Edited by: Cannonn on 22/12/2004 16:43:32 Phew well i met my first Player Pirate last night.
Me and a few friends are fairly new to this game (7 days now) And we are intending to become something akin to a pirate clan. However for now we are mere miners and mercs.
We were in Amari i think it was called, a 0.4 zone with some nice Pure Jaspet Mining away when at 1am my mates all log off but impressed with this new found gold mine i take control of my friends account with the hoarder so i'm controling my Dessie (Thrasher) with 3 miner 1's and my mates hoarder with 1 miner 1.
Decided to be paranoid and position both ships in a fairly clear space (as i've already expereinced the stuck between to roids thing) facing the only station in the system ready to jump and started mining away with one eye on the scanner for Rats and NPC's
Just as i fill the 2nd load for the hoarder i see something warping in. Quickly empty the jetisoned container into my Dessie as the hoarder (Which was taking from the container) is full and start the warp to station
Sure enough it's a player Pirate, 10mill bounty,I didn't get the name as i was busy running and trying to stop my heart imploding but a quick glance at the profile read something along the lines of Death has no mercy and nor do i. The ship was big, fast and descibed as something along the lines of "Pride of the Caldari Navy" Given my lack or offencive weapons or experince, knowledge of his capabilities and my valuable cargo i just warp out before he's even come out of warp on his way in.
I was suprised how much my heart was pumping as i tried to get to saftey. The Dessie was making good speed to the station with all my tweaks for speed and afterburner i've been installing/training but the Hoarder is managing a mere 212 with a 10mn booster. When it's obvious the hoarder isn't goint to dock quickly and suree enough the rat knowing there is only 1 station in the sector warps in chasing us i decide to act as blockade between the hoarder and him as it docks rather than loose my mates ship and a cargo worth 200k. He ignores me and targets the hoarder at which point i panic and just start for the dock myself. As his first salvo opens up the hoarder vanishes into the station unharmed! Relife!! Then he begins locking onto me but the same again just as he opens up i dock. Harvested a total of 890,000isk and decided that now i had the rats attention it was time to set my skills training and go to bed!!
Feel almost sorry for the Rat as it must of been very frustrating for him to have 2 totally harmless to him (pretty much) ships full of cargo get away without a single hit or even time to threaten us..err...me. Taught me a few things though. Its quite suprrisingly scary to have a rat on you!! Rats monitor sectors remotly and come to you so it's not as safe just fiding a remote system as i though and hoping one doesn't chance across you. And most importantly i learnt to keep an eye on local to catch these rats as they come into the sector not wait for them to jump on top of me before i start running!!!
Rats are definantly a good thing. For a 0.4 it was suprisingly easy to dodge or destroy the npc's and control the Belt there for 3 or 4 hoarder trips a go for a million or so in 30-40mins but the rat certainly made it more interesting, scary and risky and made damn sure i didnt just wipe out the npc then go afk for 20 mins which i was tempted to do (really...really needed the little minmatars room!) Also looking forward to being a rat myself down the line and trying to find a better way to catch people as even with the jump on us the rat didn't get a hit in let alone have much chance of destroying/droopping my cargo. Will be an interesting challenge on both sides of the fence ;)

yaar...
even though he was in a raven... a wee tip (if yer setup for it) would be to try and hold him... sentries are gonna pwn him while u scramble... bit risky if yer in a frig as his torps will give ya a hard time, but will make him think twice next time.

Don't think he has the skills to use scramblers yet, isn't usual in the first 7 days of training to pick that skill __________________________________________________ "Time will reveal everything, but only once so be prepared." |

Good story, Darth, obviously any pvper's alt will have prop jamming at lvl 1 on day one, but no real newbie will train that right away.

hehe I use scrambler and webber, otherwise those damned missiles don't hit and they just outrun them. Only problem is when they have a few stabs on And trained learning first instead of any other electronic skills. Now the only electronic skill I don't have is cloaking __________________________________________________ "Time will reveal everything, but only once so be prepared." |

