Just because I love seeing the experienced players put their knowledge of the game to work:
If you didn't have to worry about DPS at all and had unlimited access to any ship/mod in the game, what's the best tank someone could build? How many ships/how much DPS could it withstand before it broke?

Easy, damnation or something with all armor hardeners and eanms or whatever, implants also etc...
Then it's repped by OVER 9000 guardians. Infinite tank, doit.

lol, oops ... I intended it to be just one ship, not a fleet. When I said unlimited resources, I meant you had your pick of any ship or mod reguardless of cost. :)

10,236dps omni tank. With Crystals and a Siege Warfare Mindlink. Not sure if there are other shield-tank-boosting implants, and I know you can pop a blue bill (10,536 with a Synth Blue Pill, any bigger than that and it loses cap stability). Not to mention the fit itself is ******edly expensive. But there you go, I doubt you can do better than that on a sub-cap. Triage/Siege all bets are off.

throw in some improved blue pill boosters and you got yourself a tank. This is clearly a signature. |

With some of these huge tank numbers, do you guys have even a rough guess on what kind of ships it would take to break?
I mean, if you got 20k tank, is that like 10 battleships pounding on you before it breaks?

A Battleship will do ~700dps (A little on the high side for most fits/engagements) A Dreadnaught will do ~7000dps (In Siege Mode) A Mothership will do ~10,000dps (A Nyx will do ~12,000dps) Also, remember that a Titan will *volley* for 3,000,000 damage. Not a big deal to all the capital fits that came after my Vulture fit (Still the high number for a cap stable sub-cap!), but it would certainly eat any subcap that comes at it, regardless of tank.
Though, now I'm laughing about DD'ing a Vulture. PEEEEEEEEWWWWWW.
10,000dps Tank ~= 15 Battleships / 2 Dreadnaughts / 1 Mothership 20,000dps Tank ~= 30 Battleships / 4 Dreadnaughts / 2 Motherships
Now you start to see why everyone fits for buffer in big fleet fights. 10,000dps tank is absurd, and you only need a small BS fleet or a couple caps to take it out. 20,000-30,000dps Tank is literally ******ed, and even then you just need a couple of Super Carriers and their support fleet to take it out.

using those figures also doesn't = the dps :)
as you have velocity, tracking etc.. and i would love to see a Dreadnaught or mothership using bombers to hit a Vulture :)
it will tank alot more unless its target painted/webbed completely..
the battleships have alot better chance of breaking the vulture.

The strongest tank is the tank that doesn't have to tank, ex: frigate with a cloak in a safespot.

There is no such think as an unbreakable tank. Not even a supercarrier RR blob is tough enough to be called unbreakable. The best thing you can do to avoid dying is to cloak up and keep your distance. Either that or dock up and stay docked. Log off, unsubscribe, and there you go, you've become invincible.

Where in EFT can you see how many DPS a tank can withstand? I only see the EHP and the "defence" rating thing (which keeps showing only 0 on an armor buffer tank for me).

The reason it shows 0 is that if anything does greater than 0 DPS to you, you'll die eventually. ;) (Not really, you still have shield regen, but hopefully you get the point.)
That's the nature of buffer tanks. You need to load the ships up with tanking modules that actually repair your ship in some way to see the defense rating. And that number shows the amount of incoming raw DPS your tank can absorb and hold steadly.

Nothing stupid about fun speculation, we all know this isn't serious so lighten up, have some fun :)
Besides, we're talking about Tanks. ie: Taking the damage in your face and seeing how long you last. Logging off is avoidance. ie: Not warping to the fight in the first place attains the same hypothetical thing.
