Pretty much this. I popped a kid mining in a belt a while back, ended up giving him enough to buy a couple Ospreys lol.

This.
Great story - thanks for the read.
As others have commented you blowing him up then giving him isk to replace his ship would have been a good lesson plus a test of character. If he starts raging after losing his ship then you find out something that effects wether you want to be nice. Eve is a nasty game and it is good to get an honest read on someones character early.
Some of the best people I've met in Eve I met down the barrel of a gun. Just because you shoot someone doesn't mean you can't be friends - I think this is one of the biggest truths in Eve.
As for the "it is not piracy without tears" crowd wow you really are tough . Piracy has been about making a living off others loot plus ransoms for me.

Edited by: Mercie Orion on 24/08/2010 12:08:55 Not to derail your thread or steal your thunder, because I do applaud you for letting the poor sap live, I just recently experienced a very similar situation. Can flipping in a .5 system I ran into a Coercer (Destroyer class vessel) who was ratting. I assumed noob if he was ratting in a .5 but I decided to mess with him anyway. I raced over to his freshly blown up wreck, and took whatever it had in it, wasn't much some 20k lazer beam or something, and seconds later he went blinky. I'm in a Worm, a faction frig, with a full T2 shield tanked fit, a full wave of Tech 2 drones, and a faction AB for leet speed, so I orbit him at 5km, drones chew him to shreds while I dodge his bullets, and pop his ship.
After the fact, I looted his wreck, and realized there wasn't a single piece of tech II in the entire killmail. SO I convo'd the guy, he politely accepted, telling me good fight and asked what I was flying, I commend him for not being all emo about the fight, tell him that I admire his not being afraid to shoot, and drop him like 5 mil.
Moral of the story, not saying what you did was wrong, but if it happens again, and you can spare the isk, you NEED to pop the man, a caracal isn't going to grant you a ransom worth even looking at, so if he does accept convo from you, and you find out he's a noob, tell him that eve is a cruel and punishing place, and that he needs to pay close attention to where and what he is fighting, and watch his Dscan, give him some advice, but ALWAYS blow him up! It not only gets you the killmail, but it will sink in his brain. Be polite, there is no reason you can't be polite and still blow his ship to bits. He will have to go through the trouble of refitting his ship but you at least didn't leave him with nothing. In fact by blowing him up and donating some isk to him, you help him twice, he learns a valuable lesson and experience, plus he didn't lose any total isk value because you replaced it.

Edited by: Ashira Twilight on 24/08/2010 12:59:01 Makes me miss my days of roaming low sec in a punisher, pewpewing caracals in belts...
Your first pvp experience sounds a lot like mine...
"give me 2mil and you are free to go"
"but I don't have that much, I'm kinda broke after buying this new cruiser...."
"....how much ya got?"
I let him go for peanuts. I ransomed everything...except barges for some reason. I couldn't NOT kill them, I guess my subconscious figured I was doing the guy a favor.
edit
And win or lose, it was always fun having convos with the guy afterwards discussing what the other did wrong/right.

ah ye goode olde days :) You remind me of myself, except with less isk, skills, ships and experience :P I always shoot first and talk later, but if theyre a noob Ill often replace their ship/give them isk/find a way to stop them from ragequitting the game. And tbh those noobs do eventually grow up, I always ask em to remember me, cause someday they might be able to help me out. (Ive gotten some good deals on ships/gear and actually met some great future corp mates this way.)
What you're doing is the best way to learn to pvp. I'm even more impressed that you didnt rage and go back to hisec after losing your merlin; most hisec dwellers would do that. Props to you for sticking with it and having fun :)

Killing for no reason other than ****s and giggles is the best reason to kill.

This is the kind of thing I would do if I had the cash. I purposely avoid conflict with other players. Even when players war dec me I go out of my way to be non-violent. Only when I have no other option do I fight and if possible I leave and spare the pilot should they allow me to by un scramming me.
IT is not a play style for everybody but it fits my needs, I would like to think that some day when I got surrounded by some pirates they would be considerate enough to not engage me unless I specifically got in their way.

Not all of us have the heart to kill mercilessly. I cant suicide gank or grief either, its just too unkind.
However, if you enjoyed killing, get your ass in a null corp, plenty of consensual pvp to be had. All the fun, none of the regrets.

I would have tossed him some ISK but he was pretty uncommunicative. I might still cover his repairs though.

I really give respect to the OP for this.
Just today I was ratting in my belt for cash and my corp member Probed someone down in a mission.
Me and another corp member warped to their spot and wrecked his ship.
Afterward he popped, I locked on his capsule and was about to pod him until I looked at his Employment History.
I love taking security hits and I love being Wanted but he was only 2 weeks old. Guess I just felt like showing a little mercy in that moment even if he was new with no expensive implants.
