Tranquility has gone into testing mode following the restart of the server. Initially it was open to players but our Operations team have discovered a database issue which is causing start up problems for players. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
Update 11:46 UTC Tranquility has been restarted in VIP mode. Testing will continue to ensure server stability.

Hello CCP
Any news when TQ be online, the extended downtimes are getting more frequent again. Why did you move the cluster to London? O I forgot better performance???? Ever since you have done this you have had a lot of trouble keeping your customers happy.
Are we going for hourly downtimes next?

Downtimes are scheduled to last one hour. Just because they have been averaging 20 minutes lately and now they are using the entire hour again does not make them extended downtimes.

People with your business sense are what cause businesses to fail. The customer may not always be right, but the customer is king. Sales people that just stand around and don't help not only lose any potential sales, but also cause damage to the image of the company because WORD OF MOUTH SELLS, or inversely, causes a drop in sales.
We complain because we LIKE EvE, not because we "...dont like it...".
When there are no more complaints, it's generally a sign that you have no more customers.
We have a genuine concern for the servers at present. This is the 3rd such failure in a week. That's not good for any server cluster in any business.

maybe, but only maybe you should consider fixing existing issues like:
- database stability
- lagfree gaming
- removal of graphical errors
- errors in game mechanics
- hundreds other known issues
before you push in new addon features - which will be defect and not working meaningly.
best luck and kind regards

Sigh. Should have expected this as it is a replica of Friday's issue. Another day of no play. I hate this GMT+10 Timezone... DT is my enemy.
A question for you CCP... why does the cluster have to be restarted every 24 hours? After all these years, is the code base not sufficiently memory "clean" to allow DT to be shifted to 48 hours? I mean, in the old days it was that cans, etc. didn't clear out no? What about rolling restarts of various regions - so that those of us in Downtime Timezones can scurry off to somewhere where we can still kinda play.
Or is it that you just don't like Australasia and plant the DT right at the worst time? :P (yes yes, I know... the time suites the US more than us bottom dwellers).

Think CCP needs to adopt a policy of gifting players 1000 SP for every downtime minute outside of scheduled or previously advertised downtimes. At least that way there is something small to gain out of not being able to play.

It's not a matter of restarting the cluster, it's a matter of the database has to be locked in order to do certain things with it. If the database is locked then no one can dock, undock, use the market, contracts, show info, lock targets, activate modules, warp, jump, ect...

It's not a matter of restarting the cluster, it's a matter of the database has to be locked in order to do certain things with it.
Only because CCP coded the game in such a way that we need a regular downtime to 'clean' the database. There are plenty of databases in the commercial world with much higher load where 99.999999% availability (that's a mere 31 seconds of downtime a year) is required. Six nines is overkill for a game engine, but there is no reason to give CCP a free pass on this just because their programmers decided that downtime is 'required'.

What happened today and last week was that the query optimizer came to the wrong conclusions about that would be the best plan of action for loading solar systems.
We were getting a bad query plan and index fragmentation does not change the results of the query compilation, but somewhere we hit a so called 'tipping point', a point where the query optimizer suddenly changes its mind on what is best to do.
This often happens due to the number of rows or pages in a table since that is what one part of the decision is based on. This also happens if there is a certain number of rows within the range the query has to scan or seek on and that's where statistics updating helps.
What we did was to override the decisions of the query optimizer and told it to use a certain way of comparing two tables.

Is that a subtle way of saying 'something broke but we ran the database engine tuning advisor in sql management studio and it seems to be working now'?
Yeah, I do that
Edit: Worth going over the execution plans manually as well, its suggestions can't always be trusted.

I wonder hom much performance could be gained by just dropping the MS servers and dabatase, and replace it with a Unix/PostgreSQL environment.
Yeah, it would probably mean that a couple of monkeys would be out of a job, and skilled people needed in return, but that never hurt anyone. (No, not even the monkeys in the long run!)

My client seems to have the same problems loading solar systems every time my fleet jumps into an enemy fleet. Can you peeps help me with that? _______________________________________________

Originally by: CCP Yokai What happened today and last week was that the query optimizer came to the wrong conclusions about what would be the best plan of action for loading solar systems.
Well I see what your problem is - You've got the darn Flux Capicitor in backwards. Back this thing up to 88mph and you should be able to roll back to when this game was semi-stable.
I think we need somemore free skill points to help our optimizer deal with all the extended downtimes.