Yeah your right i don't have Scrambler, or EW or many such skills trained yet and they are pretty far down my priority list.
For now i am training my Personal Stats and Gunnery as a Priority, Ship and Systems upgrades 2ndary equal to mining and refining then Ship Skills and Leadership as a 3rd. I'm also throwing in a few basic Social Skills just for a few monetary and allignment boosts but only to lvl1 or 2 (an hour or so)
I guess this means for now i will be playing prey, having to rely on a quick eye and good preperation to bug out of trouble safely or rely on my team mates to skill up to act as escort. Seems to be working for me so far and it will make it all the sweeteer when i'm ready to start playing these "rats" at thier own game as i'm sure the "honour amoung theives" here is as with any community i've met so far. Kill them as anyone else then honour their lack of skill by podding them. Personally i'm in a semi rp situation ;) this will mean the way i pick my targets will be different and won't be out podding people for the hell of it but i'm Certainly going to start taking names of my aggressors especialy any that get the better of me (none so far) so that i can always pay back the favour later ;) And i an enjoying it and looking forward to more of the same on both sides of the fence ;)
For now i'll just say nice to meet you all and catch me if you can ;) This is the only chance your gonna have to have an easy time of me.

Posting with your main shows a courage many on this board lack.
Your tactics are head and shoulders above most players in their first week and TBH better than most miners in general. Definitely worth posting with your main. --------------

Nice post Cannonn.
The adrenaline-high, heart-pumping moments are what make this game so enjoyable. Kudos for surviving your first PvP encounter, and for getting valuable hindsight out of it. Oh, and don't feel too sorry for the pirate, be assured that he would've shown no mercy whatsoever.
Welcome to the community, and may you have a long and prosperous career, pirate or otherwise - from the looks of it, you will.

Thanks for the warm welcome ;) I hope to learn more (There is so much to learn). I have played X2 quite a lot so i have some ideas on how to take care of myself in dangerous space :) though i do miss a few things in this game. (Like the fact that fleeing into an asteroid belt didn't actually help me as you can fire through roids...and stations...and ships...you get the idea!!) THe lack of collision damage suprised me to ;) nothing ruins the experince more than going to dock and flying through a space station ;)
Also kina was hoping that if someone does get the better of me rather than sit tehre and die i could just arm all my torps and ram into him and self destruct hurting them with the collision/explosion but no such joy :p
Btw expect me to be remebering your names and looking for blobs for the next few nights just in case ;) remeber i'm paranoid and now i've told you more than i should have ;)

i seem to have a habit of stumbling into pirates, i lost my rax to a pirate with -9.2 sec rating surely some like that would be better off hunting ppl who might have posed a challenge not noobs like myself, i was getting owned at range 4x what i could return fire and thus my rax was down on its second day. id have thought though that ppl might prefer a challenge

