half-arsed and incompetent fiddling a long time ago, the only thing I truly like about EVE is the fact it attracts intelligent and colourful people ( no, the entire 0.0 population is not like the CAOD crowd ).
My corporation keeps me playing.

Basically I'm a sociopath. I hate the entire human race and want to inflict as much harm and pain to the fellow human beings as possible. Humans have laws though, courts and law enforcement, that don't let me enjoy my biases to the full. That's why I play Eve. Here I can inflict harm to people, without being persecuted by lawyers or the police. I can destroy, scam, betray and cause as much emotional distress to others as I like.

Edited by: Cipher Jones on 21/07/2010 23:25:31 I play EvE because of all you ***** ass "sociopaths", emo kids, and otherwise mal-adjusted douchebags. It hurts you more when you can't kill me than it hurts me when you do.
Watching you pieces of **** fail at your own game give me an e-chubby.

I've said before I like to master games, but I also like a good science fiction story, EVE lets me pretend to live in that story and take part in it.
tl;dr I'm a nerd. Trolls? In my EVE forums? It's more likely than you think...

Ooh, my favorite flavor is real tears.
The game as designed isn't fun so I don't play by the rules. Actually I don't even play or pay a red cent. The ginormous wad I made from griefing is enough to buy GTC's. You see, my hope is that one special shiny day, I'll find someone in RL that needs a good torturing. Someone that really needs to waste their life chasing an overcomplicated carrot on a stick. That day I'll transfer my account to them and watch in glee as they suffer trying to play this st00pid game.
>>>Or... maybe when my mom dies I'll start playing again, who knows?

I like that it is all one universe, if you meet someone who plays IRL, you never have to ask what side or server they play. One cold universe where your actions effect every one, where politics and planing can change the way we see and play the game.
Where you can be or do anything, any career, Miner, Combat, Trader, Hauler, Explorer, Archeologist, Industrialist, and when you through your wait behind a corp or a faction or an allience, people notice.
And it all centres around what you decide to be.

TBH, since Dominion there isn't much that makes me want to play EVE anymore besides my loyalty to friends and allies.
Terrible lag, and even worse sov mechanics.

At first it was the storyline; I have to admit, I'm a sucker for huge sci-fi universes :P Then I somehow managed to get my as* in the corp I still am today, and that started growing on me. Then we got in a nullsec alliance, and I discovered the allmighty pew-pew that fascinates me to this day.
TL;DR - The backstory, the pew-pew and the training newb on pew-pew basics; also, corp always keeps me entertained :P _________________________________________________

It has been said before, I'll use my own words tho:
- No skill grinding - HUGE array of options to spend my in-game time on, ranging from PVE to suicide ganking all the way up to politics, espionage and everything that comes with that - The fact that there is no protection against being stupid - Great feeling of accomplishment when you pull things off, mainly because of previous reason - Good amount of intelligent people in this game, as opposed to the generic run of the mill MMO's (well ... yeah .. there are exceptions) - Everything is player controlled, player action shapes EVE to a great extend
