Hello pilots of New Eden.
I'd like to start an Orca pilot to help my mining char. Playing with EveMon i came out with a plan that takes ~56 days (with a remap and +4 implants) to get the mindlink and the ship at level 4 (85days total time to level 5), but i'm not sure i've considered everything. Is the whole required time good? Is there anything else worth training, considering that i want to move it on my main account as soon as possible?
Thank you.
For reference, this is my plan so far:
Cybernetics II Cybernetics III Cybernetics IV Learning III Logic III Instant Recall IV Eidetic Memory I Eidetic Memory II Eidetic Memory III Learning IV Iron Will I Iron Will II Iron Will III Iron Will IV Spatial Awareness III Spatial Awareness IV Empathy I Empathy II Empathy III Empathy IV Focus I Focus II Clarity I Clarity II Clarity III Presence I Presence II Presence III Focus III Clarity IV Spaceship Command IV Spaceship Command V Science IV Mining III Mining IV Mining V Astrogeology I Astrogeology II Astrogeology III Industry I Industry II Industry III Industry IV Industry V Mining Barge I Mining Barge II Mining Barge III Mining Barge IV Mining Barge V Leadership I Mining Foreman I Mining Foreman II Mining Foreman III Mining Foreman IV Mining Foreman V Mining Director I Industrial Command Ships I Industrial Command Ships II Industrial Command Ships III Industrial Command Ships VI (Industrial Command Ships V worth it?)

there is no fast way to get into an orca mate, it'll take you 4/5 months to get into it with a fresh char, and then another few months to get the descent leadership skills you need for you to become a descent orca pilot..
If your really serious about this orca pilot thing you should get cybernetics to 5 and mining director up there too to get that mining foreman mindlink (gives a bonus to your ganglinks)
if your not THAT serious about it getting the skills to 4 would probably be enough..
on a sidenode, you would benefit more from another Hulk rather than the orca, rule of thumb says that if you have 4 hulks it would be better to replace the 4th with an orca.. the bonus's would make the other 3 mine more than the 4th would without bonus's

Oh, that's interesting :| Thank you so much.
I decided to go for the Orca becouse i don't like jetcan mining (secure containers neither), so i could scoop all the ORE with the Orca while helping the Hulk char with bonuses aswell.

The thing I don't understand is that you want to move your Orca to your main account. Isn't your miner on your main account and if so, how would your Orca character be able to help him?

Edited by: Neliel Soifon on 11/08/2010 10:29:29 No sorry, my main runs missions and my alt is a miner (well, not yet tbh), so moving the orca on the main account would allow me to mine with both the orca and the hulk :) (...maybe).

wouldn't it be more efficient to just train a second Hulk?

Well, i have to admit that before Macvombat's post i had no idea it effectively is :) I thought the orca would have been more efficient due to it's bonuses, that's why i wanted to go for it and it would have be a solution to my "hauling" problem too; yes i could use a t1 industrial ship, but it doesn't give bonuses and would be a waste for an alt, don't it?

In thise case I would just train for a mammoth on your main account. It requires minmatar industrial IV but that trains really fast. Why a mammoth? Because it can haul 1 full can of ore in 1 go if you use a giant secure container in it.

If you really want to go fast with a fresh character you can get it done in 68 Days.
Do not remap off the start, Get the +4 implants at the start like you have, then go all out on the skill path you have except get the mining foreman to 5, then mining barge 3.
Once you have that down, use your free remap and go 15 points perception, 9 points willpower. This will allow you to fly through the mining barge 4/5, spaceship command 5, and Industrial command Ships 1-4.
In this fashion your alt will be in a retriever and giving the 10% mining bonus already, until you get the orca and can run the links.
It is true that a 2nd Hulk will produce more ore, but an Orca is infinity more handy for semi-afk mining. You don't need to make runs often, you have secure ore storage, you can salvage rat wrecks around you, and mine in systems with no stations.

And no one has mentioned that his EHP is going to literally be in the ****ter? I mean I know an Orca is roughly a battlecruiser in EHP, but suicide ganks happen and having no tanking skills and NONE of the base-ehp-increasing skills is just asking for a few BCs to jump in and take you down. Big investment to lose because you didn't want to take an extra 3-4 weeks to learn Shield Operation, Shield Management, Hull Upgrades and Mechanic.

Naked orca (just a DC) = roughly the EHP of a freighter. It's a bit much than a BC.

The orka gives in total 55% bonus to mining plus increased range to those that are in a gang with it. This is of course with perfect skills.

Im currently skilling for an orca on a fresh alt.
I'm in the process of training the learning skills (tier 1 to V and tier 3 to IV) then i've got it remapping to max charisma and then skilling all the leadership skills invovled (mining director leadership warfare link specialist mining foreman) to V. Then i've remapped and focused on the skills required to fly the thing. After that i've got the core skills. I'm just curious do you reckon this is the best way to go. Going on this i'll be flying the orca by the 5th of december and by the 23rd of december all i'll need to train is industrial command ships to V to perfect buff. So by my calculation its 133 days left before im in an orca with perfect buffing and then around a month or two to get the support.
Is this right or should i swap the leadership and ship around. I'm unsure as the second remap would then leave me with high charisma (pretty useless for training core skills) ------------------------------

Edited by: Boreesh on 13/08/2010 15:03:38 Just be sure that the remap to Charisma is worth your time. You only get one a year after the first two, so using it up just to get the leadership skills out of the way may not be worth it. That being said, everyone likes gratification so getting into the Orca first will deliver the tangible results like easy storage etc. and then working up the mining links from there can happen.
But like I said, be sure you are willing to commit a remap to just those charisma skills, versus eating a few more days on the training.
EDIT: The posters above do make a good point. Include in your training somewhere the ability to put on a Damage Control, and at the least rudimentary shield and drone skills. Even just Invul field 1 and 4 drones. Soon afterward you'll want to get the skills for tractor beams and such. This is why I stress not using a remap for charisma. you may find you really want a different skill path and having the remap for that available is pretty nice.

Im totally confused now i'm not sure if i should head straight for the orca or stick to my plan of remapping for charisma. I've tried to map it out on evemon but i cant figure it out. Anyone able to help me out give me a few numbers? ------------------------------

I remapped to charisma a few months ago, my next remap is in january, but it was worth it for me at least. http://eveboard.com/pilot/Brakus_Vendi

I had a lightbulb moment! Simply dont remap and train the orca skills then remap get all charisma skills out of the way then use the second remap for a more balanced plan thus reducing overall time and still getting in the orca quite fast. I now will be flying an orca in 45 days after i finish the learning skills ------------------------------