Well i met him again, same time same belt (turns out he's American hence the time he logs in midnight to 1am GMT)
This time my 2 mates are with me (which actually turned out to make things worse lol) so its the same set up +1 dessie. Dessie 3 Miner 1s, Dessie 2 Miner 1s and a Hoarder 1 Miner 1.
Plan, we all mine, Dessies dump to container, Hoarder picks up and does the runs to and from the station. I'm on watch for PC Rats watching local, and corp chat for signs of rats, 2nd Dessie watching and dealing with NPC Spawn.
Hoarder decides to "Take a break" and watch funny cartoons on Newgrounds.com whilst in the station or something and leaves us piling up ore wondering where he's at.
about 7500 Pure Jaspet and In Jumps rat number 1, Not recognised but we high tail to the station, dock and sit there Screaming at our team mate to get his butt back to the hoarder nah!!!!
Rat 1 simply Sits there, no bounty on his head and +security rating but pirate profile and clan..hmmmm.
By this time our absent friend returns and we b*tch a bit about loosing a rather large quantity of Pure Jasper as he wasn't doing his job, so he decides to go pick it, me running escort and my mate sitting in the station keeping an eye on the Rat.
We leave...get the the belt, empty the container all ok, Rat still in the station..hmmm Then in jumps another Rat, The same guy from last night ;) i got his name this time, BadSanTa, no doubt about it, this is bad and my mate is still flapping big time from having gotten into this situation and isn't listening to much.
1st rat undocks from the station and blockades that, damn, teamwork, smarter than last night, guess this explains the first guys good standing, he's just the scout waiting to call in the backup when we are vunerable and trap us.
Sadly before our Hoarder gets the warning (and doesn't bother to check the scanner or local) he jumps to the station, followed by BadSanta he gets sandwiched, killed and quickly podded, lasted almost a whole 3 seconds.
At this point the remaining dessie is smart enough to know its all done to hell and simply sits in the station out of the game. I jump to the Star gate (praying the 2 more people who just jumped in aren't rats as well but seems they jumped in from the 0.3 gate and i'm headed out the 0.5 so i don't even bother checking)and get to saftey (again) albeit with a very ****ed off team mate yelling through my ear (ventrillo)upset that I lost HIM his hoarder and got HIM podded 0_O
Matey in the Station is camped for a good 45minutes with them not leaving until he leaves or logs.
Got to hand it to the rats my mate was very peeved (his own damn fault imho) and started trying to berate the rats for various things and placing slurs on thier breeding and other personal traits ;) but they simply respond with heard it all before, doesn't bother us much and ignore further taunts without cheap tacky ***** talking and declining conversation requests.
I sent Badsanta An Eve mail introducing myself and giving him an electronic pat on the back for getting us this time but explaining in no uncertain terms that he won't get us a 2nd time ;).
My mate camped in the station eventually logs, i've bought my mate a new hoarder just to settle him down (he has at least been insured and cloned so he's actually made a profit off my butt for buying him a new hoarder + the mill he got off MY post and your Generosity ;)) but still insits its my fault (or rather his fault for listening to me) whilst i seem to recall it being disctinctly his lack of listneing to me that started the mess :p
In the end we've made 2.6million worth of Nox (still in the station!!!)so -the 460,000 for the hoarder we are still in a nice profit for 2 nights work and i've learnt a lot.
In addition to last nights lessons i now know.
To remeber that there is more than just the system you are in ;) rats can wait outside, lay traps ambushes, surround you...all sorts of nasty stuff, teamwork and feints are key.
If you get seperated from your cargo, its lost, leave it, it's not worth the ship+agro let the rats have it this time.
If the plan isn't goign to plan because someones not pulling their weight or goofing off, the plan isn't happening abort don't try to force it through things go very very wrong and you start missing stupid things (like a 2nd rat jumping in!!)
Tbh though me and my mate have received a donation from you lot for a mill each (thank you so much!!) and this goes some way to shutting him the heck up ;) and replacing what we lost so that we can recover the loot traped in the station (when the US are asleep or at work!!)
Well one more name on the Vendetta Note pad ;), BadSanta.

I jump to the Star gate (praying the 2 more people who just jumped in aren't rats as well but seems they jumped in from the 0.3 gate and i'm headed out the 0.5 so i don't even bother checking)and get to saftey (again) albeit with a very ****ed off team mate yelling through my ear (ventrillo)upset that I lost HIM his hoarder and got HIM podded 0_O

hehe nice Story Cannonn!! :)
And one quick tip: make Bookmarks!
Station -> Can Can -> Station
So they can't harm u when u flee back to the station and it makes hauling a lot easier :)) and BMs to the next systems is sometimes a good idea too...

Yeah that was the plan taht we keep emptying it but as i say hauler took a break mid op so it all went to shat :( My fault as well for insisting he go out and get it :p but hey.
Yah i was just looking at bookmarks and safespots etc. Some nice tricks to making safe spots and i'm even thinking of placing a "scout" on the gate so that if they camp the station we can get to a .5 and visa versa. This guy seemed to use just a massive number of missiles so my mate is training defender missiles to hopefully counter some of that and boost is sheilds/hull Tbh though i think we are going to tweak ourselves more for pure speed and jump at the first sign of trouble incoming ;) May also start to move on from this system to some other .4 or .3 with a neighbouring "safe" system as no doubt now that he's ganged up to 2 pp if we manage to start evading him now he will up the ante again with more people :p.
I've read about this log on off stuff...sounds filthy to me and i think we will stick with the run and hide tactics rather than just log off (in most games i've played log off leaves your char sitting their vulnerable for a few minutes, longer if your an aggressor or criminal just to avoid this kind of cheap trick and people lived with it, IE UO) Look forward to seeing what tonight brings ;)

yeah instas are the way to go when mining low sec. Make an insta to the can (fly past 15km on flight path from station, BM spot then use that to warp to) and do the same for the station (fly only ~12km past the station on flight path from belt). That way there is no travelling and u can instadock
As for the rat himself, as he was flying a raven, which is pretty much the best dmg dealer in game (debatable i know). Defenders do now work but u better pray u take out ALL his torps cos 1 or 2 of these will make light work of a destroyer, and an indy come to think of it. You might be able to buy yaself enuf time to get away with defenders. btw, just so u know a raven can fire 6xtorps/cruise every 12-13 secs (go look dmg on a torp )
Was a nice read thou, and kudos for posting with main, i have never liked alts very much tbh

