I'll second this.
I strongly don't recommend moving whole-hog into w-space. Do your research and manufacturing in hisec, even if it is horribly painful to earn/buy the standing to anchor a tower.
You want to keep a minimal presence in w-space. Don't take anything into w-space that you are not prepared to lose, and this includes a POS. I wouldn't put anything more than a CHA and a SMA on a w-space POS, plus defenses. You don't want to attract attention. I wouldn't even use a faction tower.
Our C2 w-space system was sieged recently. We lost about 7-8 billion of assets, and could have lost much more. We learned a lot from that experience, like to run a minimal w-space operation on the cheap, 'cause you might have to abandon it when confronted by a superior force.
ouch...sorry to hear about this man
I agree with Tau....the novelty of POSs and uncharted space wears off pretty quick...it took nearly a year for me to burn out completely and pack up; I was running a 3 large tower operation with assets probably up to 30 billion...T2, T3, capitals, boosters....it was cool for a while but became pretty high maintenance...especially for one guy with a team of alts
While you guys do have a few people, its really not worth setting up heavily until you are really really ready...and at that point you should not be setting up with a high sec static.
My suggestion? Do what I am currently doing. Find a system you would like that appears to be occupied by carebears (easy to be determined, corp description will say something like (mission/mine/pve/wormholes blah blah, and they'll have like 10-20 people. Now, setup a deep safe spot or two and anchor some Giant Secure Containers. You can store spare mods/ammo here. You won't be able to refit of course, but here's the trick for that: find a class 2 system with dual statics.
The first should be to high or low (doesn't matter, you won't be moving much in and out, but loot and ammo, doable in a covert ops). The second should be to wormhole space (I know c2 and c4 ones exist, don't know about C1 and C3).
So, the idea is that you will always have easy access to k-space and new sites to run. If you are willing to forgo the dual static and not have k-space one jump away at all times, you could setup in one of those higher class systems with static to lower class. Again, just use the deep space safespots with GSCs for storage and away you go.
You don't have to worry about being sieged, no POS refueling, no maintenance like that. If you must do POS industry, do it safely in high sec.
My 2 cents. I understand the allure of a "deep space outpost, self sufficient residence" oh too well. But if you want efficiency with low risk, the squatter method works well.
