haha, amazon ratings are nonsense. Take a look at how that rating was achieved, half the people voted 5 stars, the other half 1 star. I can tell you right now that SC2 will never get a 1/5 rating from any serious game review website/magazine. x |

Most of the reviews that count towards metacritic scores adhere to a certain set of standards and rules that ensure consistant reviewing practices and due process, unlike some spot where people can just post about what makes them mad or happy.
There's more to reviewing a game than just spouting opinion.
However, sometimes I'm pretty suspicious of some of it all. IE - why any halo game scored more than a 6 or 7 is beyond me. Clearly seems like big money business.

Right. Reviewers giving the game a 100.
I hope i don't have to point out on how many levels this is wrong, even if it wasn't Starcraft we're talking about.
Game reviewers don't dare to give bad scores. It means they're not able to obtain copies before their release anymore. I actually go more on user scores than reviewer scores, and mostly the negative ones, they tell me so much more about the game than anything else.
Absurdly positive user reviews i ignore. Absurdly negative user reviews i skim through as they usually have some valid points, but blow them out of proportion. User reviews that give between 50 and 85 are usually the most reliable source of information on what the game is actually like and worth.

I refuse to believe that SC2 got a score anywhere close to Red Dead Redemption, the only game this year so far worth anywhere near 100.

I'm not gonna buy it as I think it's just like the original (which I played to death and all expansions), and I only buy games if they are 'new', like DAO and ME2. I would like to see all the SC2 cinematics in high quality but the internets is so flooded with SC movies I can't find them. Anyone has a tip ?

It does not even look that good. Completely cartoony.
Sorry to jump on the bash train, but 100M on this? What, did 60M go towards the cinematics?
Also, those ingame ones are not that great, I saw edges and jaggs more than once. And a revolver? Got to be ****ing kidding me.

Nobody with any character reads reviews. I love Starcraft 2, but it's not worth a 10, it's not even worth a 9. The best game ever made by my book is still only worth about an 8. 10 is perfect, 9 is close to perfect, no game has ever been either.
I've been looking for a serious, respectable reviewer that doesn't give scores, but those don't make money, so they're hard to find.

You're kidding, right?
Also, Metacritic shoehorns all scoring systems into a percentile, which means any game that gets 10/10 or 5/5 is given a 100 on metacritic. -------------------- In Soviet HED, Gate camps YOU! |

It's been a while since i've seen the major review sites give a bad score to any game with a budget of over $1 million. The one time it happened someone got fired over it - And he didn't even give a bad score, just a mediocre one.

Edge has been wildly inconsistent for a few years now... Can't figure them out. They used to have the rep to give rather low scores, but lately they've been upping them more and more. Not sure what is going on there, but given the trouble paper media are in i wouldnt be surprised if they have to rake in money somehow.

If you talk to someone who has experience in computer journalism you will find that bungs\freebies are commonplace. At least for computer hardware reviews. Might be the case with computer games as well - advance exclusive preview of a upcoming computer game in return is given a more 'favourable' review.

Or perhaps, the reviewers thought the games were worth (or not worth) playing, as objective as any review tries to be, it's still his or her opinion of a game that will vary a lot between person to person.

Enjoying the game, but if I had to pay full price I would be feeling ripped off. It's solid, but I prefer Dawn of War and Company of Heroes more. Unfortunately I have far more friends on the Starcraft wagon so I'll be riding along for 18 months or whatever the new meme is.
Starcraft II feels like more marketing went in than balancing/game design for some reason. Maybe that's just the trend, and CCP isn't out of place to push new content to a critical mass. I may not agree, but that's because I'm invested in the alternative.

I've been playing it more than I should have last couple of days, and I think the game is enjoyable, if somewhat disjointed.
There is a decent story, with some great cut scenes and solid acting. An upgrade system (which is an RPG element mandatory in seemingly every game now), with some either/ors, as well as straight improvements, and choice of mission order. Lost Viking is a great mini-game (am I the only one finding it incredibly hard? I just don't think a keyboard is a very good way to control it), but the huge elephant in the room is that once everything has been said, upgraded, and messed with the actual game part is going back to playing (albeit a slightly more shiny) Starcraft.
The cartoony graphics, and the old-school send-worker-into-mine mechanics are a substantial detraction from the rest of the game.
It's the same ole game that has nothing hugely wrong with it, other than the fact that over the last 10 years it hasn't changed at all, whereas we came to discover how much more RTSes could be. It might be wearing a new suit and an in-style watch, but it's basically Chip Matthews, so soon the excitement and glitz of the story will fade and I'll go back to waiting for Diablo III, wondering if it will also fall victim to a lot of safe decisions.

For a game that's meant to be really polished, there's a whole bunch of critical issues with it. Installing from the DVD didn't work on 2 different PCs; I had to first copy all the files over to my PC and then run the install from there, or it'd just hang at 50%
As for the game freezing all the time, I changed to Windowed mode and it seems to have stopped for now, maybe just haven't seen it yet though but apparently it's a really common problem with nvidia cards.
BTW, if you want to skip a grindy mission, choose to fight the Protoss on the Safe Haven mission. Then you get a nicely-balanced 20-minute mission, as opposed to Haven's Fall which I originnaly chose and took me 1 hour 20 mins as I was pinned down by 7 Zerg bases throughout most the game. (If you choose that anyway, don't bother trying to save the colonies since they'll only get infested again)

you mean the Viking? not sure how, since a whole Zerg army spawns every time a new infestation pops up so they'd just get slaughtered. I had to send in a well-sized ground force to clear them out maybe I'm missing something