This seems to be a good place for entertaining pirate stories, so here's another one.
Me and my friend want to mine Jaspet in a 0.4 sys. He takes his Amarr BC and loads it up with mining lasers and a few missile launchers. I take my Tempest BS and arm it to the teeth with 2 heavy missilve launchers, 4 guns, and a heavy nos. The idea is that he mines and hauls while I stay in the belt, guard him and the can and monitor the local channel for player pirates, plus take care of any NPC's. Everything was going well. Had close to a full can when a frigate warps into the belt. I had already checked this char out- positive security rating, but corp name looks a bit dodgy. He sat there and looked at us for a while and then started locking onto the BC. My first thought was "this guy has to be crazy" taking on a BS and a BC in a Frigate! So my friend and I hammered him till he warped out. It was at that time that I started cursing the fact that I had NOT equipped a warp scrambler (fool me). Meanwhile my friend switches to his hauler to pick up the ore in case we have any more trouble, and gets stuck on a roid (I couldn't believe it). Next thing I know the frigate is back with a mate who is in a caracal caldari cruiser (missile boat). They start pounding the hauler which lasts all of about 5 secs. Hauler is lost but friend gets away in his pod. In the meantime I had been hitting the cruiser hard with all I had, their shields had collapsed like a card house and I was chewing into their armour like a starving man with a *****er. The cruiser in return was slamming it's missiles into me, but was having little effect on my 6000+ units of shields. It was like throwing darts at an angry rhinocerous (I was ****ed at this stage as they had destroyed my friend's ship). They warp out. Once again I was left cursing about the lack of a warp scrambler. I take as much as the ore from the can as I can carry and then head back for the station.
I dump the ore and then undock to pick up more. Who do I happen to meet outside the station? The same caldari cruiser that had destroyed my friend's hauler. They immediately locked onto me and opened fire, but had failed to remember that sentry guns are placed outside stations. The station sentry gun took their ship out with one shot and I was left sitting looking at their pod and cargo container. Revenge was at hand! They were a sitting duck. I immediately began targetting their pod, and because they had fired on me first, I was legally able to fire on them with no repurcussions from the sentry guns. Could it get any sweeter? They warped out. Arrrrgh! If only for a warp core stabiliser. However I did loot the entire contents of their cargo can to compensate my friend and recovered all our ore too.
Lesson learnt from this encounter: -remember to equip a warp scrambler BEFORE PvP events.
This event has been one of the highlights for me of playing the game so far, I hoped U enjoyed reading about it as much as I enjoyed playing it.

You cant pod people with a sec status over -5 anywhere without the sentries attacking you and you taking a massive sec hit.
It is rather lucky for you that he did in fact manage to warp out in time.
Also, heavy launchers on a tempest is criminal. -------------------------------------------- CONCORD: Kneecapping Pilots for Misdemeanors Since 2003 |

Cannonn, here's a few tips:
1. Go to options and go to shortcuts, on the right list there should be a 'Toggle Autopilot' selection. Highlight and hit the <<< button, then find it in the left list, right click and hit Edit Shortcut (That is, if the window didn't already pop up)
Set yourself a hotkey (I use Ctrl + Alt + Shift + A) and next time you're camped in a station get into a shuttle or a frig with inertia stabs, do your hotkey (You should get an Autopilot Engaged message) and undock. You should be gone looooooooooooong before the enemies can ever target you.
You might also want to try and taunt them with a fast frig if you or one of your mates can fly a frig with MWDs, trick the raven into shooting at you at the station and force him to tank the sentries.. but make sure you're out of webbing range (10 KM) otherwise the torps are gonna mess you up.
You shouldn't have MUCH to fear at a 0.4 station or gate as the sentries will attack him if he attacks you and he can't stay there forever (since one BS comes along randomly and he's free to kill the Raven)
Uhh.. you *Might* want to setup a Giant Secure can for your mining since you can lock it and your hauler mate can go afk for a little while (You have 3900 cargo space limit in a giant can though) and just come out when it's full so you can leave at any given time to run away :P
If you're newer to game you MIGHT want to stick to 0.6 or so since you can still mine rox there and get nocx, but meh, your choice, you learn more in low sec anyway ;)
BTW, these guys are real skilled, preying on new players mining in their battleships ;)
Good luck in future travels, and keep us posted =)
