Aside from the I Like To Blow Things Up In Spaceships , what are, if any, reasons you play EvE?
I continued playing personally because when my mom died 2 years ago, I wanted a way to vent anger in some way. Granted Battlefield 2 is much easier to do so on, it does not give the same Thrill EvE Online does when engaging in combat. Even to this day, although it is not nearly as breath-taking as it used to be, my heart-rate will increase and my hands would start to shiver periodically while engaged in combat. That happened much much more often when I first started PvPing, hardly ever happens anymore.
I remember a while back when I blown up a heavily faction fitted CNR...or some type of Marauder, I can't remember. Later that day I got EvEmailed about how I ruined the game for him. At this point in time, I was very happy that I was able to completely ruin someones gaming experience as I was still taking a major toll from my mother's passing. Guess I wanted to inflict , or the lack their of, the same type of pain I felt, through a video game of course.
With all that aside, I would think one of the main reasons I play EvE is because of it's NoMercyZeroTolerance atmosphere and a place to Release feelings of any kind. Gave someone 10 Rifters and 10 Thrashers and 5 Stabbers when he first started playing a month ago. Don't know if he is still playing. Blow up a 700mill + CNR years ago out of pure frustration and the , I want to say human but that doesn't feel right, need to destroy.

It's a sandbox game. I don't want my games telling how to play & what to do. Give us the tools & we'll make our own fun. It's skill based, not class based. I can pick and choose skills that I want, not just the skills my class or race gives me. It's skill based, not level based. A 3 month old noob that specialized can pilot his ship as well as a 7 year vet, and possibly better. It's a player economy and deeply interdependant. You don't just level crafting to make your own gear, anything you can make can be sold to someone else and, with some exceptions, has value.
If they'd show some real progress on fixing bugs & gameplay issues, complete additions to the game, and took a stronger stand against macros (not just RMT), I'd have nothing to ***** about.

Exploring.
Despite being 1/2 finished, the complexes and expeditions are downright addicting. I'm trying to play thru them all at least once, (inc expeditions) because the stories behind them are *usually* very good.
The sleepers-sansha-jove love triangle also has my brain tied in knots.

I was feeling like logging into eve was a job. If I didnt have at least 3 hours to play then it was worthless. I have been playing constantly since 2k5 and finally just kinda figured there has to be a better way to spend my time.
No you cant have my stuffs.
If eve ever makes a switch towards more of a small gang atmosphere I might come back.

First of all, Sorry for your loss. Glad you found a creative outlet for your anger.
Personally I keep coming back to eve because no other game has the adrenaline rush that comes with taking a risk. Only in eve does loosing a ship and contents actually mean something. No loading a save game here. You have to live in game with your mistakes.

Intangible reasons mostly due to being cloistered in an unending rat-maze of a career IRL.
EVE is rather interesting, as you pointed out, in that it's more relaistically callus toward the utopian gaming notions like no-grief or very structured environment. I don't know if that draws me in, or if it balances out the sweetness of trying all the nifty carebear things I secretly enjoy... but at the end of the work day EVE is one of a select few things (including drinking, shaggin the wife, and playin football with my mates) that lets me come out of my pessimistic work-shell a while and enjoy myself.

After returning to EVE after playing just about every subbed mmorpg under the skies I can say that for me it is:
ò freedom of choice & diversity ò the game rewarding you for using your intelligence, social skills and talents rather than for following a predetermined path ò meaningful consequences to being stupid and/or unlucky ò community at the helm; from market to 0.0 politics
I have always been tempted to play a lot of other mmorpgs because I am a sucker for immersion (having an avatar rather than a portrait) and beautiful worlds to roam around in. My hopes are that Incarna will satisfy that weak spot and I'll never have to jump into other mmorpg's again and get disappointed because they all end up lacking in the above four points. I agree with everything Barakkus posts. |

