I am not all that knowledgeable but have been doing a fair bit of reading on EVE to improve.
Jita is often referred to as the main trading hub. But I also read about suicide runs and dirty attacks are common in this area. For example the much talked about PLEX scandal.
Is it that bad, is it worth it? Why go to Jita if I have to freak out about these attacks?

Jita's perfectly safe if you're not an idiot. For one, don't carry 74 plex in a Cyno Kestrel. If you carry an expensive cargo in either a fast ship or a ship with a good tank (and you instawarp to planet 4), as long as you warp fast and don't stay for a few minutes, you'll be fine.
On another note: Mr. Plex-Kestrel did that during a war. Now that's just stupid.

Jita is your one stop shop. Its like Walmart, you can find nearly anything there instead of searching all over new eden. The downside is it attracts a lot of pests; those annoying lifeforms that live under asteroids and other dark places (lowsec). When undocking from jita 4-4, the rule don't fly what you cannot afford applies heavily and you need to have an instant undock BM several thousand kms away. Its also recommended you don't fly an industrial or AFK, it it attracts attention like a beautiful woman in a very short mini skirt.

Chances are, you'll never have to freak out about these attacks. You have to remember, people don't generally suicide gank you for no reason at all. There has to be some value in return for thier actions.
For example, if you went to Jita, bought and fit a battleship, the chance you would be ganked is small. The same is true for most average ships. Heck, even if you loaded a Badger Mrk 2 full of frigates, with fittings to match (7 frigates) you could get out without being shot at.
What gets you killed is when you do something stupid like carry large quantities of expensive items in cheap, easily destroyed ships. The PLEXs are one example, but it could have happened with BPOs or faction modules and the like. Yeah, in that case, you should use a good ship, know the aggression/session change mechanics, and warp to either Jita Planet 4 or Jita Planet 4's moon 1 (both natural instant warp points for the Jita 4-4 undock).
However, to be afraid of Jita for almost any normal purchase is, well, being paranoid. You aren't a big enough fish for them to worry about. It's like being afraid to go to the grocery store for fear someone will hit your car in the parking lot, totaling it. Sure there is a slim, slim chance it may happen, but do you live your life in a constant state of fear because of it? I doubt it.
So really, don't let one or two scare stories or the bad experience of other idiots defer you from using the most common trade hub in EVE. I forget the exact numbers I saw, but well... Jita is host to some enormous amount of ISK passing between players each day, in the billions per hour I believe. If it wasn't generally safe, people wouldn't go there. So really, don't be ruled by fear. Go check it out. Chances are, unless you are in a war dec or are carrying something extremely valuable, no one will notice you are there shopping.

As the others have said, it's fine if you're not an idiot. Think of it as an old fashioned market, of sorts - you can get anything you want there, usually at the best price, but you need to be careful when you're leaving so as to not have the bags ripped from your hands.
Amongst the many safeguards, possibly the best is to go there in as fast a ship as you can fly and then undock and hit the MWD and burn out to 500+km from the station in a completely straight line (if you get bumped when you undock, dock up and try it again) so that you have an insta that will take you immediately into a warp. Even in a freighter i can warp away so quickly nothing can catch me.
Bad things will always happen, but Jita is safe enough so long as you are smart enough. .

Again, both the planet Jita 4, and the 1st moon of Jita 4 are built in quick warps away from the Jita 4-4 station. You can bookmark either of those as an instant undock, or warp to one of them and drop a bookmark on your way for your own personal insta undock. Also, I happen to lilke using the planet or moon as it tends to not worry so much if you undock and you are slighly mis-aligned to your bookmark.
Oh and just so Father Void knows, insta undocks are bookmarks that line up with the station exit. If you make them right, you can usually immediately warp to one of these bookmarks the moment you undock. This way you spend very little time outside the jita station.

Or if you are more paranoid than that, use an alt sitting on the undock to warp you to this insta undock before your undocking character can even see the overview.
Ultimately, unless you are extremely bad its easy to get out of Jita alive. ~ One million alts cant be wrong.

Hi Void - Klandie here ....
To clear up another fallacy
You never have to go to Jita to get the best price ... that is hype and mis-direction. MANY other hubs (Rens, Hek, Oursulaert and Amarr) have better prices GENERALLY.
I usually sell in Jita cos I can sell at a higher price ...
The things that amuse me everytime I go to jita is the noobs that
1) Say that it is the cheapest - it isnt 2) Will only do business with a in-station trade - cos u WILL get ripped off 3) Are quitting and want to give isk away - they never are 4) The scammers that rely on you being to pre-occupied to notice that u are paying 1500% too much (selling a t1 item as a t2 or t3) 5) believe the only place to buy things cheaply is jita ...
And lastly the feeling that everytime I leave jita, I want a shower

Never? Not true, in fact Jita often has the best prices on stuff. Not always, of course, but often. Often enough that (if lowest price is your goal) it's always worth checking Jita

Just don't fly anything that can get popped in one shot, and you'll probably be fine. Of course this depends on just how expensive your cargo's going to be, and whether gankers have forewarning of your shopping spree. So basically don't use industrials, use tanked cruisers and up, or if you have a really big load, a freighter with an insta.

o.0
For almost anything, Jita universally does not offer the best price- Jita offers the place where buy and sell orders tend to be the CLOSEST.
This is an important distinction. You can get better than Jita prices setting up your own orders elsewhere, but you don't get it NOW.

my most loved hauling trucks that are not a charon. the Orca, lots of room in the corp hanger that you can stick things that cannot be scanned. and the Crane, if it is small enough to fit into the Crane then you have a hauler that while it lacks a super tank it warps fast and it cloaks. your only high risk moment is undocking.
this is true for high sec and low sec only though when talking the crane. in Nullsec there are of course traps setup to combat even cloaked ships if the campers desire to go that far.

I shop at Jita all the time, spending billions there..
I shop the deals, save loads of cash on the seller competition, then hire a courier like RF or someone and I have it delivered to my system for less cost and time (and worry) then if I do it myself, dodging all the gankers...
its not hard really..
