Edited by: Blank Overtone on 29/07/2010 20:40:51 It is just a wild thought but ...
I think it would be nice to let the quality of an item, build by a character, be affected by the skill this builder has.
For example, If someone is building a module with the necesarry skills at lvl 1, the item is usable, but may malfunction if you don't have high enough skills for using it.
On the other hand, items build with the necessary skills at lvl 5. The chance of malfunction is going more to 0% and if you have decend skills for using it you may have better performance out of the module.
So also the price of the item on the market will be variable, depending on the quality of the item.
This way people who are going for a manufacturing character have an advantage over the people who are building stuff once in a while and your skill level influences the performance of the modules you are using.
So also many different combinations and advantages can be used then is possible now with ship fitting.
What do you think?

I think you run into trouble with the malfunctioning of an item. I think the core of the idea is good, but perhaps have skill only effect the quality of the items use, not whether it will break or not.
It may be simpler to change the names of meta 1-4 T1 modules to something more generic, such as:
Meta 0 = Prototype Warp Scrambler Meta 1 = Basic Warp Scrambler Meta 2 = Warp Scrambler Meta 3 = Improved Warp Scrambler Meta 4 = Advanced Warp Scrambler
Then have your skill represent the meta level that you produce (1 though 5).
In addition, wouldn't it be great if the manufacturers name was on the modules they produced.
I'd love to see that the Maelstrom I'm flying was

or something along those lines.

i agree with what you said, it is maybe better to use the meta level. For me it is important to address the different type of variations you can build depending on your skill level.
also by adding the name of the builder, the builder isn't anonymous anymore and can make name and fame in the universe.
Also that way, corporations/alliances know who to contact to have some ships/modules build and delivered, for a "special" price.

I too want a ☼Warp Disruptor II☼, but I think this would just overcomplicate matters too much for the average industrialist.

I really really like the idea of having items bear the name of their producer, but I'm not sure how that would work with packaging and stacking ships and modules, and I'm VERY sure that I don't want that stuff to be unstackable.
The trouble with the idea of skills affecting quality is that it will make production completely worthless for anyone who doesn't have skills maxed out, because no-one will ever buy their stuff.
There's just too many people producing who *do* have maxed-out skills. (I should know; I haven't been playing that long, and my producer character's production skills are flawless.)

I think your arguments are pretty irrefutable in both cases. Sarcasm - Because i'm too far away to strangle you. |

The craftsdwarfship of this Warp Disruptor is of the highest quality. It menaces with spikes of Arkonor.
Also @the Op, no. the current production system works fine. what you're asking for is a total overhaul of every item in the game, and they aren't even going to get to things that are actually broken for too long as it is.

I'd also like to see names on items, not just the producers but also of every owner...who knows what items Chribba might have owned, maybe one of your mining drones :P
I kinda missed this "feature" in every game. Buy that awesome sword? It's been owned by Conan the Barber (the famous dude on your server)