It is all about character development for me.
I like starting of with a character that is small ans puny and building him up so that he is all butch and powerful. I then like to test my character in various scenarios (both PvP an PvE) to see how he copes. I use the results of these encounters to determine what skills or equipment I need to acquire next.
Unlike the OP I would get no pleasure in ruining someone's game. I totally endorse other players right to do so, but I prefer my opponents in PvP to be willing and ready to fight. I would get no pleasure in killing a ship fitted for PvE cause that takes no skill and does not develop my character in any way. (Unless we are at war, in which case the needs of the war come first)
I also don't get the hand shaking, heart racing buzz from PvP that others do. I used to be a professional footballer, and playing in front of 50,000 rabid fans make you develop strategies to deal with the nerves and adrenalin rush that such events bring.
So, to sum up, I don't play to blow things up. I play to watch my character grow.

community, single server, sandbox, future prospects
Have got bored of EVE many times to do other things, play other games, etc but always came back eventually. EVE is far from a perfect game, but has the advantage that for the past 6 years practically every MMO released has followed the same tired and broken formula (Questing, XP/Gear grinding, nobody really PvPing til endgame, etc)

You don't have to. Just buy a high level character from eBay. You end up with the same thing, a character with lots of in game skill but a player with none.

Why do I play EvE?
I have 3 accounts, all science/industry/exploration.
I play Eve because it's the closest thing I have to explore space in the way I would like to in real life. Even though the galaxy of Eve (or Universe, though it looks like a galaxy] is not the same as our own; it still gives me the opportunity I will never get...to explore and conquer space.

I started playing EvE over 5 years ago because my roomate was doing it and I wanted a way to talk to him because I didn't see him emerging from his room very often.
It was fascinating, and looked like it could have the potential to be fun. I soon found out that the game itself was pretty boring. It's only when I stopped thinking about playing the game and started working within the game mechanics to create dramatic social interactions, that the game started to become fun.
I play this game because of all the frustrated players who play the game, and my ability to make them dance like puppets, in a way that is more entertaining than reality TV. It's fun, it's relaxing, and opening a new hate mail feels like Christmas every time.

I think a lot of people play this game because unlike so many other mmo's it rewards a degree of comittment by making 'success' and other interaction dominated by obligations, require more than just grind. You need to think about how you approach every competitive aspect within the game space. Can't think of too many other games, online or off that facilitate this!
Unlike anything else on the market today, your intellect counts for more and there's enough challenge/depth to the game short and long term to allow almost everyone to find their own level of challenge and still have room left to be embarrassed by someone better.
This pleasure pain balance in eve is very very good and pretty unique.
The single main reason I still play eve? Because I know out there someone is always going to be better than me and I find it exciting being (pleasantly) anxious about the prospect of running in to them. Can't say the same for my day job.

Basically I'm a sociopath. I hate the entire human race and want to inflict as much harm and pain to the fellow human beings as possible. Humans have laws though, courts and law enforcement, that don't let me enjoy my biases to the full. That's why I play Eve. Here I can inflict harm to people, without being persecuted by lawyers or the police. I can destroy, scam, betray and cause as much emotional distress to others as I like.

Ooh, my favorite flavor is real tears.
The game as designed isn't fun so I don't play by the rules. Actually I don't even play or pay a red cent. The ginormous wad I made from griefing is enough to buy GTC's. You see, my hope is that one special shiny day, I'll find someone in RL that needs a good torturing. Someone that really needs to waste their life chasing an overcomplicated carrot on a stick. That day I'll transfer my account to them and watch in glee as they suffer trying to play this st00pid game.

I like that it is all one universe, if you meet someone who plays IRL, you never have to ask what side or server they play. One cold universe where your actions effect every one, where politics and planing can change the way we see and play the game.
Where you can be or do anything, any career, Miner, Combat, Trader, Hauler, Explorer, Archeologist, Industrialist, and when you through your wait behind a corp or a faction or an allience, people notice.
And it all centres around what you decide to be.

It has been said before, I'll use my own words tho:
- No skill grinding - HUGE array of options to spend my in-game time on, ranging from PVE to suicide ganking all the way up to politics, espionage and everything that comes with that - The fact that there is no protection against being stupid - Great feeling of accomplishment when you pull things off, mainly because of previous reason - Good amount of intelligent people in this game, as opposed to the generic run of the mill MMO's (well ... yeah .. there are exceptions) - Everything is player controlled, player action shapes EVE to a great extend