You're not supposed to fight the army with them. Setup defenses to hold off the waves of attackers, while a healthy sized squadron of vikings goes and clears out the infested villages.. most of them will not have a heavy group of zerg protecting. Fly in/flank, switch to ground mode, shoot it all up, regroup... move on to the next

Warning: Fanboy post incoming. Skip if hatin'.
While I have to admit that SC II did not re-invent the RTS genre in terms of gameplay, I have to applaud to its overall artsy-ness. I played the first StarCraft and liked the setting and gameplay a lot and thus find the cost for SC II acceptable - even moreso the overall quality.
It's not just a fairly solid multiplayer RTS (I'm not into that competetive league thing much, except for mini-game concepts in those "fun maps" - like Tower Defense or small RPGs) but the whole experience feels smooth and gimmick loaden in single player mode. In a good way.
That is not to everyone's liking I presume but I personally enjoy "things to fiddle around with or watch aside from normal gameplay" a lot. That's complete voiceovers for everything, game pace changing mechanics on certain maps (day/night events, that moving flame wall, the lava areas you have to evac every few mins, etc.), special challenges (like the achievements - not vital but fun to do), stuff to click on between missions in that story mode on the ship (all kinds of objects and NPCs - and the dialogue is brilliant at times), choices which buildings/units to upgrade, how to do missions, and so forth.
That might make me a massive fanboy to others but I've been really satisfied with what I got out of SC II. Those in-game video sequences (not the pre-rendered ones) look pretty awesome, too. It's just a huge nerdgasm for me, seeing people in Space Marine suits walk around, look serious and interact naturally with their environment. :3
There were no issues with the game when it comes to installation and running it for me - did not crash once so far (and I played it extensively). I guess that "DRM" thing was explained by someone already - you just need to activate the game after installation and can then play completely offline.
I almost forgot about it: Love the new map editor. So many things to configure in ways that completely break the boundaries of the game. It's like a game-creator within the game.
Anyways, I recommend to buy and play it at some point (when depends on how much you want to spend on it) - unless you are not into SciFi or can't enjoy immersing yourself in such a game environment.

Didn't buy it.. . Just beat the campaign. It wasn't that great. Not terrible. But... I was disappointed. I did get a kick out of the between missions thing. The armory, lab, cantina, bridge thing. But.. eh. That's really my opinion of it. "Eh".
I've played a few skirmish games so far. It's.. starcraft with some new units. lol. What else WOULD it be? I'm having more fun with that than the campaign. But it's still just "eh".
I haven't decided if I want to buy it yet or not. I guess online play would be a lot of fun for a few weeks.. but the whole bnet2 thing kinda puts me off.
Anyway. I give this game a "Eh.. it's ok". I'm still ****ed about the campaign deal. Since I pirated and can't play online, I can only play skirmishes against the AI. If I bought it, and they made a few changes to bnet2, I might enjoy it more.

CNC4 was such a piece of steaming **** that its hard to find any reviev ABOVE 7/10 (and EVEN when you take into an account that most reviews are biased and fit between 70-100%). And in longer run id be asking about game budget too (afaik it was some asian-multiplayer-RTS game changed into CNC4 to make "moar isk"). Well yeah... actors do cost but thats it.
Personally i gave it around 4/10 (way to **** up best multiplayer RTS out there which was CNC3 + kanes wrath). Only time id buy it if it was in "discount bin" for 3-5USD.
Back to SC2? Around 7/10 for me. Copy-paste of old stuff plus new (old?) graphics. Stupid multi/BNet changes, lack of units. And whats worst of all: do you see those shiny new (and old) toys in the campaing? Guess, what. You will NOT be able to use them over multiplayer! (unless im gravely mistaken and they are actually available in full version on the B-net, played only multi beta and pirated single).

I bought it, and it is an enjoyable game (i like RTS). However the reviews i have seen by 'experts' are ridiculous. Reviewers who couldnt find a single negative thing, in my 7 hours trial i came to 5 serious points. By looking at amazon reviews, where i btw barely saw any who gave 1 or 5 stars, most gave a few with good arguments to support it, i can easily get that to 10 major flaws. There is no way they deserve those 9.5/10 and 10/10 ratings.
But if they rate it badly they dont get preview versions and advertisements from blizard, so they just nicely give good ratings making the entire review stuff useless. Then just discuss the game and skip rating it if it just is an advertisement.
I especially hate the part where i cant play with people from other continents. Or for my trial version, only could play with south-east asians because i got the key from an aussie. One of the fun things about online gaming is meeting people from all over the world.

My 2 cents:
I bought the game for 39Ç so the "overpriced" argument doesn't count. And for that money I had tons of fun although I wasn't a big Starcraft fan before, but I decided to give it a go. The campaign is well made and quite long, I think I spent around 30 hours on hard difficulty which was quite challenging but not impossible, except 2 missions where I had problems. Also, many missions had some nice ideas included which made me forget that the core of them was "search and destroy", they felt different and unique. Considering that I bought the game purely for multiplayer, the singleplayer part alone is easily worth the money.
The multiplayer is as good as expected since they spent a long time finetuning in the beta. I feel that Terran is a bit too strong but that is a matter of balancing patches which will inevitably follow, as with all Blizzard games. You also get a nice editor and in a while many fan- made maps and mods will come in. The gameplay is heavily micromanagement- oriented, you need to be able to make fast decisions and to multitask consistently. You obviously have to like that playstyle, otherwise don't bother with the game.
People who don't like it probably didn't realize before that it is a overhauled SC1. I mean, what did you expect? Blizzard made it clear from the beginning that they won't bring out a completely different game. If you didn't like SC1 its higly unlikely that you will like SC2, it's a no-brainer.
